Prompt; The small Kalon sat shivering in the wet rain, unable to seek the shelter she needed from the miserable weather. Overhead, the skies showed no sign of letting up the torrential downpour, continuing to drench the young creature.
A short ways off, a cloaked Kalon stopped, noticing the small bundle of shivering fur, and turned to her.
“Small one, are you alright?” A soft voice spoke to her.
She shook her head. Marcus stopped and walked towards her, lying down and covering her with the heavy grey cloak he liked to wear, then turned his head to talk to her.
“Whatever is the matter? You should never be out in this inclement weather little one.”
“I know…I don’t want to be out here in the first place.” She replied, stifling a sob.
“Now, now, that won’t do. I need you to look at me, and let me know what is wrong.” Marcus spoke, lifting her face up so she would look him in the eyes.
“My parents….they couldn’t understand. I’m not as good as everyone else, and I’m not smart like all the other students at my school.”
“We all have our strengths and our weaknesses, but those are not for others to decide. They are for you to discover yourself, and doubtless you believe those things, but I see a small child who has only just started to learn things, and she cannot possibly be behind as far as she thinks.”
“But my parents don’t believe me…I don’t know what to do.”
Marcus frowned, knowing that it was a common problem for parents to not support the low grades of their children, even when they worked hard to get them.
“Come little one, show me where you live. I will have a talk with your parents, they may just not have a full grasp of the situation.” He carefully picked the small kalon up, placing her on his shoulders where she could still see from under the cloak, but avoid the weather.
Moments later, Marcus stood in front of a heavy doorway, having just rung the bell. After a few moments of hesitation, it swung open, revealing a family of Kalons who were warming themselves in front of a roaring fire. The mother noticed the small child he was carrying, and quickly met him to take her, bundling her in a heavy blanket and warming her.
She cried into her mothers fur, apologizing over and over again for not being good enough, as Marcus spoke to her father, explaining his concern. The father apologized, saying he had had a difficult week, but he should never have accused the child of not working hard for her school. Marcus then made sure everything was alright, before telling the family he would return to keep a watchful eye over the youngster as she grew up, and left quietly, as the kalon slept peacefully in her parents warm embraces.
