first fearful experience: When there was a fire at his first home, when he was a pup...He doesn’t remember if it was a den, or what, but he remembers the orange blaze, and the smell of smoke. A couple trees burned, which scared him because they looked so big and strong to him. That was his first fearful experience.

first fearful experience: Aurora-Belle has always been a stoic and serious pup, making her a fantastic herd guardian. Her first fearful experience would be from a time when she had just begun her herding duties full time. While attempting to lead her heard past a river, one of the animal spooked and kicked out at her. While she narrowly missed a hoof to he face, her evasive maneuvers sent her tumbling into the river below. The current was strong and relentless as she tossed head over tail over and over in the frothy waters. None of her previous swimming had prepared her for the force with which she was being moved, and her attempts to fight the current were useless. Nothing she did stopped the waves from throwing her around like a rag doll. Just as she felt she couldn't go without air any longer, her handler grabbed her collar and pulled her to safety. She wouldn't go near water for weeks afterwards, but eventually overcame her fear and now enjoys swimming in calm waters on hot days

Koha's been on the plains for at least 2 years now. She's intelligent and has handled her training and duties very well, showing great promise and obedience all throughout. Koha has also been very brave in handling bigger beasts, even stepping up to the challenge to corral the wildebeest and rhinoceros. But about a month before she turned two, she had been making her rounds when a wild hound crossed her path and tried to pick off one of the mares expected to be bearing a foal. She did her best to be calm and scare the hound off, but he pressed on and eventually wounded the mare, sending Koha into a panic. Fortunately, she recovered her wits and made a move to assert herself, and the stallions of the herd came to her aid, braying and scaring the wildling off. The mare recovered, thankfully, and Koha has learned to be more aggressive in times of need.

Adelaide is an experienced trainer-- she knows that sometimes, a pup will not react in the way she expects them to. It happens. It's her job to make sure that experience won't scar them, won't result in unnecessary training if she can help it. There is no need to push a pup too hard and too fast just to work with them on the issue again later down the line.

The large, noisy gas-guzzling cars used by the park rangers were quite overwhelming for most pups. Adelaide titrated the intensity for all of them. The stench of gas and oil first, then seeing the large bulky open-air jeeps and humvees from afar. Hearing them, smelling them until the pup showed no concern. Then it was time to introduce them to one that was not running. Then, a parked car, engine on. With the rest of Adelaide's pack so the pup's confidence was bolstered by the presense of other relaxed dogs. All of these steps and more until the pup was happily sitting in the back, head out of the window, rolling down the bumpy roads of the reserve.

Helicopters, though... Marky got spooked when he heard his first one. The reserve doesn't use them often as they're expensive and impossible to land where you need them to if you're not in an open field. Adelaide hadn't known they had even called one in until it flew overhead, low and fast, motor deafening and the wind from its blades kicking up dust.

Marky bolted-- Adaleide let him. Restraining the frightened pup wouldn't have helped his fear. She let his leather lead slip out of her hand as the piebald hound booked it to back to the car far back on the road. He barked at the helicopter until it was out of sight, the hound hiding under her jeep. The rest of Adelaide's hounds had gotten excited by the noise-- jumping and spinning around her, ready to work.

She started to head back to the car, calm and casual. It was a good sign when Marky wiggled out, still barking with his tail no longer tucked but held at high alert. The pack just wanted to play so she released them. Marky ran down the road next, standing on his toes with his head tilted, looking the way the helicopter had gone. It took a playful tackle from one of his littermates to get Marky out of his moment of fright.

Adelaide makes a note to work with Marky as soon as she gets a chance. She'll likely have to drive to the nearest airfield to find some helicopters for him to explore. She can't have a dog afraid of helicopters.
