A Likely Future:
Since that horrid day had passed, Demit seemed to grow more and more unlike herself. She barely slept or ate and it was all her tribe mates could do to make her sit down and not over burden herself with tasks. She refused to take a break, to sit down and let her mind wander for it would always wonder back to him. To her protector and best friend. Her stomach twisted into knots as she thought about Minzi, but unlike others thought it was not for the simple fact that he was dead.
She hadn't had any visions since his death.
Since Demit had begged and pleaded with her aunt to take care of him once he was in the after life, she hadn't had any visions or dreams. Not once had her aunt nor any of their ancestors come to her and she was vividly afraid that he wasn't there, he wasn't okay, and that she had messed up and angered them, so even if he was there they wouldn't let her know out of spite.
Minzi was more to her than just a pet or a protector. He was her loyal, by her side always best friend. While she was friendly and caring for all her tribe, she never took the time to get to know any of the kids there as she grew up to make really close friends, they were all either family or good acquaintances. Then, there was Minzi.
He was with her every day, always giving her company and warning her of danger in case she didn't pay attention. As crazy as it would sound to some, he was also her comfort. He was there the day she first lost a patient--her father. She held her dad's hand as he slowly left them and prayed softly over him. Then she cried and cried and couldn't stob, sobbing into Minzi's fur as the canine nuzzled against Demit's side and whined, almost like he was mourning with her. It was as her luck would have it that Minzi's accident happened not to long after.
Minzi held a special place in Demit's heart and it was breaking at not knowing if his spirit had passed peacefully. Had she done something wrong? Was it because she couldn't save her father or him? Or that she sat there and did nothing while his life drained out? That night, as much as she tried to stay awake, she all but passed out as she drifted off into a soft sleep. This was different than normal as of late, as she'd be plagued by nightmares, but not tonight.
She stood in a field of the brownish tan grass that surrounded her home. Demit was confused until she looked around and saw faintly in the distance her aunt Zo sitting calmly in the grass while some animal playfully ran around her. Confused beyond belief, Demit tried calling to her, but to no avail. It didn't matter how loud she shouted or how close she got,she didn't hear the calls. As she walked closer, her heart skipped a beat at seeing who the animal that so happily played around Zo was.
Minzi.
He was okay. Her friend had passed on just fine, and he was well and happy here. She felt happy tears prick her eyes and jumped as she heard a voice overhead. Despite her aunt not looking at her and overall seeming to not notice she was there, Demit heard her voice, clear as day. "Fret no longer, dear Demitris. Your beloved companion is safe and happy, you've done nothing wrong."
As she dropped to her knee's slowly, Demit couldn't stop the tears that rolled down her cheeks. She covered her mouth with a hand and stared wide eyed at the canine that was so happily running around. They were not tears of sadness, but rather tears or unimaginable joy. Minzi was gone, taken from her and she would miss him until her last days. But he was here, safe with her aunt in the afterlife and so very happy. Even though he couldn't be with her down on plain ol' Earth anymore, she knew he was happy here, and he still could keep an eye on her. And that's all she ever wanted for the companion she held so close to her heart. For him to be happy, and he was.
Minzi was happy, even if it was in the afterlife.
