Lazy - Unwilling to work or use energy.
Usually not able to be bothered to do much, Zodiac spends the majority of his time lazing in and around the den he "convinced" a passing earth elemental to make for him. Most things simply are not worth his time or effort.
Aloof - Conspicuously uninvolved and uninterested, typically through distaste.
He finds absolutely no part of himself that cares about most of the world. He cares about himself, his sister, and whoever might hold his affections in the future, if anyone ever can. He cares nothing for the war, for the pride, or the rebellion. He just wants to be left alone.
Quiet - Tranquil and reserved by nature; not brash or forceful.
It is frustratingly difficult to get a reaction out of Zodi. This trait goes paw-in-paw with his laziness, as most of the time he just cant be bothered to react to something. No amount of threats or jibes can elicit a response other than perhaps a condescending one. He usually just ignores those he dislikes, which is nearly everyone.
Broody - Thoughtful and unhappy.
Pessimist - Tends to see the worst aspect of things or believe that the worst will happen.
Zodi has always been rather glum, but ever since the tragedies and heartbreak in his life, he has become moreso. He spends long hours thinking about the past and being glum about the future. He doesn't believe that anything will change, much less get better for him, so why bother?
Loner - Prefers not to associate with others.
As is shown by his decision to live on the outskirts of pride land, Zodiac prefers to be alone. He gets stressed when he is forced into a situation where there are many lions around him.
Snarky - Sharply critical; cutting; snide.
Any time he is forced to interact with other lions, they usually find him to be unpleasent company. He will find anything to complain about, usually at the other lion's expense. When others try to speak with him, his replies are usually short and cutting. He is heavily sarcastic in both stance and speech.
Unforgiving - Not willing to forgive or excuse faults or wrongdoings.
Once someone does something to offend him, Zodiac never forgets it, or forgives it. He will hold onto it, thinking about it over and over again until he has convinced himself that he was done a great wrong that was undeserved. If it wasn't so much work, he would get revenge for the wrongs.
Egotistical - Excessively conceited or absorbed in oneself; self-centered.
Beliving that he is unjustly targeted by whatever force that rules the cosmos, Zodi feels that he deserves much better. In his own eyes, he can do no wrong and in any situation where bad feelings arise, he is quick to place the blame on the other party. He feels that he is superior to other lions and doesnt mind pointing that out.
Protective - Having or showing a strong wish to keep someone or something safe from harm.
Zodiac currently has no one around him that he feels close to, but if he did, he would guard them from harm. Partially this was brought on by his father's harsh denouncement of him, which made him determined that if he were to be put in a similar situation, he would react differently.
Loyal - Giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a lion or institution.
If he feels that something is worth his time, which he rarely does, he remains loyal to that purpose or individual. Unfortunately, most of his family ties are weakened though, and he bears the most loyalty to his sister Mariska. If his father were to return to him one day, well... Who knows.
Stretched out on his back in his fur-covered bed, Zodiac lazily scratched at his white belly. He licked his lips and yawned, his long fangs gleaming. His mouth snapped shut and he sat up. He leaned back against the wall and moved back and forth, scratching his back on a projecting piece of stone. He sighed contentedly as he dropped back onto all fours. He had just laid back down and rolled onto his back when someone walked into his den. Opening one eye, he looked at the visitor from his upside-down vantage point. When the lion said nothing, Zodiac growled, "What?"
The intruder glared at him in distaste and said, "I was instructed to inform you that a squadron of warriors will be moving out tomorrow, and to... request that you accompany them." The words were said with a sneer, the bearer of the announcement quite obviously disapproving of Zodiac.
The green lion looked at the stranger for a moment, then closed his eyes. "No, thanks," he said with a small wave of his paw. He yawned again and shifted his position slightly to get more comfortable.
"You are worse than I'd heard."
Zodiac opened one eye again. "Are you still here?" He closed his eye. "Go away."
The other lion gave an indignant huff and stormed out, but just before he left, he said, "Vanhedra and Reno will be marching with the group."
