It was dark, humid but much cooler than during the day. And he was stuck in that blasted stall again! His grain had been gone for what felt like hours ago, and now the moon was rising and he without the chance to gallop about the paddock in the cool night! Pawing at the ground, not bothering to remember the last time he had dug a gouge into the flooring and been forced to listen to Sam complaining all afternoon, Howl ceases all movement at the creaking of a door.
“Stop it, Howl! Serris will catch me if you don’t be quiet!” A voice whispered from the feed room, and he snorted loudly before rumbling in his belly. “What?” A head peeked over his stall door, and he bobbed his head rapidly as he began pawing again. His hoof hit the door, startling the young boy, but he returned with a stool and grimaced as soon as they were both at eye level. “If I let you out, you gotta be quiet! I can teach you how to open the pasture door, okay?” Little Alan promised, soon sneaking into the stallions stall without fear.
It took the most of two hours, but soon enough Alan snickered as he pushed the L-latch back into place on the pasture-side door. Howl snorted, but moved his head and neck over, lipping at the latch before it came loose. “Now go outside and hush!” Alan scolded, though his wide smile as Howl trotted out the open door betrayed how he really felt about the obnoxiously active stallion.
