Cheshire's Quest Log
Task 1 - Unloading;Share a story in the unloading from the trailer
(50-100 Word Story)Given the fact I'd never unloaded a horse from a trailer in my life, I was perfectly content to stand back and let the Agency people do it. After all, this was their job, and they knew what was what! As I stood and watched a guy try to coax my new Grel out into daylight though, it occurred to me that I should play a more active part in all this. Someday. Being a chicken was no excuse for not knowing how to load and unload your own animals. I'd managed it with the Nera, hadn't I? And they were much bigger. Not to mention carnivorous... As I blinked the thought away, Chesh finally emerged from the depths of his trailer and stepped down onto Terra-ferma. His ears were pinned flat against his skull, and he danced nervously from side to side. This was my first time seeing him. And, to be perfectly honest, I still had no idea what he looked like. Not underneath all that mud! Geez! I guess I knew what I'd be doing first thing tomorrow....
Task 2 - Taming;Share a story in how you started taming, to be able to gain a bit of trust
(50-100 Word Story)I spent the rest of the day just lounging about with a book. See, after the Agency guy had turned Cheshire out in the paddock I'd pointed him to, he'd gone back to his truck and driven off, leaving me all alone with my little dirtball. And as badly as I wanted to see what the stallion looked like underneath all that crud, I didn't want to go near him yet. Not until he'd had a chance to calm down! The poor guy was obviously agitated, and kept pacing back and forth along the far fence-line, as if looking for a way out. So I flopped down in the grass nearby to keep an eye on him. I also used the time to make some headway in a new mystery book I'd picked up the other day. Thus, it was a win-win situation!
After a couple hours, it suddenly occurred to me that I hadn't heard a peep out of the stallion in quite some time. Looking up quickly to make sure he hadn't vaulted the fence or something, I was quite startled to discover that I was, in fact, being watched! There was Cheshire, not even five feet away, his ears perked forward curiously. I looked at him, he looked at me. Then, suddenly, he snorted loudly and trotted off. Though when he reached the far side of the paddock he stopped and looked back at me. I couldn't help but smile. At the very least, Chesh had decided I wasn't an immediate threat. Hopefully that bode well for the future!
Task 3 - Introduce to a herd;Introduce the Grelifcent to your/one of your herds.
(50-100 Word Story)Now that Cheshire had been here for several weeks and was beginning to calm down, I decided it was time to take him out of isolation. I kinda felt sorry for him - he'd gone from roaming the countryside with his friends to moping in the back of my paddock, quite literally overnight - and I didn't want to prolong his misery if it wasn't absolutely necessary. Thus, with some effort, I got a rope around his neck and moved him to a different field. This one was twice as large as the paddock had been, and had the added advantage of being within sight of the field where
Kitch's heard roamed. Once he got used to seeing them, hearing them, and smelling them (and once THEY got used to HIM), I planned on introducing them properly. One by one. But for now, the alert perk of Chesh's ears and the way he kept looking over in that direction was enough for me - he knew there were other Grells over there, and he was more alive than I'd seen him in days! Even if a good chunk of that 'liveliness' was, for the moment, caution.... it was still an improvement over moping. Right?
RIGHT...?
Task 4 - Fully Tamed;Share a story in how you connected with the Grelifcent
(50-100 Word Story)The day I knew Cheshire had finally accepted me as a friend came about a month and a half after he first arrived. By then, he'd been living with Kitch's herd full-time for two weeks, and I'd been making a point of heading out to their field twice a day to say 'hi' to everyone, just so he wouldn't get unused to seeing me. Now. When I headed out there, it was usual protocol for Marmalade to meet me at the gate. She would then follow me like a puppy as I headed out to where the rest of the herd was. At some point they'd spot me, and, in their own individual and quirky ways, they'd greet me. Chesh alone had kept his distance - he didn't seem to mind my approaching HIM, as long as I did so slowly, and as long as I first gained his attention by speaking. But he wouldn't approach ME. In fact, he hadn't done that since the first day.
What finally changed his mind...? I'll never know. Maybe he was tired of everyone else getting all the attention. Maybe he'd been looking for the right moment. Or maybe he didn't even realize he'd gotten so close - Kitch was between us at first - and just decided to roll with it. Whatever the reason though, on that one bright afternoon, I turned to find Chesh standing not even three feet away. His ears were perked forward, and as our eyes met, he snorted and took another half-step in my direction. Tentatively, I raised my hand. Chesh rewarded me by pressing his bony muzzle into my palm. We stood there for a second, at the center of the herd, before Chesh's nerve broke and he pulled away, allowing Marm to take his place.
This was definitely a turning point in our relationship. Over the coming days, Chesh would get bolder and bolder, his confidence around me growing in leaps and bounds! After another week, I'd feel good enough about our relationship to begin training him to saddle.