Actually surprised, Zodiac opened both of his eyes, but the messenger was gone. He rolled onto his belly, frowning. Why would his mother be going to war? He knew she hadnt been altogether well for years. Eventually, he shrugged and rolled onto his side. It was their choice in the end, and there wasn't anything he could do about it.Still reeling from the news he had just gotten, Zodiac didn't know what to do with himself. He ended up not bothering to do much of anything and just laid in his den and grieved for his mother and brother, who he had been told had fallen in battle. He wondered vaguely if it would have been different if he had gone with them... But probably not. He was no fighter. His mind was a dark cloud of brooding thoughts and turbulent emotions when his father, Loke, showed up in the doorway to his small den. The sky was at its darkest and his father stood in the doorway, his eyes glowing in the faint light. Zodiac felt an unexpected rush of emotion at the sight, touched that Loke had sought him out to grieve with him. "Dad..." He choked out, starting to rise from his bed. Lightning flashed in Loke's eyes and he growled in a low, deceptively calm voice, "You... you should have been out there." Zodiac could see Loke's sides heaving with emotion, even if his voice was steady. His own emotions raged inside of him, but he had withdrawn into himself at his father's words.
Loke glared at him, the disappointment and grief contorting his features for a moment before he collected himself again. "If you were half the lion your brother was, *you* would have died beside him. Beside..." His voice choked off for a moment before he went on. "Beside your mother." Zodiac thought he saw Loke's eyes shine with unshed tears, but it could have just been from the reflecting light in the den. Loke turned his back on Zodiac. "You disappoint me." And then he was gone. His hurt emotions weighing on him heavily, Zodiac paid no attention to his surroundings. His was angry with his father for his words and blamed Loke for the pain he now felt. He was still grieving for his mother and brother, even if they might have grown apart, they were still family. Eventually, Zodi finds himself in unfamiliar territory far from the Pride Lands. He looks around him at the barren, gray, dusty landscape. It wasn't much to look at, but what did he care? He found a likely place to stay and settled down. He spent all of his time either sleeping or playing the scene with his father over again in his head. With every repetition he grew more and more agitated. His dreams were filled with his father's flashing eyes and his own sinking feeling would wake him up after just a short time asleep. After a couple of days of this, he was exhausted. He began to feel an unfamiliar sensation in his belly. It was only then that he remembered that he would have to hunt if he was to stay out here in the Unknown lands. He rolled his eyes. Not gonna happen. He heaved himself to his feet and slowly trudged back to the borders of the Pride's lands, and when he felt the feeling of hunger fade, he stopped travelling. This was a good place to lurk, he decided. Far enough away from the Pride so he could be alone and unbothered, yet close enough to benefit from the gold dust that sustained them. Oh yeah, he thought with a smug smirk as he chose a location to call home. This is the life. He had found an underground den that had perhaps belonged to another lion, and he did not hesitate to claim it as his own. It was quite spacious and was also well-hidden. It was perfect.Zodiac relaxed with his back to a lone bloodwood tree, occasionally dipping into the sap that ran down the bark and smearing it onto his tongue with a satisfied sigh. He let his chin rest on his chest and closed his eyes, enjoying the quiet. Suddenly though, he heard the sound of a large creature approaching. He sat up and swept his mane out of his eyes. He readied a few shadows and looked in the direction the sound came from. A large, multi-colored lion with huge horns stepped into his field of vision and Zodiac narrowed his eyes. He looked the newcomer over, seeing the scars on his face and chest. When the lion made no move to attack, or do anything for that matter, Zodi leaned back against the tree again. "You're trespassing, you know," he said in a bored tone. He started to close his eyes again when the other lion smirked. Suddenly Zodiac felt a sharp claw under his chin and heard a voice in his ear.
"Why don't you do something about it, then?"
He tried to look at the second lion, obviously a female from the sound of her voice. She was not visible without him turning his head, but with her razor-sharp claw on his throat he figured it would be best to remain still. He showed no outward reaction though, and just said, "I prefer to let shadows do my fighting for me."
The lioness removed the point from his throat and chuckled. She came around to where he could see her and said, "I figured as much. We've been watching you for a long time now." Her expression showed a hint of disdain.
Zodiac blinked slowly, unmoved. "So? What do you want?"
The small purple lioness lifted a paw and licked the metal claws that she wore. Zodiac did not doubt that she could use them with skill and speed. "Information," came the short and simple answer.
Perking his ears slightly, Zodiac looked at her with interest. "What kind of information?"
She shrugged and walked over to the big lion that she had apparently used as a distraction to be able to sneak up from behind him. "Any kind of information. And in return I can give you information." She leaned smugly against her large companion's front leg.
