Name: Avaluna "Anna"
Pronouns: she/her
Favorite pastime:
Avaluna grew up in the home of (somewhat nutty) space enthusiasts, who made their passion clear in every aspect of their lives. Her mother was an exceptional mathematician and dedicated her knowledge and resources to helping her country's leading space program, her father a researcher at a nearby observatory center and was more hands-on with data collection and archiving methods. Avaluna didn't have any siblings in her adopted family, but it never really bothered her. She connected with the older folks from her parents' jobs, and the house was never too quiet with guests and family friends always around.
Living in such an environment was something Avaluna really appreciated. She learned to value knowledge, and in her early years she was an avid bookworm. She enjoyed reading through different forms of documentation and non-fiction, but a part of her started to grow more fond of sci-fi literature. She felt that some stories explored real possibilities, and maybe her own parents would have some kind of unexpected breakthrough.... leading the way for starships, contact with aliens, insane technology.... things that could change the world. Of course, it's science-
fiction, but she liked to dream big regardless.
As far as her own life goes... Avaluna isn't quite sure what she wants to do, despite her similarities to her adoptive parents, her interest in books and passion for science. None of the jobs she could name really fit her idea for a perfect lifestyle... but she has a treasured pastime.
On Fridays after her school day, she goes to a material shop to buy blocks of wood. Small ones, around 5x5x5 inches, and brings them to her work desk at home to carve. It took some time to find the right methods to work with them, but at this point - she's a master of her craft. She references pictures from the observatory collection, and makes 3-dimensional replications of space formations.
At first glance, her carvings appear sort of meaningless. To be fair, it's difficult to capture the essence of a space formation in a solid block of wood... but as her carving became more intricate, her artistic flair combined with her attention to the details of the formations let her innate talent shine and brought out a uniqueness to her crafts.
It's a fun pastime, and she feels that it connects to her parents' lives in a few ways and brings her closer to them. One day she'll experiment with color to take her crafts to another level, but that's a step ahead and another story to be told.
