... cool, quiet, serene...when the humans attacked.
Brandishing their long sticks and whips, upon strong steeds that galloped so hard they foamed at the mouth, the humans came upon us, rounding us up, cutting our escape routes.
I was young then, a fresh two year old, but with as much fury and energy as a ten year old. The herd stallion and the older colts rushed to defend us, buying us, the mares and fillies, time to escape.
The lead mare drove us all away, but I refused to budge.
How dare the humans rush upon us, disturbing our calm life? What have we done to spite them? What have we done to bring this upon us?
I seethed with rage at the humans' insensitivity. Watching my father and the fellow males, I had a yearning to join them. To bring justice to the humans who were trying to take our family away.
The lead mare neighed urgently at me to leave, but I turned and snapped, "How can we leave when our family is in danger? We have to help! We have to crush them beneath our hooves and get them away!"
The lead mare, with sixteen years worth of experience, turned to me.
"Amaya. Look at your father, your brothers, uncles, cousins. What are they fighting for?
Who are they fighting for?
Why are they fighting so hard?"
Seeing my confusion and impatience, she explained, "They are fighting for us. They are fighting to save us, not to defeat the humans."
She concluded with a simple yet deep sentence.
I joined the fight, as did many of the mares in the end. I fought with fervour and energy, but no longer solely to drive out the humans. But to protect my family.
Who knew, years pass quickly, and now it is my duty as a lead mare to protect the herd. You, my herd; from the youngest foal to the oldest stallion, remember these words: "A true warrior fights, not because he
hates what is in front of him; but because he
loves what is behind him."
Indeed, those were the very words that changed my perspective of the world, changed the way I see others, and changed my life.
