first crush story;
It started with a mindless message in the dirt.
Zyn had always liked taking strolls in the woods - ever since she was a little pup, she'd walk along the dirt trail, jumping in any puddles left behind by the last night's rain, and crunching the fallen autumn leaves, watching the squirrels scamper up the oak trees, scaring off any birds. It became a small tradition for her, just to have a small adventure to see what lay behind her home.
Today seemed like any other walk, the stream was still running, and she'd stop to enjoy watching the fish jump down the current, inadvertently making her think of dinner but, as she was walking down the trail, she saw saw something on the ground. Upon further inspection, it looked like a note written by another ryn. It was only a simple "hello?" scratched in the dirt. She looked around, hoping to see the ryn responsible for the note, but she saw nothing. Curiosity, as always, got the best of her, and she dug a simple "who are you?" into the ground. Looking around one last time, and finding nothing, she went back the way she came, a little more excited for the coming day's walk.
When she finally got a break, Zyn ran off into the woods, excitement made her run a bit faster, and the hope of seeing a new message made her smile so hard it hurt her cheeks.
The message wasn't exactly what she expected. "who are you?" was etched right below her question. hmph. two can play at this game. She wasn't going to let this get her, and she wrote a playful, "i asked first, you have to answer !" below. She looked around, once more, before leaving once again. Zyn was determined to find the face behind the messages.
This messaging system went back and forth through the months - Zyn coming out to the forest the first chance she got, reading over the note left behind the night before from her mystery ryn pen pal. They'd been writing through the winter, and it was almost the end of the spring. Sure, Zyn thought, writing was all nice and well, but she wished she could see the face behind the words. The notes left behind never were much of a read, a few quick sentences about their day at the most, but Zyn found it endearing, you could say the ryn had wormed their way into Zyn's heart, but she wished for nothing more than to see their face, to actually have a conversation with them. She wouldn't admit it out loud, but she would have day dreams of their first meeting, and what they'd look like. Blue fur with gray accents ? Pink fur ? Brown eyes - ah, there she goes again.
Tonight was her big plan, though. She wrote her standard note, going over her day, what happened over in her pack, how she almost lost one of her earrings in the river, the usual. She left the note, per usual, but instead of journeying back, she climbed the nearest tree and waited. Considering the replies always appeared before she came, the ryn must write their replies at night. So, she hung her legs off the branches of the oak, and waited for the sun to fall.
As her eyes began to drift off, she heard a small shuffle. Zyn scrunched up near the tree's trunk, hiding herself among the shadows, trying to see the ryn as they scratched a reply. Zyn couldn't make out much in the darkness - but she was still blown away. To an outsider, the ryn looked terribly average, just a simple light lavender coat with yellow flames, but they were perfect in Zyn's eyes. Their nervous look around made her heart melt, and the way their ears flopped down, almost covering their eyes was too cute for Zyn to handle. They started to scratch their letter into the dirt after reading Zyn's - smirking at the earring catastrophe, before starting to write their reply. In an effort to get a closer look, Zyn leaned forward to see past the leaves - a mistake on her part, as the leaves brushed together, causing the mystery ryn to catch her eyes. Zyn froze.
One could say it was love at first sight.
