Twinname: Kind des Kriegsgottes | Penthesilea

Reason for the lack of her lower mane:
Hippolyte and Penthesilea are born at and raised from a tribe of Amazons. Following their peoples traditions, which demand that an Amazon girl gives away the breast on the side of her sword arm to be considered a woman, fillys get the lower half of their manes cropped when they are old enough to be considered a mare.
This lack of the lower portion and the short cut of the upper portion of Hippolytes mane is not only aesthetical or to show her membership of an Amazon tribe. In battle, it gives her rider also the chance to fight with their sword – without interference or interruption of the mane. Quite similiar to a stallion with a cropped mane, but with a glance of femininity still clinging on the mares.

Meaning of the markings:
In the culture Penthesilea and Hippolyte were born in, these markings (as they are actually a permanent hair dye, comparable to our tattoos) are given to strong and succesfull mares who proved themself in battles. Each mare gains its own set of markings and no two horses have the same. The stronger a mare is, the more and larger markings she has (from none up to three), and if she proves her power not only in war or arena-like battles against other mares but in both, it is possible to gain the highest honor of all: the allowance to wear the marking on both sides. Hippolyte and Penthesilea have both earned that honor for all three of their markings and are considered to be like a force of nature amongst the Amazons.

Image

Personality:
Hippolyte is an friendly, energetic and brave Mare, who loves to play tricks with her sister. But she always thinks about the consequences and makes sure that no one gets hurt by their actions. She can be very protective, especially when it comes to Penthesilea and would never disobey her rider in a battle."

Friendly ● Intelligent ● Hesitant ● Brave ● Curious
Kehinde is much more likely to get along with new people, two legged or four.
Openly curious she liked to explore new relationships and personalities before
passing judgment. She is more good natured and steady than her sister, less
likely to spook. She is also smart, and more able to troubleshoot a sudden
obstacle, but she is more likely to balk and take her time looking before
attempting new things.

Image
Kehindes markings match the color of her sisters eyes, and their eye markings
are likewise similar. Beyond that their riders have personalized them. Hviske has
chosen more flowing smooth lines to represent Kehindes personality, and rough
shapes that could be interpreted as several elements from historical stories that
he loves. On her withers, a growing plant or a shovel digging for a buried
treasure. On her croup a sailing ship, or a dragon. His runes, like a good tale, are
open to interpretation.

Image
Kehinde loves Taiye, and tolerates her foolishness better than almost any other
horse. When they are together Kehinde is more outgoing and prone to action and
Taiye is less likely to spook or get in ridiculous situations.

Image
Kehinde and Taiye had a good portion of their manes cropped for their bravery,
having beyond any shadow of a doubt proven themselves in combat. Part of their
mane was left however to differentiate them from stallions.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬(THEIR STORY)▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

It was supposed to be easy. Or at least as easy as war ever was. Their scouts had found a small enemy group pressing inwards. This wasn't unusual. Sometimes they sent armies, just as often they sent small groups to harry and retreat. If the tribe was a bull then sometimes their enemies fought them head on, daring the horns, but more often they were a quick spear to the flank, bleeding, bleeding, one drop at a time.

So to find them before they struck was great good fortune. It was to be routine for Hviske and his sister Kusima. Together on their mares, also twins, solid Kehinde and fiery Taiye, they would ride with a dozen or so other archers in support of a solid two hands of chargers and put down their enemies before they had a chance to strike. Outnumbering them three to one, it would be no contest.

Or so they thought.

What they didn't count on was an enemy commander much more cunning than those they'd faced in the past. His predecessor having suffered loss after resounding loss had been demoted. Terminally. Leodegrance did not intend to meet such an end, and so he'd discarded the traditional forms of warfare. Discarded honour. The group that had been spotted were always meant to be seen. It was a trap, to draw the unsuspecting tribe in.

"Winds changing, it'll throw our shots off, we should shift a bit." Hviske commented, watching Kehindes long mane flow in the wind.

"We'll be out of line." Kusima replied

"Aye but not by much, besides if we have no shot we're a useless part of the line. We're not Vanguard, it doesn't matter as much."

"All right, if you think so."

Hviske nudges Kehinde forward and up a slight incline, if he's right, from the top of the rise they'll have a perfect shot and the wind will be with them, extending their range rather than throwing them off. Kusima follows close behind. A few minutes later he's smiling in satisfaction as he rolls his shoulders, limbering up. Below he can pick out their stallions and a few mares charging the few enemy who are quite wisely retreating with haste.

"Ha! Lookit them run! I bet Papa's having fun!"

"He'll probably complain there's not enough- ..wait." Hviskes brows draw together. Something wrong. Something about the ground their fighters are galloping towards.. Something is too.. regular.

"No! Trap! TRAP!" Hviske yells desperately, they won't be able to hear him. The wind might bring his voice to them if they were standing quietly but galloping and whooping their war cries? Never. His fists clench as he watches the first few Rajarshi fall into the pits, covered with brush. The others start to pull up, not wanting to risk their precious mounts. He can hear faint yells of anger and confusion. And then something much worse. The horns their enemies use start to ring out, and not from the group who were retreating, although they wheel now to face their pursuers. From the sides pour in more of their enemy, so many more.

