Prompt:
There was a night that sat somewhere within her memory
It belonged to a time that existed before she knew the name North. Names were not something that existed in that distant world that she no longer belonged to. She was nothing other than a movement of light, an illusion, a dappling of moonlight. That night the men took her mother away, the night she learned to run faster than before, away and away and away.
She fled at the sight of humans after that.
They were not something to be trusted, she learned that through the fear in her mother's eyes. She had only seen that once before when the rivers flooded and they had been separated for a day and a night. She learned to be on her own quickly. Man was the flood that stood as a wall between both mother and child. In her coming years as a vagabond she decided that a flood really was the perfect parallel to man. They came swiftly, damaged, and left just as soon. The plains she called her home began to close in in passing time, as homes and farms approached it's edges. She joined a herd of simple horses, that knew the same fear as her, and knew how to read it in passing birds and metal objects. She learned much from them, cunning and speed. The world no longer fought back and she was the land's master. She became a protector to the herd and fended off the larger animals that threatened their existence, her horn a powerful weapon. She was no longer a movement of light, nor illusion; she was a rumor. Rumors that flow by animals' tongues rarely stay where they are. Rumor of a dangerous horse reached the humans through the wounds of predators. She was no longer a secret, she was known. The farmers were the ones that found the herd. Soon after men were sent in to round up the horses. The horned beast would not go easily. She protected them as well as she could. They left with only half their goal. They would come later that night to finish the job.
With a name North now belonged to a world made by man.
She had much adjusting to do. The people were kind and gentle, careful and kind. Mistrust became her new weapon, she didn't know how to exist with these new creatures. She would rear and stomp on any near by feet, though she never wielded her horn against them. In time with much patience she will come to know the love of humans with acceptance. She will eat from their hands and let them ride her in parades. But for now there are smaller steps to take. For now one human sits on her back for the first time, and for the first time she does not care.
