She's not good when approached from directly in front or any angle behind, causing her to lash out with her front or back legs respectively. Retrieval - 400 words

Postby OutdatedBoombox » Tue Oct 25, 2016 10:24 am

Taline ruffled her short, silver dyed hair as she drove out to a midway point to pick up a newly discovered mare. As the designated owner of the entire DSR property, and the manager of the main Denali branch she would be picking the girl up personally. Her grip on the wheel shifted as the truck crunched over some rough patches, the campsite where the mare was being kept had always been a pain to get to, but Tali was so used to the journey by now that every little bump was familiar.

She parked not far outside of the encampment, getting her trailer prepped before actually going in to meet and speak with those who were working on rounding up the ponies in the Brooks Range area. The exchange was brief, ending with her showing the retrieval papers to them and being pointed towards the mare. She hitched the rope held in the crook of her arm up to her shoulder as she took a look at the temporary round pen where the obviously nervous beast resided. Every motion the sabino made was jittery, her pink nostrils flaring the moment she picked up Tali's unfamiliar scent. The woman spoke softly, keeping her tone slow and calm to give the gal some time to calm down before she caught the rope around her neck. The moment the loop tightened, the mare began to snort and squeal, pulling and yanking at the tether. She lashed out with a hind leg at the fence when her rump brushed it, leading to a brief stumble. Tali merely watched, letting the rope slide through her hands til the pony had calmed down a bit.

Still speaking soothingly, she tugged the mare slowly along from a distance to the trailer. The pair took a good two hours of slow finicking with breaks in between to get the girl into the large trailer without too much panic. Tali slipped the rope from around her neck through one of the windows after shutting the doors, doing her best to make sure the feral pony didn't notice too much. As she walked back up to the truck, the sabino began to snort loudly, bumping into some of the padded edges and skittering around in fear. Tali waited until Pama, the elder mare brought along to comfort the youngster had worked her magic before beginning the long drive home.

Onsite Vet Check - 397 words

Postby OutdatedBoombox » Tue Oct 25, 2016 10:25 am

After the drive home and 24 hours of settling the sabino in, Taline had the onsite vet come out to help her observe the mare and go over a check up. The young woman had christened the mare 'Brooke' after her former home and some consideration, but she still didn't respond to the name. Both Tali and the vet spent an hour or so just observing the mare, debating on if sedation would be necessary to calm her enough for a physical exam and blood drawing. At the vet's word, Tali went and got the tranquilizer gun. The item was often used, much to her dismay, but it helped with interacting with the very feral animals that resided in the reserve. The dart hit Brooke and the rump, resulting in the mare bolting around and even bucking a bit before the sedative set in. Once she was sufficiently drowsy, Tali approached and haltered the mare, holding the pre-attached lead rope firmly while the vet started the exam.

The dun mare noticed the procedure just enough to figure out what was happening, but not enough to start attempting to escape. She shifted her hooves and was rather difficult when it came to picking them up, but she lifted without too much fuss. Legs were felt, blood was drawn, and tests were sent off to make sure she was 100% clean of any diseases that could effect the others on the reserve. The mare had her teeth checked and she was discovered to be only two and a half in age, meaning that there could be some hope for training her. Tali found the only concern to be her eyes. The sabino had rather poor vision and was likely born that way, which could effect her ability to be properly released out onto the grounds. Genetic testing would show if the vision issues would be passed on into whatever foals she'd produce.

After the vet was dismissed, it took a week or so to get all of the test results back. The manager found that while Brooke was free of ant diseases, her vision problems did have a possibility of being passed on. This would be a bit of an issue when it came to truly releasing her, leading to the decision that the mare would be kept in a smaller roaming area with the two breed ambassador mares.

Area introductions - 250 words

Postby OutdatedBoombox » Tue Oct 25, 2016 10:26 am

For her first few weeks at DSR, Brooke had been kept alone in a large pasture for both quarantine and acclimation to the new terrain. Tali had done very little to get the mare used to anything other than contact, only coming by and watching or luring the little lady over with interesting new foods to try. Everything was going quite smoothly, much to Taline's happiness. The mare still wasn't used to the halter, but had become accustomed to a long, soft rope that gently tugged her about every now and then when looped around her neck. Tali would be happy enough with that, figuring that the mare wouldn't need too much interaction when being kept so close to the main building.

Of course, it would be time soon for Brooke to be moved through to a communal enclosed area for the remainder of her life on the reserve. This was achieved using a mix of herding skill and channels created with pieces of metal gates that were kept around purely for the purpose of directing the reserve residents into certain areas. Brooke was run through without too much of an issue, though the mare was left quite obviously agitated. She immediately dashed away into a slightly wooded area, hiding from the view of the people who had her moved. The sabino would have plenty of time to calm and explore, getting used to the scents and terrain of the reserve where she would spend the rest of her life.

The release - 342 words

Postby OutdatedBoombox » Tue Oct 25, 2016 10:26 am

After some time of watching the way Brooke behaved in the ambassador area, Taline took a deep breath and decided the mare would be released onto the open reserve. Her vision didn't appear to actually hinder her ability to travel or notice threats, which was the main concern Tali had with releasing her properly. The mare was accustomed to hearing people now and no longer acts too skittish when humans are in the vicinity. She seems to show a bit more curiosity than perviously, approaching a short distance without actually needing food to be attracted. The sabino still needed sedation to be touched, as everyone found out when she got bitten by Phantom and needed to have the small wound treated. After sedation the entire thing had gone smoothly.

Taline got Phantom ready to have Brooke brought out onto the main reserve, putting on a bridle so she could have a bit of control but forgoing the remaining tack. She climbed up onto the fuzzy grey's back with minimal effort and brought rode her into the dun's vicinity, disrupting the other's bark eating with a quick, clean roping. Brooke squealed for a little bit, prancing at the end of the rope before recovering from the surprise. Taline lead her out, having Phantom show the way through the reserve for several miles. The woman hoped that they would be able to run across one of the herds that roamed through the wilderness, as getting her accepted into one would give the sabino the best chance at survival. They stayed out for hours, Tali bundling herself deep in her parka and urging Phantom further and further out. The moment Taline saw a herd, she got the rope off of Brooke's neck, leaving her to dash away towards the other ponies. She and Phantom waited anxiously, watching the mare interact with the lead mare and stallion of the herd. After 30 minutes of tense anticipation, Tali was able to start the freezing, long ride back knowing that Brooke would be safe in her new herd.
