Intake Report: Crop Scarring On Sides | Whip Scarring On Right Knee | Soring Scars On Back Feet
"This sweet hearted queen gave the staff a bit of a scare upon arrival. The poor darling was in such pain standing that they flopped right over, nearly crushing several of the handlers. It took quite a few shots of sedation and pain medications to get them back up and moving so that the veterinary staff could really get a good look at what was wrong. The normal tell-tale signs of being a racer were there, shown in the trade mark v-shaped scars on the queen's flank left behind by illegal racing crops, but there was more to their story. Upon inspecting their back feet, the vet team came to the conclusion that the Skepluvi was likely used as a 'crowd starter'. Crowd starters were the flashy and docile Skepluvi that were paraded around a racing track in front of the crowds, usually sporting fancy gear or costumes, and made to do little tricks and clownish acts to get the crowd excited. Unfortunately for these Skepluvi, they had to suffer through a common method called soring to get those 'beautiful' trots and high steps that everyone loved watching so much. Soring in Skepluvi's is quite similar to soring done to horses; it's the cruel process of strapping foot covers to their feet, adhering the inside of it to their heel with chemicals that burns the skin, and hammering nails through the bottoms of the foot covers into their claws to keep it in place. The pain in their feet keeps them stepping around with high-knees and widely exaggerated gaits, which to the cheering crowd looked like they were walking on air and prancing about with elegance. The process had been made illegal decades ago, and thankfully was less often seen, but this Skepluvi was obviously not so fortunate. Though their attitude is very positive and they seem quite lovable, they do go wild whenever anyone attempts to touch their feet, assumably due to the trauma they've endured over the years. The staff believes that if the queen's new caretaker is able to properly gain their trust, then they will be able to handle their feet easier, allowing the veterinary staff to start working on proper physical therapy as well as designing some ankle braces that should help with the day-to-day pain. If their new handler can't gain the trust of this poor Skepluvi, their future looks very grim.. So it's all up to you now - will you help this darling?"
