Would anyone guess it, would anyone know,
The day that I find most important to me?
I suppose they wouldn’t, as it would not show,
But the day that I love is the I was freed!

Now, you wouldn’t guess it, especially young
But some humans aren’t quite as kind to little hatchlings
They promised me food, they promised me fun,
But they took me, they bound me with chains on my wings!

I squirmed and I fought, but I lack a single leg
It was easy for them to cart me around.
To them, I might well been easy as an egg!
At least they thought so, until my cries did sound!

I was lucky, so lucky that new moon night,
For the big Quetzalcoatl that appeared to save my life,
His name was Bex— he and the men did fight!
He may lack claws, but his teeth, they were far sharper than a knife!

He set me free, and carried me off
As I nuzzled into his silk-soft fur
He said, “Little one, your name shall be Toph,
And I? Well, I’ll be your new brother.”

“Mother!” I called, and giggled as he sighs,
For I could hear the rumble of his laugh below me
He’ll always be a hero, at least in my eyes!
Because Bex, my brother, he set me free!

The grounds quaked, it felt like the earth was going to shatter when the almighty dragon landed amidst the clan's borders. It was the coming of age: dragon lords dispersed around the land to observe those who are worthy of the clans and scrutinize those that are not. Dragons of all ages gathered at the great hall to hear the task and Kez did his best to slink through the crowd until he was nearly at the front. One of the Quetzalcoatl lords visited Kezentali's clan in their spectacular, gold feathered resplendence.

"Young hatchlings, today is the day you prove your mettle. This day you will move forward in your life and proclaim yourself as part of the clan," The elder dragon's voice boomed. "Find your courage and bring a sacrifice of strength five sunsets from today."

The young dragons in the area were told of this day for many seasons. Many took off to begin planning their showcases. Kez was among the many that already had their eyes on a target: a lion that was near their territory. It often stole kills from them and it would be an excellent show of strength.

On the rise of the next sun, Kez flew out early to track down the lion. There were other early morning risers, but he paid them no mind as he flew to the forests. When Kez finally tracked them down, the lion was also hunting for prey, a springy horned bok. The dragon swooped in when the bok escaped and started the barrage of attacks. The lion's jaws and claws left gouges on Kez's body and it was a losing battle. In a flurry of feathers, a much larger dragon swooped in and finished the lion with sharp talons. The other dragon gave one fierce glare and Kez slithers off to recover from his wounds.

IIn the underbrush, Kez started tending to his wounds, but he noticed there was an ocelot with patches of red that were similar to Kez's own. The ocelot regarded him warily and Kez was careful to not move too fast. They were both too weary to fight. Kez reluctantly picked himself up to gather ingredients for a salve. The finished product was a light green paste and he quickly imbued it with magic to help with healing. When he returned to his previous hiding spot, he made sure to get the ocelot's attention and applied the salve slowly to his wounds first.

"Here, I can help you too if you want it?" The dragon tried to be as non-threatening as possible when he offered the levitating salve. The ocelot seemed to understand his sentiments and allowed him to apply the scratches. It took little time for it to take effect and the ocelot seemed to have regained a lot of energy. Kez also was able to hunt down a rodent and dropped it at the feline's paws. You know what they say, a way to a creature's heart is through their stomach. He left the ocelot to their own devices while he flew back for a much-needed rest.

It turns out that he did not need to seek out another cat since the ocelot decided to seek him out. The feline dropped a bird in front of Kez. He is not one to be one-upped and he dropped a larger hare in front of the feline. They looked at the hare as if it personally offended them, but eventually ate it anyways. This was the start of a quick friendship.

On the day of the ceremony, some dragons had prizes of the hunt while others showed off their plumage displays in traditional dances. The wyrmling before him, did both; parading the skin of a lion while fanning out their bright orange feathers in a circular dance. The gold feathers of the elder dragon ruffled in praise as the young dragon presented their sacrifice. And soon it was his turn.

Kez slithered slowly towards the center, wings tucked in. His grey feathers were not very noteworthy. Dragons drummed out the beat and Kez started off with the rustling of his wings and flew in tight circles. With a fierce roar, the ocelot jumped from above to join the performance. They ended with a flourish. It was not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but Kez was proud of the work they did in a short time. It was time for the judgement.

"An unconventional choice," the elder dragon spoke in measured tones. "Yet, what an interesting one. The patience and ability to befriend another predator has granted you worthiness. It is a show of unique strength." Relief flooded Kez's body and he brushed the feline's head with his wings. They gave a bow towards the elder and towards the crowd, then left to join the audience. The presentation continued throughout the night and the next day but Kez was awed by the different talents that were brought forth.

Afterwards, the gold dragon did not stay for long and left the clan with one grand beat of both wings. The ground at Kez and the ocelot's feet quaked at the departure.
