It was one of those boringly normal days on the ranch today, though work was plentiful. The day before, a storm rolled in, pouring down for what seemed like an eternity. By the morning, it had cleared, leaving behind mud and loose stones. The horses were groggy and were more stubborn than us when woken up. The weather had put everybody in a gloomy mood, yet the horses still had to be brought out to the pasture. No doubt they would need baths after, though, with the current state of the terrain.
I soon had the horses out of the stables and into the pasture, draping a towel over the fence before sitting atop it. I had begun reading when it occurred to me that a horse had started to whinny in what seemed like distress, following the rest of the horses. Dropping the book, I had ran over to where they were gathered, all pressed against the fence at the side of the pasture. Some had started stomping their hooves and pacing, tails swishing in what seemed to be alarm, confusion, and worry. I could only assume the worst.
I quickly maneuvered my way around them, being careful as to not cause them to panic more. That’s when something caught my eye. In a small ditch, filled with mud, was a muddy mustang. I could only imagine it had been there for at least a few hours. It looked exhausted, shivering badly. I quickly brought out my phone, dialing the other workers on the ranch, panicking. I didn’t know what to do at the time, but when help had arrived, along with some fire and rescue that were called. We eventually got the stressed mustang out, and tried to place a blanket on it, while trying to calm the wild horse down. It didn’t have the energy to run or even lift it’s head really. After a few more hours, the horse had regained enough of it’s strength to run into the nearby meadows, vanishing into the night.

Days went by. I couldn’t help but think about the well-being of the mustang. Was it alright? I had gotten up, ate breakfast, and started my chores as usual. I doubted I would see it again, and I didn’t want to go searching for it, though a part of me did. That was a wild mustang, and had most likely had little to no interaction with humans. I was putting the horses in the pasture again, when I saw the shape of a horse by the fence. I had gotten closer, though by the demeanor of it, I could tell it was wary, and didn’t want me near. It flattened it’s ears, shaking it’s head and began to paw at the ground. I stopped my movements, before walking to the side, a little ways away from the mustang. Carefully climbing over the pasture fence, I set a carrot down on the ground. It gave me an odd look, nostrils flaring, eyes showing it’s uncertainty. I retreated back into the pasture, smiling at the mustang. I watched from the corner of my eye, pleased as it gingerly ate the carrot, which quickly turned into fast crunching, hungrily gobbling it down. At least now I could sleep with the knowledge that it was doing alright. Though, it still had mud coating it’s body.

Another couple days had past, and I had occasionally seen the mustang. I now knew it was mare, though it tended to act tough and stubborn, unlike having the usual gentleness of a mare. Every time I had seen her, I would bring her carrots, which allowed me to progressively get closer. Today, the mare made another appearance, at the edge of the pasture, like usual. It looked around expectantly, it’s ears perking then flattening as it saw me. It shook it’s head, ears wobbling left and right as it tried to rid it’s mane of the matted mud and dirt that still stuck to her body. It must be uncomfortable, and it most likely added a little bit of weight. I watched for a moment. Even with all the mud, she looked elegant and beautiful. Even if she was a bit odd. She has slowly begun to come out of her shell, showing how much of a quirky mare she was. She had taken a liking to one of the stallions, which she could sometimes be seen racing along the fence with. I know i’m getting too attached, but, I believe this beautiful creature might just need a friend as much as I do.

the morning air was crisp, and the mud on the muddy mustang had seemed to harden a bit more, which brought discomfort to the mare. it had been a week since my last journal entry, and our bond has grown stronger. the past month or so has been tough, but it felt like the beginning of something. something good. I went out to the pasture, expecting to see the mare at her usual place by the fence. I was disappointed to see she wasn’t there. when I turned around, I saw her in the pasture, running around with the other horses. startled, I wondered how she had gotten in. The only logical explanation was that she had jumped the fence, which was completely unexpected. I approached, and she ceased her running when she saw me. Once again unexpected, she trotted towards me. Her muscles were relaxed, tail swishing as she walked. Something seemed off. Once in front of me, she dipped her head, nostrils flaring as she took a deep inhale. I couldn’t help but chuckle. She knew what I had brought for her. I got the carrot from my pocket, extending a hand curiously. I watched in amazement as she leveled her mouth to the palm of my hand, eating the carrot. I smiled, and for a second, I could have sworn I saw something like a smile on her, too. She looked happy. Content. Digging into my pocket, I fished out some sugar cubes. She slowly ate them, prodding at the ground with a hoof happily. I lifted my hand, holding my breath as my fingers touched her muddy fur. I pet down her nose, humming softly.

bath-time task

Two days after I got the mare situated, I knew she trusted me enough to let me brush her, though the bristles would get stuck whenever I attempted to. I patted her shoulder and talked for a bit, mostly to myself, while she ate. I found myself frequently asking the question, “why didn't she clean herself?” Then i noticed her odd behavior around water. If she was scared of water, trying to clean her would be a million times worse. Through trial and error, though, I was confident I would succeed. Grabbing the halter, I decided to try and get her to let me put it on, though she seemed very conflicted. She didn't understand what I was trying to do exactly, but I could tell she knew she could trust me. After a while, I was able to slip it on her, praising her and giving her treats as a reward, which she greatly appreciated. Next, I practiced leading her, so she wouldn't get nervous if she had to be brought anywhere. I then had to go through the straining process of getting her near water. But after I had accomplished that, we were set to go. I prepared for the straining process of washing her, but then again, I liked a good challenge.
Bringing Levity to the area where I would bathe her, I connected rope to her harness, then to two fence posts, one on her left and one to her right. I turned the hose on, humming as I massaged the water into the mud of her coat. It was warm, and had started to water down the mud, which now ran off her body and pooled in the center, before going down the drain they had in the floor. I grabbed the basket I had brought down with me, taking out the supplies I needed. I drizzled horse shampoo onto Levity, taking a brush and lathering it into her fur with circular motions. She was preoccupied with some oats that had been set up for her, though I could only guess that the bath felt good. The mud was gone after I had finished hosing her down, getting rid of the last bits of shampoo. She was beautiful, and she seemed to appreciate what had been done for her. Levity swished her tail, whinnying happily. I had felt great about being able to help her, and I was glad she was finally comfortable again.
