________________________________Eliza"Ellie"________________________________She loves all things magical and mysterious so Halloween is undoubtedly her favorite holiday! Ellie is quite passionate about making it absolutely perfect, so every year she crafts her own costume from scratch since originality is always more fun. She usually starts the project halfway through the summer and finishes it a week before Halloween. She takes her time on purpose as it takes patience and time to come up with an idea and execute it perfectly. This particular year, she went with a "night witch/wizard" look, complete with hand-sewn swirly & starry patterns and a bat-shaped clip for an additional accent.
She isn't a huge fan of horror extremes, in fact she actually prefers a nice spooky mystery. This is why her theme every year when it comes to decorating is usually either bright and festive or dark and mysterious. She tries not to make it appear intimidating, however, and she’ll always avoid anything that might genuinely frighten any extremely young children and ruin their fun. This particular year she decided to combine a little bit of both mysterious and bright. It was extremely fun and she enjoyed seeing everyone’s reactions to her Halloween plan.
What exactly was her plan, you may ask? Well, she’ll gladly tell you the story of one of her favorite moments..
______
A peacefully decorated house sat still and quiet on Halloween night. Despite the brightly lit orange lights that spiraled up a tree in the front yard, the porch was dark and undecorated save for a large plastic cauldron big enough for a young kalon to fit in. Ellie waited, curled up at the bottom of the cauldron. Her dark cape covered her, blending in perfectly in the dark and making the bottom of the cauldron look like an endless void of darkness.
There was laughing all around, and children’s choruses of “trick or treat!” repeated at the neighbor's doors. She waited, until the voices began to get closer and she could hear them running on the pavement towards her house.
“This place looks really cool! Let’s go here!”
“Hey, wait up, this house is decorated but I don’t see anyone..”
“We can knock on the door!”
“But the house is all dark..”
“Look, there’s a giant bucket out front! Bet the candy’s in there!”
The footsteps approached, and the sound of shuffling was heard and Ellie could tell a young kalon was peering into the cauldron.
“Never mind, it’s empty!” The boy yelled back to his friends.
Before he could turn around and leave, however, Ellie shifted the dark cape that concealed her presence and ever so slightly peeked out from beyond the abyss of fabric, revealing her eye.
“Whoa!” She could now see the unsuspecting kid was a young boy dressed in a vampire costume who jumped in surprise.
“What is it?” “What do you see?” His friends asked excitedly.
A beat. Then Ellie popped up from the cauldron with a grin and a loud “boo!”
The kids scrambled backwards with yelps, staring in shock. Though their fearful faces slowly turned into expressions of awe as the shock faded and they instead became impressed by her method of hiding.
“Wow, that was a really cool trick!” One of them exclaimed with amazement.
“Now treat?” Asked the youngest and smallest of the bunch, a kal in a little ghost costume.
Ellie grinned “Of course! One second~” She ducked back down to reach for the bowl of candy, a tinier cauldron full of lollipops and candy corn, and brought it back up to distribute three pieces to each of the costumed group.
She received a chorus of “thank you!”s and “happy Halloween!” before the kids turned and bounded back down the driveway.
“I like your costume!” The little vampire boy yelled behind him as they left, surprising her.
“Thank you!” She yelled back, giving the group of friends a little wave.
Then she ducked back down, pulling her cape back over her and ready to do it all over again.
(671 words. Other kalons are random NPCs)
