Baltic Husky Show Name: BBWD Winter Soldier
Baltic Husky Call Name: Bucky

What was the first trick he learned: Tracking a scent!
Extra: Bucky had been taken into the local animal shelter many months ago. Many adopters were passing him up, whether it was because his coat was too fluffy and they feared white tumbleweeds would be bouncing around their homes, or a lack on interest in playtime from the pup. The shelter staff began to worry about Bucky, as his welfare began to decline as he spent more and more time stuck in a kennel, with no interest to play or engage in training. They felt as though they were running out of options with him, that is, until a newer volunteer made a suggestion. Some dogs simply just aren't motivated to fetch a ball or tug a rope. Some dogs want to work and use their nose. Scent detection can be extremely enriching for some dogs, and would be worth a try for any dog that isn't very keen on other forms of play or enrichment.

The shelter staff blocked off a bit of time on a slower weekday in order to spend some one on one time with Bucky. The started by placing the scent, which was just a baggie of kitchen spices for now, right in front of him. When he went to sniff it, they rewarded him. The scent had definitely caught Bucky's interest, and he appeared highly motivated to keep going. It wasn't long before the staff members were able to move the scent further away from him, and then eventually, hiding the scent behind something within his line of sight. They hadn't seen Bucky this happy since he had arrived at the shelter! And they were so proud of how quickly he was able to pick up a scent and follow it to where it was hidden! The news of a dog in need of a home that seemed highly motivated for scent tracking traveled the Baltic Buddies Working Dog Center, and the center agreed that he sounded like the perfect fit for their program. In no time, they would be able to polish off his training so that he would be able to use his skills to find missing people or animals.

What was the first trick he learned: Roll over!
Extra: Jackson was never very good at learning new tricks. People always tried to tempt him with treats and tug ropes, but for some reason it didn't click with him easily. People tended to get frustrated with him and give up but he wanted to do his very very best to finally get something right. However, one day he was laying in the sunny sprig breeze. The rays of the sun began to move and he wanted to lay in the warmth of them so badly that he slowly moved...over...over...over... until he completely flipped on his other side! Soon the sounds of cheering alerted him and he was met with many happy pats and yummy snacks. From then on, he was always happy to do it for his owner.

The first thing the white dog when he moved in was how to use the dog door to get in and out of the house. To teach him this, the humans started by pinning it open and throwing treats out of it. Form there it went to throwing toys and stuff. Soon he was following the other dogs in and out.
What was the first trick he learned:
Extra: Drift is slow due to lack of Oxygen as a puppy

What was the first trick he learned: The first trick - learned was how to beg!
Extra: In all honesty, we weren't actually trying to teach him this. Whenever we would get his favourite treats out he was sit on his hind legs with his front paws up in the air. After seeing him do this on his own a few times, we decided to teach him to associate this action with the command 'beg'. Now he does it on command!

Kennel Name / Link: Wolf's Peak (empty, wip)
Baltic Husky Show Name: Hell on Ice
Baltic Husky Call Name: Hero

What was the first trick he learned: Spin
Extra:
Hero is a highly energetic boy and has a hard time containing that energy when he gets excited. When he first came to Wolf's Peak, he could occasionally do a steady sit, and without fail always flailed a paw at you in a crude attempt to shake. Even with heavy work with our trainers, Hero's energy got the better of him and he would run and jump and become hard to keep still.
After nearly 3 months of exhaustive efforts, one of our trainers had a break through. After a long session of failed attempts at "sit" and "stay" Hero began to spin excitedly. With a little extra rewarding, his trainer was able to get him to spin on command, and immediately after, maintain a perfect sit for longer than he had ever been able to prior to that. From that day onward, anyone who was attempting to work with him would give him the spin command and he would bound in circles over and over until he leveled out his energy, and settled enough to listen and learn new commands.

In the end, spin was the most helpful trick for Hero to learn, and was a great gateway trick to help him become one of the best dogs in our kennels!

What was the first trick he learned: Play dead
Extra:
Snowflake is a lazy dog to begin with. He’s always lazing around so he quickly learned that if he laid down and not move, he would receive a treat. At a bit more of a dramatic flare and he gets extra treats and rubs.

What was the first trick he learned: Sit!
Extra: Makana's favorite trick is sit. Makana always associated it with treats. Ears perked, nose twitching, she'd prompty place her rump on the ground, tail wagging in excitement as she gazed at her owner's hand for a sign, a smell- She was truly devastated when the treats stopped. But now she's rewarded in something quite better- scritches on the head. Makana loves scritches on her head.
