Rescued from the event.
For socrates.you have my sincerest apologies for this god-awful backstory, once again."This young boy, just three years of age, came from an owner that planned to train him for showjumping, though each time they would get near a jump, he would either try to throw his rider, bolt, refuse to follow orders, or all of the above. The owner, seeing no use to a horse that wouldn't jump, decided to sell him to any haphazard auction house that would take him. Weary of much, this colt seems to fear anything and everything, from the squeak of an old stall door to the sound of a bucket being carelessly dropped. The workers often have to be careful with him, moving very slowly and always staying where he can see them when handling him to prevent him from spooking and possibly injuring himself. Options to ease this anxious boy's fears should be discussed with an equine behavioral specialist, and it would be best to avoid riding him until his fears of everyday things, such as jumps and buckets, things that he could and likely will see every day."

The unusual horse had arrived at the yard earlier today. He had been sedated to allow him to travel without hurting himself as he'd came with a note saying he was extremely spooky and sensitive. We'd decided to put him in a small grass pasture to save him the stress of the stall as he'd been in a dingy stall not even fit for a pig and was - according to the note - very afraid of them now. As we'd became more aware of the sedative wearing off because the stallion seemed more aware of where he was, we noticed that he was very weary of his surroundings. He stood there, dumbfound for a second before taking off in a ball of terror. He hurtled around the pasture for a bit before wearing himself out. The stallions blood red coat was now a shade darker with sweat and his eyes rolled to reveal the whites.
---
After a few days of getting the stallion to approach the bucket of hard feed he now finally associated it with something good instead of spooking at it. A few of these days were also spent by hanging off one of the fences of the pasture hoping he'd come over to me. He was interested who I was but fear always conquered all and he'd inevitably gallop away after a few minutes of me gazing at him. The nervousness was apparent and it was terrifying to know that he was literally abused into this.
----
I stood with the feed bucket in my hand. I'd decided that I would stand with the bucket in my hand to see if he'd approach. The blood bay pricked his ears at the sight of the familiar black bucket but his ears quickly swiveled in confusion to as why I hadn't set the bucket down and left the pasture. He stood there, glaring at me. Slightly cowering but also slightly angry. He wanted his food. He snorted at me in warning. He then decided to move closer and took three tentative steps towards me before losing his confidence and bolting. I set the food down before I stressed him out further.
----
Over the past few days, I'd stood for a bit with the bucket in my hand and the stallion had gained enough confidence to actually come over to me and eat from the bucket. It'd taken a lot of time and frustration for a seemingly easy task. A few times I'd doubted myself and wondered if I was actually getting somewhere. I'd never owned one of these horses before and they were a lot more instinctive than your average horse but finally, the red stallion was almost eating out of my hand. I shakily took one hand off the bucket and the horse carefully gazed at me and flicked his ears around a bit. I reach out and touch the stallion's face. He jumps back a bit and stares at me, snorting. Then, he lowers his head and goes back to eating and I stroke his face once more. Finally!
---
The stallion has associated me with his feed coming. He welcomes me with a quiet whinny. I've decided to call him Mars. He'll let me touch his face and I've been working down his body. I place his feed on the floor and I run my hand though his black mane. It's dirty, scruffy and unkempt. Understandably. He keeps a steady eye on me. I feel him tense up as I run my hands over his body. I can tell he's scared. He's starting to sweat but eventually he sighs. He's decided I'm not going to hurt him but I feel proud. He didn't just decide to bolt, he's decided he can trust me.
