A young calf pranced about the open land.

It was the calf's first nightfall away from the barns and she was obviously enjoying herself. "Chai," her mother cooed, "Be careful, dear." The calf gave a nod and continued frolicking over the cool grass, her eyes fixed on the starry sky. One star in particular caught and held Chai's attention, causing her to stumble and fall.

Her mother rushed over and began tending to Chai's scrapes, glancing up at the sky briefly, "What were you looking at?" The calf nodded towards the brightest star in the sky and a smile spread across her mother's face. She settled in beside the calf and told her all about ursa minor and the polaris star within it.

Weeks later, Chai was wondering off and got lost. Her stomach dropped as she realized she was in unfamiliar land, her heart racing. She'd never been this far away from her herd before and the stars were already out. Panic was setting in and the ground felt like it was spinning when she spotted a particularly bright star. That's when her mother's words rang through her mind.

'If you lose your way, follow the brightest star in the sky; it will always bring you home.'

Chai has a major case of wanderlust + a need for adventure, but she's still not quite found herself yet. She tends to alienate herself and be cynical, though she is overall sweet, calm and passionate. Imo these encompass that + give off a feeling of adventure and calmness that suits her.

↪ rejected by her mother, sionnach was hand-reared by one of the younger member of the solK family. the child spent much of their time in the barn with her, each helping the other flourish. the child had never been a confident reader, but with sionnach they began to take out books during their visits and read outloud to her. the books (unknowingly to sionnach, by tom mccaughren) were about foxes relearning the secret of survival, and they used a constellation called the running fox to navigate. when sionnach began to interact more with the rest of the herd, sage told her about the stars and constellations to help her when she was feeling nervous and out of place. upon learning that there was a fox constellation like in the books she cherished, she became extremely excited, and even the constellation's she makes up herself don't hold such a place in her heart as vulpecula; she hopes someday to tell a special heifer about vulpecula and those books. constellation: Ursa Major, the Great Bear
Ursa Major is known as the 'greater she-bear' and is visible from the Northern hemisphere year-round. This constellation also includes the big dipper! It has a rich and lengthy history even tying into mythology. It was first talked about by Ptolemy in the 2nd century, and is tied with a greek nymph by the name of Callisto who was turned into a bear by Hera. The Ursa major is also referenced in Homer and the Bible, as it's one of the oldest constellations. Within the Ursa Major there is multiple "deep sky objects" - including bode's galaxy, cigar galaxy, owl nebula, and the famous pinwheel galaxy. Key adores this constellation because she's a nut for history, literature, and mythology. It both amazes and inspires her that she can look up and see what ancient greeks wrote about - plus Key is very invested in the girl-power movement and loves to point out there's an awesome momma bear in the sky. Key grew up without a family but often heard stories of ursa major; when asked of her family she would always say the same thing. She came from the great bear in the sky. {196}

The tale goes that Ariadne, a Cretan princess, was left by Theseus after helping him defeat the Minotaur. She was abandoned on an island where she was found weeping by a man, who immediatley fell in love with her. Soon enough, the two were married. At her wedding, she wore a crown made by a God, Hephaestus. She then threw it into the air. The jewels are said to have turned into the stars that make up the constellation.

Polaris grew up hearing this story and many others. As simple as it is, she had always loved to listen to the tale, and grew up with a more hopeful attitude. The short tale helped Polaris learn that although there are rough patches in life, someone or something will come along and make it worth getting through

because of how small and simple it is. It's

Why?:

Not only did Adhara grow up running with the local dogs, she is named after one of the stars in the constellation. That alone gives her a reason to have a certain fondness of the pattern in the night sky, but it's not the only reason. One of the stars in the constellation is called Sirius, or the Dog Star, which Adhara has used to guide herself home when she wandered a little too far off the beaten path.

constellation: her favorite constellation is the columba constellation, which is a dove.

reason: when amity was young, she found a wounded baby dove laying on the ground
while she had been wandering, without a family in sight. she felt pity on it, relating to it as
she had felt the same once before in her life. she once woke up without her mother to be
found anywhere, feeling abandoned and cold, but she had then found a family of deer that
began raising her as if she were one of their own and was no different. she knew that now,
she could do the same for this dove, and proceeded to take her in, calling her adalie.
although there was an obvious language barrier, they still saw eye to eye, understanding
each other without a need for words. so, their friendship began. if amity had any hardship,
she knew that she would not be facing it alone. of course, this meant she had to keep adalie
a secret from her deer family, because although she was thankful they took her in, she wasn't
going to press her luck giving them another addition to the family. everytime she sees or thinks
of this constellation, she thinks of her dearest friend.
