Competition: She had been wandering for hours, unsure of where she was, unsure of anything-- The forest was so dark, darker than anything she had experienced before.
She couldn't smell her friends, her family, her handlers, the ranch, anything. She couldn't see anything either.
She was fumbling around in pitch blackness, having fallen time and time again over branches and stumps underfoot, her legs were surely bruised by now.
She whinnied in fear and uncertainty, the sound echoing through the false night surrounding her, she was silently begging for a rescuer, someone to pluck her from the inky darkness and take her someplace warm, someplace familiar.
She heard something snap behind her, or at least, she thought it was behind her, she couldn't see.
The blackbirds cawing overhead and the constant thudding of her own heart made it hard for her to pinpoint the source of any sound, not to mention the horrible, hollow echoes that resounded through the sky.
It seemed like every noise was amplified and screamed back at her by tall, taunting trees, mocking her for getting so lost in the thicket.
She turned the best that she could, fumbling once more over something under her leg, darned tree stump.
She could tell now, at this point she had tripped so many times she would be able to recognize almost anything underfoot.
She reared, trying to make herself as intimidating as possible, but her heart racing made her whinnies sound panicked and afraid, giving away that she was less fight, more flight.
"Shh. It's okay. Follow me."
A Small voice called out to her, and she felt a hand on her flank, unafraid of her size or her intimidation tactics.
Something about this sound, this hand-- A Young girl? It was calming to her.
It reminded her of when she was a foal and the headmaster's daughter would come see her, caressing her choppy mane and velvety nose.
Her heart calmed itself down, though she was still uneasy.
A Soft, sweet lullaby led her through a pathway, no branches or logs beneath her feet.
The tiniest bit of light illuminated the figure in front of her, a young girl in a white dress, black hair tied back in a ribbon and curled perfectly, she had no shoes, but she didn't have a speck of dirt anywhere on her.
Her pale pink ribbon bounced as she walked, something for Mary to focus on other than the horrors of the blackness around her.
Wait-- She could see something ahead!
A Clearing!
She picked up her pace, looking at the basking glow of light that beamed down onto the forest floor, it was daylight after all!
She heard something call out from behind her, the cry of a hungered wolf-- Surely what had snapped that tree branch before.
She turned to look behind her, and then her gaze focused on the girl in front of her once more, only...
She wasn't there anymore.
She couldn't tell her 'thank you' for saving her, for guiding her to the clearing, for getting her out of the darkness.
Where could she have gone?
A Cold chill ran up Mary's back at the thought of a spirit child leading her to safety, but maybe the girl was lost like she was?
She had so many questions, but they were interrupted.
"Hey, y'all! I Think I found one!" a voice cried out, a rider and Euphorian approached and Mary knew that she had been saved.
Thank you, she thought, strange child-- I hope that wherever you are, you're safe.
(593 words, also, for clarification! The little girl was a spirit of the woods, taking that form as it sensed that she was most comfortable around children.)
