prince edmund used to train under the wing of both his parents, the king and queen. his training for future kingship was still in the process when he was left behind supposedly for a few weeks as his parents went off on a business trip overseas with another kingdom. however, his parents never made it back. therefore, edmund was left with no choice but to run the kingdom on his own―and still merely a prince. his royal advisers tried their best to guide him, but nothing seemed to be working as his years of training somehow went straight out the window as he became more and more irresponsible and uncaring due to too much stress and pressure set upon his shoulders. the people of his kingdom worried and many gathered at the castle to pitch their suggestions as ways to help their poor ruler. although the kingdom suffered for a bit with nothing happening as edmund did not know exactly what to do, the people and the royal advisers finally did brew up a plan to fix things by reinstating issued trades with other kingdoms and the new imports of goods and services helped the kingdom flourish while the entire kingdom collectively sought out help for the prince together. kings, queens, princesses, and another princes of all sorts were brought in―sometimes by the goodness of their own hearts when they heard of prince edmund's troubles while others only came bribed by the promise of good pay. although this did help a considerable amount, it was clear that edmund was still not fit to be a king and would quite possibly forever remain a prince of a kingdom in an everlasting state of struggle.

due to this, prince edmund's kingdom was often targeted with attacks and ambushes due to enemies knowing of its weakness. but, this was ironically an asset to the prophecy regarding edmund which had been revealed long ago . . .

after a particularly lethal ambush in which the majority of the kingdom was burned down, prince edmund foolishly flees from the scene and ends up collapsing into the center of a grove of trees. once awakened, he finds himself in the care of a traveling archaeologist studying runes who helps him comprehend his prophecy which is as follows:

When the mighty two have left and gone
When the mighty kingdom has foregone
Will it only then be that the diamond in the rough
Will it only then be that two new is enough
To mend the broken bond of long ago
To mend what once was lost and regrow

(the full story of what happens with the archaeologist can be found here)
note: although it's recommended to read the story to better understand the prophecy, it's unnecessary for what follows, so feel free to skip it and continue reading if you'd like

[ start here again after reading the story ] when within the cave of inspiration, which the archaeologist instructed edmund to enter, he finds that he's suddenly been given the inspirational idea to go to the wood for answers. hence, a new adventure for prince edmund begins as he regains his strength and his sense of responsibility returns. he must continue his quest to bond his diamond stone piece with his crown in order to fulfill the prophecy and restore his kingdom to its previous glory!

although what he is yet to discover is that one shouldn't take prophecies quite literally . . .
the diamond stone piece
the crown
these are someones not somethings

[ to be continued ]
note: the nature of prince edmund's story is still ongoing and develops along the way as he forms new relationships and such

Name:
Prince Edmund "fortunate protector"

Gender:
Male

Why does this kalon look sad?: [ 500 / 500 words ]
The king waited anxiously by the room as words were whispered to him hurriedly just as another came from the door and informed him of the queen. The Whisperer had vanished and the king no longer heard the rest of its tellings. Instead he heard of the news of his newborn son, the future heir to the throne. The king was delighted in the news of a baby boy, however, when he entered the room to witness the good news, the queen’s face was grave as she cradled the new prince swaddled in soft blankets. The prophecy. The prophecy the Whisperer had warned the king of. It wasn’t just a fantasy, it was reality. The king and queen gazed down at the image of a cracked crown embedded into the depths of their dear little Edmund’s shine. It was dim and shadowy, but glistened all the same with great intensity, something that could not be missed. But, this could not be worried about presently. The queen’s countenance softened and she began to sing a lullaby as the king caressed little prince Edmund’s sniffling tufty fur with peals of dread thundering within his heart . . .

Prince Edmund stared blankly at the painting hanging high above his head at the center of the ballroom’s main wall. It seemed that the paint was melding with the marble of the wall as his vision blurred and tears ruptured his gaze upon his parents’ portrait. They left him. Both of them at the same time. Why did that ship have to sink on them? Of all the ships, the ship they were aboard when sailing to a neighboring kingdom to trade with, was the one which had sunk by means of a thunderous storm. Split the ship in half they said. Lightning bolted through its sails and cracked its wood. No one survived.

The echo of the prophecy reverberated within Edmund’s mind as he remembered the words, or rather the warnings, of the Whisperer. He knew the Whisperer had once appeared to his parents before as well, but he had only heard of the prophecy after his parents had gone . . .

When the mighty two have left and gone
When the mighty kingdom has foregone
Will it only then be that the diamond in the rough
Will it only then be that two new is enough
To mend the broken bond of long ago
To mend what once was lost and regrow

He still could not comprehend it . . .
But, before he could so much as blink, he jerked backwards as a firm paw grappled at his shoulder and words were spewed into his ear, “Your highness! The kingdom! There has been a fire! Someone has ambushed us! The entire kingdom is in flames!

Feeling like a coward as terror clouded his eyes, the horrified prince pushed past the gathered guards and fled from the castle, leaping past the blazing fire and raging onward until he had fully departed.

The Prophecy: [ 500 / 500 words ]
Prince Edmund skirted the underbrush as fresh tears stained his tussled fur and his purple cheeks reddened while he trembled. The tall, lanky trees surrounding him only made his head spin even more and soon he collapsed at the grove, dizzy from his anger of his foolishness and ignoble moment of flight . . .

"Are you alright?"
Edmund tried to focus his vision as he struggled to sit up, "Where am I? Who are you?"
"You are safe with me. My name is Briar and I'm a traveling archaeologist. But, what are you doing out here . . . ? Are you Prince Edmund? Of the burnt kingdom?"
The prince silently stared at Briar with unblinking weary eyes and she noticed the stale tears across his face.
"I-I can help you—"
"I've failed to fulfill the prophecy meant to save my kingdom. I do not deserve help."

But, Briar was already shuffling through a brown canvas bag lying nearby and all Edmund could do was watch her helplessly. Soon enough, she heaved out a rather thick book with a gleaming purple diamond engraved on the cover. Edmund's eyes widened.

"Th-That . . . it appears the same as the diamond set in my cloak . . ."
Briar did did not look up as she quickly leafed through the pages, "What is the prophecy?"
When Edmund had explained it to her, her face lit up, "That's it! The mighty two who have gone are your parents and the the mighty kingdom forgone is your kingdom! You're on the right path!"
"But, that can't be . . . what about the 'two new'?"
"Maybe you need help to restore your kingdom! Maybe I'm the one supposed to help you—"
"So, then that must mean that the 'diamond in the rough' is this purple diamond!"
"Yes! Exactly! Now take a look at this . . ."

Then without need for words, both dipped their heads as they read through the ancient archeological book. Soon, it was deciphered to be that they must mend Edmund's cracked crown with the diamond in order to bring about the regrow of his kingdom. However, neither knew how to do so.

"What are we supposed to do? Try to force the diamond piece into your crown?" Briar inquired as Edmund carefully removed it from his cloak, "I don't believe it's that simple. Nothing as ancient a prophecy like this is that simple."
The prince looked up in irritation, "Then what do you suggest we do?"
It was then that Briar came across an inscription in the book, "Wait . . . it says here that you must be within the cave which rests beside the Pierian Spring when you bond your crown and the diamond."
"The Pierian Spring?"
She directed him to a page of the book, "It's very important to the Muses of Chicken Smoothie and it provides inspiration to anyone who drinks from it. It says here that the cave by its bank does the same only if the one present within it is fulfilling a prophecy. It means you."
"Me . . ."
