Task One

Postby Kenjaku » Thu Jun 11, 2020 8:19 am

Task One
ADULT & YEARLING
-Write or draw about your first encounter with your Drover. This
may be the day you got them home, when you went to pick them
up at the holding facility, or any other scenario where you first
meet your Drover.
*remember that the Drover is no pre-picked and you will only find
out what they look like once you meet them.
*written task must be 100+ words at the absolute minimum

Excitement caught in the young person's chest. They could hardly feel their face, they'd been excited at the prospect of all of this coming true for a while now. Eliane Beatrys - known by loved ones as Ellie - had been fighting a lifelong fear of horses. Somehow, she had married a horse crazy German who had slowly become more and more cowboy over the years. It had taken several baby and large steps to get to the point to where she could interact with his horse, Fortino. After working with him for years, her dear husband John had decided it was time to take the leap. It was time to get Ellie her own horse. Fortino had been a hard lesson - independent, strong willed, and unfortunately a biter. He had put Ellie through her paces, so the couple knew if she could handle him, she could handle a Drover.

The trip to Australia to meet this prospective horse had been amazing. She'd rarely been out of her home state of Louisiana and then, where she'd come to rest at her husband's side, North Carolina. The trip and the time spent seeing the sights was nothing compared to this. Compared to this very moment: meeting her new horse. Ellie hadn't been picky in her submission; asking simply for a yearling filly that would hopefully help keep Fortino in line and help him tend to their cattle. Her hands were trembling in excitement as she followed instructions to where the Drover would be.

The young filly was as full of fire as Fortino was, causing a ruckus and trotting about the pen she'd been brought to. She was halter broken but not much else; though Ellie had expected as much. She adjusted her sun hat and let herself into the ring; immediately catching the eyes of the filly. The first test of Ellie's character was immediate: the filly charged at her, skidding to a stop just before hitting her. Ellie didn't flinch, used to Fortino's tests of his own, and the young beast looked her eye to eye for a short moment. There was fire and flame and something soft within those warm, brown eyes. She knew not to push her luck; didn't offer a hand or anything, just let the horse see her and be seen.

The filly gave a thoughtful flick of her tail, breathing warm from her nose onto Ellie's freckled face. "Hi, sweet girl," Ellie whispered, smiling.

This was going to be a process for them both.

Task Two
ADULT & YEARLING
-Write or draw about your first training session with your Drover.
This may include as much progress as you would like; the first
pat, the first haltering, the first time being brushed etc. The pr-
ogress of your Drover is completely up to you.
*written task must be 150+ words at the minimum

Ellie had been clear about one thing from her first meeting: she was determined to win this filly over, and would not bring her back to the states until both felt comfortable. Her husband had been understanding, thankfully, and didn't mind her staying in Australia until she was sure.

The first few days were repeats of the first day: the spitfire of a filly testing Ellie to see if she'd cower. She'd even drawn blood in a few ill-placed bites, but the human persisted. It was confusing and even a degree of infuriating - biting and pitching a fit had run everyone else off. Why did this human keep coming back? Day five marked a breakthrough for Ellie and the girl she'd started to call Sunny. She came this time bearing treats, and Sunny wasn't about to turn her little soft nose up at treats.

"I baked these myself," Ellie hummed, letting the filly nibble the treats out of her open palm. "Just for you, Sunny. They've got apple and oat," she cooed, voice soft and gentle despite the hell the beast had been putting her through. The young Drover seemed to let her guard down for the first time; tail swaying gently as she indulged. Her ears stood relaxed, body language not as rigid as it usually was. Ellie took the chance she'd been waiting for: she reached out confidently but slow, rubbing Sunny's neck. The filly paused in her nibbling, eyes turning up to Ellie's. Their eyes met again for a moment, before Sunny accepted the affection and went back to nibbling. It was such a small thing, but everything to Ellie. She couldn't help but babble about it to her husband that night on video call, and cry a little bit, too. Her baby girl had accepted her, even if it was just a tiny bit.

Things managed to get easier from that day on. Petting became brushing, and Sunny seemed to anticipate Ellie's visits. She even ran up to the fencing to greet her, nickering and wiggling as only a leggy little filly could. Soon, the two girls were inseparable. That meant it was time for the final step: bringing her home.
