Welcome to the Fallen Oaks Farm event!
It is here that an illegal Euphorian Thoroughbred breeding operation was shut down by local authorities. All of the mares, stallions, and of age foals are in need of homes. There will also be some mares that still have their foals that need to be taken care of. Euphorian lovers from all over have come together to get homes for all of the animals. They've brought giant trailers and are ready and waiting to bring home a bunch of new faces. But before adopting, they must visit the trailer parking site.

Short story:

River watched as their clever hands locked her in again. She didn't like being locked in the musty creaking barn. She would rather be outside in the wind and grass. Time and again she'd look out through the cracks int he walls at the grass outside, and feel the air brush over her withers; a taste of the breeze outside. This time, however, they left the sagging half door open on top, so she could look out. She was only a few years old, at this point.

Her curious mind saw the rusty bit of metal keeping the door shut. She leaned her head over and nudged it, feeling it move just a little. She knew that they moved it to keep them locked in, but she didn't quite understand the way it needed to move so the door would open. She started playing with it, and figured out she could lift the rusty metal with her lips. Clunk, back into place it went. She tried leaning against the door as she lifted it. Nothing.

She kept playing with it, and was vaguely keeping an eye on the grassy areas just out of her reach. River lifted it again, when a loud noise sounded. She jerked her head and looked up, ears flicking trying to pinpoint where the noise came from. When she went back to play with the metal piece, she noticed that ti was still sticking. She tried to push it down, but it wouldn't budge. She felt around with her muzzle and noticed that the knob part she had been playing with wasn't in the same spot. She grabbed it again and this time she pulled it to the side. She let go,and the piece fell back down. The door creaked open.

River nudged it with a leg, and it opened more. Her heart started pounding in excitement, and she felt more of the wind on her face. She burst from the rotting barn into the waiting field. She couldn't help but buck in excitement. The wind whipped around her, making her feel giddy. She nickered and the others poked their heads out to watch her run around and nibble the grass. Some of them started kicking their doors, wanting out too. The racket caused the man to come back out t see what had them riled up. She ran from him playfully, twisting and turning with her head held high. Eventually she let herself be caught and led back inside.

He closed the door again, and double checked that it was latched. Every day for the next week she would let herself out, sometimes more than once. Fed up, the man realized her escaping wasn't because he forget to latch the door shut. A new lock came in,a nd it took her a few weeks to figure out how to open that too. Several locks, complex latches, and horse proof gates later, he drilled a new lock in, but instead of being at easy reach for him, he put it as close to the floor as he could, with the enclosed parallel latch bar on top. Normally wit was reversed, and he grumbled about having to stoop low just to lock her in. She figured it out in a day.

Fed up, the man fenced in the entire property to keep her from attracting too much attention if she was found wandering the road. He planted hedges on the road side of the fence, to keep people from seeing the mare wandering around in a non pastured area. People asking questions was a dangerous thing for him, after all. He reinstalled most of the latches onto her door going down. Every day was a different latch. At least it would keep her busy, he thought. He didn't like it, but there was no point in wasting his money on latches that couldn't even keep her in.

Short story: Lily has always been a clever mare, from the time she was a filly. She was born in Fallen Oaks Farm to a malnourished mare and stallion. Her mother never produced enough milk to be able to feed her filly, but Lily had other ways of getting milk. She used to be able to snake milk from other mares, but once she started feeling bad for the other foals she was taking the milk supply from, she began getting it in more risky ways. Lily would watch their owner open the gate day after day to come in and feed the dam, until she eventually learned how the mechanism worked. After dark, she would silently trot over to the gate, stick her head through the bars, and flip the lock. She would make her way over to the neighboring barn. She was able to open the stalls of broodmares, and guilt trip them into allowing her to nurse off of them until she was full. Some of the mares would even cuddle with her over night to keep her warm. She would make her way back to her farm before her owner would go to feed the mares again. The other horses became suspicious when she came home with the scent of another mare and milk on her. She would simply tell them they were going crazy. When she was old enough she got her own stall, she could open it because she had experience opening the stalls of broodmares. She would sneak out of her stall to the feed roam and fill up on oats. She became an amazing jumper, and was eventually able to jump the fences of the farms. She never ran away though, because she couldn't leave her family. She loved them too much. There would be times she would sneak a bale of hay to her mother and siblings. She never taught any of the other horses how to escape because she knew they would be put down if they were caught. She would rather it be her than them. Lily eventually became skilled enough to the point where she could open the door to her owners house and sneak a few slices of bread and sugar while her owner was sleeping. He thought he was going crazy when he began to see muddy hoof prints on his kitchen floor, but his door would always be shut when he woke up. He didn't think any of his horse would have been skilled enough to do that. One day, Lily's owner witnessed her opening her own stall. It was then he decided to make sure there was no way she was getting out. He put a padlock and chain on her lock. She eventually solved that problem too. She taught the horse in the stall next to hers to open her stall, and kick the padlock with her hooves until the lock gave in and broke. Her owner then decided to punish her by putting her in the muddy field for a couple of weeks, isolated from the other horses. Of course, he didn't know how good of a jumper she was.

Short story: She was already a mature mare when she was brought to the farm that would be her downfall. Trained to be a vaulting horse she was steadfast and strong ideal for a broodmare, or so the buyer thought. Onu was also extremely smart having been trained with riders used to the more unique style of competition. They encouraged the growth of her mind for most of her younger years and she took to this well.

It wasn't until she was trapped in a stall and starving that this intelligent mind started turning towards escape. The funny thing about living things is that they are programmed to live. Under all traumas, the brain is doing the best that it can to stay alive. When freezing to death it will sacrifice limbs in a bid to keep core temperature. When starving the entire body will start to consume itself to last just one more day, one more minute. So when trapped in a dirty stall with holes in the floorboards this mare adapted.

It wasn't an easy transition but the learning curve was made rather short by her desperation. It took her only a week to figure out the half-broken latch on her stall door, realizing that bumping the door with her chest as she played with the metal with her lips had the best chance of popping it open. From there she figured out where the feed room was only to find it long since emptied. Onu was resilient despite the trauma she'd been living through, despite the loss of 2 foals being weaned too early in the years she has been here, she never lost spirit. When the rescuers arrived and opened the doors she was the first horse they saw standing in the aisle fiddling with the doorknob of one of the side doors that led to outside.

Even after adoption and rehabilitation she still remembers figuring out the previous lock and whenever she starts to feel anxious or bored she'll play with latches, locks, and handles until she can roam free. Her new home has learned to give her decoy latches and stall toys when she needs to be kept in though they do their best to leave her out weather permitting.
