Halloween was one of the only holidays that seemed to fit.
The requirements, that is- crisp night air, the sweet smell of decaying leaves, carved pumpkins placed on the steps leading to the front porches of the nicer houses in town. The nights seemed to drag on forever, and the wind chill was just a bit unbearable; all of these things checked off a small list of somewhat mandatory happenings that must be underway for Madison to come to town. It seemed like she only came to stay with her grandmother for the month of October during Binx's younger years, and she awaited her arrival with excitement each time the fall season hit the village.
She was a sweet girl for sure; long blonde hair and the bluest eyes you could have ever seen. She always had a few teeth missing when she gave Bix her signature smiles, her two front ones she said had fallen out while she was playing with her dolls, and the tooth fairy would come get them soon. Binx never reminded her that she has said that last year and the year before- never questioned why they hadn't grown in just yet. She always assumed they would in time. She always wore a baby blue checkered pleated dress when she would visit town, and would always tell Binx she was staying in the same exact house as Mrs. Milo down the way. Binx never knew Mrs. Milo had grandchildren.
Each Halloween with Madison brought Binx so much cheer, so much that even her mother had begun to notice the skip in her daughter's step and how she would bounce with excitement when October would roll around. She was very excited to hear about Madison when she first started coming to town, but as the years dragged on, it was as if her mother's brows would become more and more furrowed, as if she was concerned. Binx never thought anything of it however- there was too much to be happy about for her to find anything to be upset about! The night of, Binx would meet Madison outside the house- Binx's mother would beg her to take her older sister along with them; a new plea that had been more common in these recent years. She would only shrug as the three would then make thier yearly rounds around the village, Madison always waiting for Binx at the end of each walkway. Madison never liked candy.
It wasn't until Binx was old enough to stop trick-or-treating that the police had come by to the house. Her mother had warily let them in and as Binx fearfully peaked around the corner she saw her mother's eyes widen in shock. One of the men had caught Binx peeking, encouraging her to make herself known, handing her a picture of a missing child with beautiful blue eyes and a semi-toothless smile. They said she had been missing for over 15 years, longer than Binx had ever lived at the time; she couldn't understand.
Halloween. Madison never visited after the cops came, but sometimes out of the corner of Binx's eye she catches a glimpse of a baby blue dress, or the flicker of blonde hair right outside her periphery. She would then sigh, willing the whirling thoughts from her mind and moving on with her life. However, Binx never fails to feel the small spike of adrenaline when Halloween comes along, a secret and deep longing for once was threatening to break through.
