Cash was one of the older horses that had been involved in the crash, he kept a level head but knew he had to get out of the trailer that he and his small group were trapped in, as it was dangerously close to slipping into a more rapid part of the river, the door stuck half-open.
He knew that a blizzard and water inside of a metal box wasn't a great combination, so he did what he could to squeeze through and get everyone out, though he hurt his leg in the process-- A Joint that he had been having issues with that was the source of lengthy discussions about whether or not it was time for him to retire from being a show horse permanently.
He huffed at the aching pain in the bones surrounding his knee, but he carried on with a limp, leading the other horses to the cave.
When he got inside, he laid down on the ground for a bit, the trek having taken a lot out of him, it was certainly hard on his body and the coldness didn't help, and now he was sure that he had injured his leg even more.
He heard a group of hooves approaching, and when he stood up, he felt that awful pain again, it almost caused him to trip over his own feet and fall, something he knew he couldn't afford.
When the group finally found him and led him back, it was clear to the riders that they would have to slow down to bring Cash with them, and he started to question whether or not he should have stayed behind so the younger horses could get to the barn sooner, he'd find a way back by himself, but he shook the thought from his head-- He couldn't find his way back in the dark, especially not in all of that snow.
He huffed and trudged through.
It didn't take long for an emergency vet that was on standby to give Cash a look-over, assessing his bad limp.
He was patient with the young man, even when his knee seemed to creak at any movement, and he braced himself for the bad news when he received a prompt scan of the limb.
Turns out, though, all of his worrying was for nothing, he had simply pulled a muscle that was still healing from strain not too long ago and that he could keep his career as a reigning horse, he just needed to be more gentle on himself and take care with his aging bones.
If he could chuckle, he would have been chuckling to himself, it turns out maybe he's not as old on the outside as he thinks he is, maybe he's just as young as he is at heart.