Now the horns bay out from behind them and to their right. They were flanked! He could hear their fellow archers crying out, hear their mares whinnying. Kusime started to urge Taiye back they way they'd come. He pulled Kehinde around to block her.

"No! We have to run! There's too many and we're surrounded!"

"But they need us! And Papa!"

"What good are we to him caught or dead? Go! Run!" He kicks Kehinde forward, and though he fears for a moment, he hears Taiye behind. His heart is racing.

"Oi there go two!"

Something whistles overhead. Hviske is shocked to see an arrow ricochet off a tree just a bit ahead of him. "Faster!"

On flat ground their attacks mounts though weaker and more fearful are often faster, but the Rajarshi are in their own territory, rocky hills and forest, and they outpace and outlast their enemies, though its near dusk before Hviske feels safe to pull Kehinde to a stop. He's shaking, he realises. He looks over at Kusima as she pulls in beside him and sees tears still running down her face. "W-we should get home, but we need to rest the ladies first, and then go wide, in case they're- in case they're still looking."

Kusima doesn't reply, she just stands there. "Kusima!"

She looks up suddenly, and the tears are still on her face but no more are falling. She shakes her head, once. "No."

"No? What do you mean no? We have to-"

"NO Hviske! We're not leaving them. You know we'll never see them again if we do. We're not leaving Papa."

"B-but it's just us, we can't-"

"I KNOW! I know, it's impossible! But we're going to do it anyway. You're the smart one, you know all the tales, so think Hviske! Find a way for us to do it smart or I'll do it stupid, you know I will!"

Gods knew she probably would gallop in alone with her bow if he didn't stop her. It was mad, he should find some way to talk her out of it, to bring her home, so at least Mama wouldn't lose them all in one night but-. But she was right. Tribemates were taken and those who were didn't come back. Their enemy liked to gloat about how civilized they were, but it was hard to see in their actions.

"Okay, okay I-.. I need to think."

Kusima, having won, nodded, taking Kehindes reins. She'd strip the mares and rub them down. Water them from their canteens. Mount before yourself. Without your mount you were nothing. Hviske paced restlessly, rubbing a hand along his head. The tribe did most things in hands, they'd taken seven hands in total for this exercise. Assume then that the enemy had at least fourteen hands. How could two alone defeat fourteen hands? Even if they could sneak in and free all their warriors and rearm them, numbers alone meant they'd be cut down. That meant somehow the odds had to be evened. How could he and Kusima alone incapacitate that many enemies? You couldn't just sneak in and cut throats, there'd be sentries, and you'd be lucky to get one hand, maybe two if the Gods were on your side dispatched and then they'd be on you and it wouldn't be enough.

"Here," Kusima thrust the canteen at him. "drink, the ladies left us some."

He took it absentmindedly and pulled a long swig, swishing it around his fear parched throat before swallowing it, then he froze. Staring at the canteen in his hand. "That's it!"

"What?"

"Fourteen hands, and we know we're much farther from their homes than ours. They don't know the land as well either. They'd have had to bring supplies. We don't have to get to each soldier, we just have to get to their supplies. I was learning history but you were-"

"With the healer!"

"Yes! And he always said-" Here Kusima chimed in with him "Half of healing is knowing what hurts and how to avoid it."

"So you know what can hurt them, you can find it!"

"I-I can, but for fourteen hands.. I doubt I'll find enough of anything to, to.. you know. To get rid of them permanently.."

"Kusima it doesn't matter! Knock them out! Upset their stomachs so badly they can't run without the squirts! Make them hallucinate! Just make them ineffective! Can you do it?"

"I- Yes. Yes I can do it."

He was grinning now. Maybe they'd still die. Maybe they would. They'd have to find the herbs, sneak them in, judge their timing just so, get their tribesmates out.

"What about guards?"

"What?"

"Well our guards don't eat when they're on duty and they have their own canteens, surely theres will too. For nearly seven hands of us, they'll likely have more guards than we can dispatch of quickly enough, even if all our shots go true."

"You're right. We'll need something to distract them. If we have to one of us can yell and then run but-"

"I'll do it."

"but that's dangerous and stupid so we're not going to." He finished, glaring at her. Looking around for inspiration he saw a last late bumblebee buzzing somnolently over a patch of violets, soon it would be gone, back to the hive for the night. A slow grin split his face. "Do you remember the story of List and the giant?"

"What do fairfolk tales have to do with-"

"Do you remember how she threw him off her trail?"

"She lobbed a beehive at his toes and.. oh."

"Why not? The bees have been busy this year, if we find a few hives, cut them down quietly, they'll already be in for the night, as long as we're gentle until they hit the ground it will be perfectly safe. And whats a sting or two to get Papa back?"

"I hate bees."

"I know. I'll do bees, you'll do herbs. You get supplies, I'll get sentries. We'll both try and make it to wherever they're keeping the tribe to start cutting folks loose."

"No, the horses. They'll have them seperate. And I'll get theirs too. You go to Papa, I'll find the Rajarshi."

"It will be dangerous."

"I know."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. I love you Hviske."

"I love you too. We can do this."

"Aye, they'll remember the hero twins who pull this off!"

"You'd best believe it! I hope you ladies are ready to be immortalised!"

Kehinde snorted at him and went back to cropping at the grass. It was shaping up to be a busy night, best to eat when you had the chance!
