Flowers:Amora bounded out of her den excitedly. Today was festival day. The pride had spent the last week preparing, making special dishes, setting up games, and decorating the whole place with flowers.
If there was any lion you especially cared for or loved this was the day to let them know.
Amora was participating for the second time and she was just sure she'd be getting a proclamation of love and a flower garland which symbolized a couple's newfound love and commitment to one another.
All the young lions who were of age would be eager to finally give away the garlands they had been working on so hard the day before. Amora was rather pleased with hers, the combination of lilac, pink, and white flowers making a nice pastel rainbow.
"It'll be time soon."
Amora looked up at her sister's voice and smiled. "I can't wait!" Her sister smiled but a familiar sadness shadowed her gaze and Amora felt a pick of guilt. Her sister had lost her mate only a year ago and was still grieving the loss deeply. This holiday would be hard for her and Amora felt almost bad for being so cheerful about it.
As if reading her thoughts her sister said, "I want you to go out there and enjoy yourself. Don't let me spoil it."
"I think it might be a wonderful day." Amora smiled, her thoughts turning to Jachin, her best friend whom she had a feeling might be the one to give her a garland. Everything about the looks they had shared, the look Amora saw in his eyes...it had to be love. And though she had tried not to get her hopes up, she knew she'd be very pleased to have him give her his garland. They'd been friends so long, and she just knew they were perfect for each other. Her first festival he hadn't approached her, but they had been young and she was willing to wait. She thought now he might finally be ready to tell her how he felt, and she knew she was ready to hear it.
"Just don't worry too much on finding someone. Take your time and enjoy the food and games. There is always time to find the right one."
"Okay." Amora nodded, really only half listening. She knew her sister's warning was wise, but she'd already nearly had a declaration, she was sure it would all be made official today. What could go wrong?
Feeling confidant Amora headed off to join the other lions for the start of the festival. As usual the day started with some specialty foods and games, all of which Amora enjoyed immensely. Jachin joined her for several of the games and every smile or warm look he sent her way made her heart flutter.
Before long it was time for the lions to begin to pair off and find their love interest. Amora sought out Jachin, sure he'd be glad to see her. But when she found him she was just in time to see him give his garland to another lion.
Amora had thought she'd been careful with her feelings, but the heart crushing pain she felt at the sight of her best friend giving his garland to someone else was worse than anything she could remember feeling before. She hurried away before he saw her, taking shelter under a tree.
In an attempt to help the pain she felt Amora tried to remind herself it wasn't the end of the world, there were other lions out there, perhaps she had been mistaken in thinking Jachin was the one.
But the day went on and no one approached her. Lions paired off and she was left alone under the tree, the garland she had made beginning to wilt. Hurt by her crushed hopes and the fact that she seemed to have been forgotten Amora finally gave into her pain and began to cry softly to herself, curling up and dropping her garland to the ground.
She couldn't have said how long she laid there like that before her sister found her, hugging her gently as she cried. At the hug Amora only cried more, and when she could finally manage it Amora looked up at her older sister and said shakily, "He didn't want me. No one did."
"Hush, hush," her sister said soothingly. "It's only your first year. There are plenty of lions out there you know, it isn't the end of the world."
"It hurts," her sister said quietly, feeling pathetic in a way but feeling unable to gather herself. "What's wrong with me? Why does no one want me?"
"It's only your second festival Amora, and there is nothing wrong with you. It just takes some lions longer than other to find love."
"All of my friends have," Amora said softly. "I'm the only one who hasn't. I can't help wondering...if something is wrong with me."
"That's nonsense." Her sister was quiet a moment then said, "Come with me."
Amora hesitated but then stood and reluctantly followed her sister over to the games and crafts area. Once they got there her sister told her to wait a moment and disappeared inside a den. only a moment later she came back out of the den, carrying the most beautiful garland Amora had ever seen. The flowers were lovely shades of pink, some tinted with pink or blue and made her think of a sunset.
Her sister carefully draped the garland over Amora's neck. "You're a wonderful, smart, beautiful lioness Amora. You're the best sister and friend I could ever ask for and I love you more than anything. I know it isn't what you wanted exactly, but I want you to wear this, and remember how much you're loved by me and our family."
Amora had to stifle a sniffle. "I love you too sis. You're the best." Impulsively she hugged her sister then remembering something said, "Wait here." She ran back to the tree and retrieved her forgotten, half wilted garland.
"It isn't as nice as yours," she said as she put it over her sister's head. "But I love you too and I don't know what I'd do without you."
Her sister smiled and the two shared another hug, each forgetting their griefs in that moment as their love for each other helped mend their broken hearts.
