story:
Everything was bright. This was all he knew. The harshness of the bright lights. The whirring of machines, the hum of voices just out of his sight. Then everything changed. A strange smell filled the air, it burned his nose and his lungs. He found that staying low to the ground and crawling over it was easier to breathe. One of the shadowy figures became corporeal. He recognized their scent, this one had always been nice to him. He somehow managed to get him onto his back enough to where he could drag the man with him. Coughing and groaning let him know that he was still with him.
Fresh air. It was just as much of a shock as the burning choking air had been. He only had enough time to see all the color. Then the man slid down his his side as the world went dark. He woke up in another white room, but it was different somehow. It was just as sterile, but not hostile, or empty. There was another bed, he recognized the scent. Strangers cloaked in white came in with clipboards. He tried to get away, but found he was strapped to the bed. Soothing hands brushed his fur and he was soon asleep again.
Voices woke him, something about a viscling. What was that? What did it look like? The familiar scent and voice soothed him, and he saw the man he had dragged to the fresh air. He was covered in stuff; some of it white, and others were brown. The white bits looked like they made it so he couldn't move. The man smiled down at him, and spoke to the doctor again. A soothing hand brushed his fur, and he slept again.
When he awoke, he was in a different room. It was an explosion of color. It was almost overwhelming. He also found that he wasn't tied down anymore. He gingerly got off the bed, and walked around. He breathed too quickly and it made him cough, that scared him. A friendly woman and man came in one of them set a tray of food on top of a thing. It looked like a table, but none he had seen before. The man was messing with something behind a curtain. He could smell something behind it, but he was too scared to go look. The food was enticing, and when he tasted it he couldn't believe it.
He had thought his food before had tasted good, but it tasted like nothing compared to this. He wolfed it down and waddled back to his bed to go sleep. The nurse smiled, and said something about children and their appetites. He didn't know what this meant. He was almost asleep when a loud clanging woke him. He looked towards the offending sound and saw something, or rather, someone. They looked like a little man. He slowly approached this strange man. Then the small man offered him the noisy thing.
"Haven't you ever seen a toy before?" the small man asked.
Toy? "What's a toy?" he asked.
"You can speak! I heard the nurses saying how the weren't sure if you could understand them, and said you might not be able to talk. Oh, and a toy is something you play with! Like this, see?" and the small man showed him what a toy was and how to play with it. It was a lot of fun.
Seeing that questions were okay, he decided to ask another, " why are you a small man?"
The small man started making loud noises, and he wasn't sure if he had upset the small man.
"No, silly! I'm a kid! A boy specifically. I'm a kid like you! Well, you'd be called a viscling," the boy said.
He also realized that the "viscling" the nurses mentioned earlier was him, he was was a viscling. Suddenly tired from all this new information, and still having a full belly, he crawled into his bed and promptly fell asleep.
The wonderful smell of scrambled eggs woke him up. He was learning rapidly. Every day he pestered the nurses and the doctors, asking about anything and everything he could think of. The boy, Kyle, was also happy to answer his questions. Kyle could read, and that's how he found out what his own name was. Norman. He like that name, because it was his. Actually, he liked names a lot. They made it so much easier to identify certain people. Like his doctor, Doctor Ruth. Or, Jacob, the man he had saved form the fire. That was another thing he had learned about; fire.
Jacob said he would take care of him now. Norman wasn't so sure, he didn't want to go back to the empty place. When he told Jacob this he just hugged him, and said he'd never have to go back there again. Norman liked Jacob. His right foot was a little funny, it was missing a few toes. Said that they had to be amputated due to a piece of metal falling on it before Norman could pull him out. That was something no one knew; just how he had managed to pull Jacob out. When they tested how much he could pull, as part of seeing how recovered he was, he couldn't even pull half of Jacob's weight on a good day.
When they went to their house, Norman was really excited. Jacob had let him pick the color of his room. He really liked the color called "magenta". It was like the colors on his body. His room had a big bed in it. And lots of toys, and books. Jacob had promised that he would teach Norman to read. Kyle came to visit sometimes. They played in his room, a lot.
Thinking back on it, despite his unusual beginnings, Norman's childhood wasn't all that bad.
