Story/Art: The mare was led off of the boat with a blindfold over her eyes. The air was cold, and it was quite dark as her handler lead her through the dimly lit streets. Her nostrils flared as she took in the unfamiliar, crisp scent of snow. She didn't know what it was at the time, but it fascinated her nonetheless. She dipped her head to sniff and try to lick at the stuff while she was slowly walked to her temporary home, but was never quite able to touch it.
The blindfold was removed from her face as she was put into a warm stall filled with honey toned light. Luhaal was left alone and turned, a sharp cold nipping at her rear from an open window that faced the pasture. Her eyes squinted as she stuck her head out to view the white, slightly sparkling landscape. The same crisp smell from before surrounded her, along with something new, something sharp and fresh and sweet. It smelled delicious. She looked around for the source, eventually pinpointing it. Two of the stable grooms were carrying a large, spiky looking plant across the pasture on their shoulders. It passed by her face on the way to wherever its destination was, and she reached out to take a bite.
The taste was terrible! She recoiled and spat the sharp little pieces out in an effort to get rid of the flavor, but the sap remained. It took several minutes of licking various things in her stall and flinging her head around with her tongue out to resolve the issue, but eventually it worked out. She took a mouthful of the sparkling white stuff on the windowsill, only to be shocked when it melted into the coldest water she'd ever swallowed. The snow cleared the very last bits of sap from her mouth and left her feeling quite refreshed. Finally done with her investigation and content in her new knowledge, the mare ate some of her available hay before settling down to rest for the night, lulled to sleep by the occasional jingle of bells and the rustle of nearby trees. extra:
Luhaal had been in the temporary barn for a few days, waiting for the roads to be ready for her journey to her actual home. The malik had been stall bound due to the snow for quite a while, but now, on Christmas day, she was lead outside and released into the pasture. Her hooves crunched softly in the fresh layer of snow that had blanketed the ground overnight and the small, contained landscape in the pasture gleamed under the early morning light. She spun around, kicking up a sparkling arc of little ice crystals that seemed to glow midair. The cold burned her lungs when she inhaled, and she darted about the edges of the pasture, stretching her legs out properly for the first time in quite a while. The mare reveled in the freedom and unfamiliar cold, crashing through a snowbank and spraying the sparkling ice absolutely everywhere. Of course, being desert born and bred, Luhaal couldn't stay out for all too long. After only an hour she was brought back in, soaked with melted snow and shivering ever so slightly. She was dried and returned to her stall, warm mash waiting to help her heat back up. [200 words. exactly.]