Zodiac noticed with amusement the huge size difference between the two. He made her look like a cub.
"The first bit of information I'd like from you is your names." Zodiac wasn't about to give his first.
The small lioness seemed to ponder for a moment, then said, "I am Kaona and this is Càthan. We work together. And work together well, as you can attest." She leveled her blue eyes on Zodiac. "Your turn."
Zodi looked at both of them, impressed in spite of himself. At least with the little lioness. The big male's expression had not changed since the female had made her appearance. Disdain was plain on his face. Zodi returned the expression and said, "I am Zodiac, son of Loke and Vanhedra."
Kaona nodded once. "I will be back. I have interest in a mutual exchange of information." She turned without waiting for an answer and bounded away. The lion she called Càthan looked at him scathingly for a moment longer, then he also left, following the lioness.
Zodiac watched the place they had disappeared for a while, then shrugged and leaned back against his tree once again. "Well, that was weird," he muttered to himself.
Mariska was always Zodiac's favorite family member, and he has always been very protective of her. Eventually though, this protectiveness is what drove the wedge between the siblings. Always concerned that his sister would be mistreated or otherwise misused, Zodiac made a habit of running off any lions who got too close, namely any potential suitors. However, Mariska wanted a mate and Zodiac's continued behavior was a problem. Eventually, they came together again, but it was never quite the same. Mariska is the only remaining family he has that he is on speaking terms with.
Being Mariska's mate, Zodiac attempts to show no hint of the feelings he has for Eisig. He feels that no lion is good enough for or to his sister, no matter what the reality may be. But he does not want to cause another rift between himself and Mari, so he makes an effort to keep his head.
Once looking up to his father, Zodiac now thinks of him with mixed emotions. He still loves him, but the love is tainted by the emotions of the day of their last meeting. He has not seen Loke since that day, and many times he has imagined how their next meeting would play out. Sometimes Zodi imagines it being full of his anger and hurt, other times with love and longing. His memories cloud his future sight in many ways.
The small lioness intrigues Zodiac, and he enjoys their meetings even if he would not admit to it. She is a seemingly endless source of information that interests him, as long as he has information to pay her back with.
When Kaona visits him, she is almost always accompanied by a big brute of a lion. Zodiac is not fond of Càthan or the looks the horned lion gives him. He knows that Càthan disapproves of his lifestyle, but Zodi feels Càthan has no room to judge him. He does not look with favor on Càthan's life situation, either.
Most of Zodiac's moves do not tax his energy too much. Only a couple really take a real amount of effort, which makes it rare that he uses those.
He places dark orbs over the eyes of the unlucky lion, rendering them blind until he removes the darkness. Sometimes he uses this on his own eyes, enabling him to sleep no matter the light levels around him. He finds it to be relaxing.
Can cause a lion's mind to become muddled, almost as if they were in a fog. This makes them easier to manipulate. This takes quite a bit of energy to do, so Zodi rarely uses it.
He manipulates shadows to mimic the shapes of Arknon's spirits, minus the glowing yellow bits. Most lions don't stop to question it though and it keeps his den free from intruders. This also takes a good deal of energy, but less energy than it would to fight off an enemy, so he goes with it.
Causes a huge mass of darkness to engulf his own form, taking the shape of a much larger lion. This is an intimidating move designed to frighten off enemies or intruders without him having to actually do much.
Currently Zodiac lives on his own at the borders of
the pride's lands, drawing on the gold dust so he does
not have to put the effort in to actually hunt for himself,
but is still far enough away from the pride to have his
solitude. After about a hundred years of this, after the
end of the war, he begins to think of his past in a different
light. This change is due to someone he meets while he
is living alone, who makes him really reassess his life and
his choices. He comes to realize that most if not all of
his problems were his own doing. In the end, he decides
to go back and speak with his sister, Mariska. He will tell
her everything that he had been thinking about and try
to get her opinion. Change will be slow and painful for
him, if it comes at all. It is not easy to overthrow
hundreds of years of habits and lifestyle choices. This
causes him much grief and so many times he wonders
why he is trying, that he would rather be back in his
den in the middle of nowhere. He slips often, and steps
on a lot of toes, but eventually, perhaps, he will succeed
in his mission to do better. Maybe he won't though,
maybe he will fail and give up and go back to his
solitude. Only time will tell.
