Lion name: Flint Before the Flame "Flint"
Lion gender: male
Pride: Lions of the WavesPride status: Prompt: When Flint was only a few days old, hunters ravaged his pride. The lions were killed, captured, or scattered, and in the confusion Flint was left behind. His tiny mewling cries drew the attention of other local predators. A pack of wolves from the nearby forest found the cub. One of the females took pity on the little thing, and since she had recently birthed pups, decided to raise him along with them.
So, Flint grew up as a wolf. He always knew he was different, he grew much larger than his littermates and his voice never quite howled as cleanly as they could, but he was loved. The pack taught him about the importance of family, and how to hunt, and about the deities of the wolves.
"Do you see that constellation, Flint?"
"Yes mum."
"That is the Star Wolf. He watches over us from the spirit realm."
"Even me? I'm not a wolf."
"Even you, because you are my son."
Flint loved his adopted family. But he couldn't help feeling like something was missing in his life. He grew too big to play with his siblings, and no longer fit in the wolf dens. He felt clumsy. He couldn't run down a deer as easily as his pack mates. He decided that it was time for him to go out and find a home among creatures like himself, to learn how to be a lion.
"How will you know where to go?" One of his brothers asked.
"I will follow the Star Wolf. Mum always said the Star Wolf watches out for me too, even though I am a lion. Maybe it can lead me to where I belong."
The pack was sad to see him go, but they understood his need to understand himself and fit in. His mother gave him a necklace, a string of deer hide with a carved pendant made of bone. "So you will always remember the Star Wolf, and the family you have here."
Flint set off, the pendant bouncing against his heart as he ran. It was a beautiful night, with clear skies that seemed to make the stars sparkle brighter. Flint looked up to the Star Wolf, and where its nose pointed. When he looked down, he saw several translucent wolves running around him. They raised their muzzles and howled together, then moved faster, ahead of Flint, leading him onward. At the head of the pack was one wolf who glowed more brightly than the others, and had sparkling stars in its fur.
Days and weeks passed. Flint slept during the day, and followed the Star Wolf and his messengers at night.
They led him to a shore, and out onto a jetty. There, they howled again, before racing off across the waves and disappearing.
So then, this must be home.
