Why would you like this boy?

I absolutely adore his golden coat! Blacks, Buckskins, and Buttermilks are my absolute favorite coats. I like how his legs look sparkled as well. His eye color is fantastically cute. He would make a wonderful first for me even if he is "plain" or "not special". He certainly is special enough for me!

What is his personality like?

Owen is a sweet lad. He's there to help when you need him. The golden boy wouldn't dare step on a fly if it bit him. Owen isn't much of a fighter. He prefers to work in the fields or pull carts for his owner. The golden lad wouldn't survive long as a war horse, but a job as a working horse isn't so bad either. With this life he is able to witness the real beauty of the world around him and even learn how things work in the real world. Some stallions come from battles changed and never the same, but here he can flourish.

Owen does have a small quirky nature. He can be silly and playful at times. He likes to play with some of the newborn foals and enjoys teaching them what it's like to be a horse. Human children are his absolute favorite. He enjoys chasing after them in play or laying down to let them crawl all over them. He is afraid of dogs and refuses to go near one, but adores cats. Every cat in the barn gets spoiled by this stallion in someway whether it's snuggles, belly rubs, or him scarring mice out of a corner for them to catch.

How did you tame him?

Owen was quite easy to tame. He was frightened in the trailer when he arrive at the chutes. The stallion had been a loner with no mares, but his pretty untouched coat made him highly sought after by the wranglers. Kat simply needed to gain his trust and show him that he was not to be harmed in any way. To gain his trust Kat tried offering him carrots and other rewards for small things. Like if he looked at her he was rewarded. She even rewarded him for walking over to her and scratched him behind the ear.

This taught the stallion that he would be given treats for just coming to her and expected such things. From there she did other tasks like petting and rubbing his back and legs. This simply taught him to not fear her touching him in specific areas. She moved on to holding halters, saddles, reins, and even harnesses to him. At first he was spooked and didn't know what to think, but with her kindness he quickly learned it was alright. Kat was even able to eventually lift his hooves and inspect them.

With time she was able to halter train him and tacked him up. Owen wasn't sure what to think and jumped around for a few moments, but with trusted Kat he was soon okay with the idea. From there Kat took him out on evening rides and taught him a few manners and etiquettes. She taught him to keep his head up until she dropped his reins. As soon as the reins hit the floor he was allowed to graze and sniff at flowers.

How did he earn his crop?

After learning how to be a good riding companion he was put in a training program for pulling carts and harvesters. Owen was skeptical about the harness he would need to wear and even feared the heavy leather contraption. Kat was there with him every step of the way and helped him get accustomed to the idea of wearing such a smelly thing.

With the harness on Kat taught him how to respond to commands. She would tap his shoulder to get him to walk or trot, but gently slapped his rump for jogging. She taught him to turn and to halt with the reins, but then taught him small secret commands. If she touched either of his sides he would sidestep away from it. If she touched his left side he would move right. This would be used in cases if he needed to move out of the line he was in to avoid something.

After all the training he was put to the test. His test was to correctly harvest 20 acres of land before the day was out. The golden lad pulled and pulled the entire day harvesting acre after acre of wheat, barley, corn, and even bran. He did as he was commanded and obeyed every command signaled to him. The carts he pulled back and forth grew heavy with time, but the stallion was determined to earn his crop and keep as a good harvester.

At the end of the test it was official: he had passed and was announced as a fine good harvester. His mane was cropped and the golden lad proudly wore it. He had earned his place in the new world and it felt right. Kat continued to ride him in the evenings, but he was given every Sunday and Wednesday off to be a horse and play in the grassy fields. In time, Owen hoped to see more horses join him in the world of harvesting.
