interaction between them and you/oc/rpw:Lola was getting ready to go to the party, mumbling under her breath as she threw things into a duffel bag. "I can't believe my old roommate Azlyn couldn't make this social event. I don't even know who's party it is!" She sighed in frustration, zipping the bag up and placing it by the door. "Well, at least there'll be cake. And I don't have to stay for the whole party...I can just stay for a few minutes. I'll have to write Azzy and tell her how it went." Suddenly realizing something, she smacked a paw to her forehead. "Oh, no! I forgot - I'll have to tell whoever it is that's having the party that Azlyn can't make it because she got a new job on Caspian's ship! Oh, how will I explain it to the RPW without hurting her feelings?" Lola shook her head, upset. She breathed in and sighed heavily, clearing her mind. "All right. I'll just tell her in as few words as possible." She patted her two baby lambs on the head, kissed them both, and said goodbye. "Don't worry - I'll be home soon, Linus. And don't you fret, Lucy - I'll be coming back, I promise." Lola smiled at them one last time, and then turned her attention to the front door. She grabbed the duffel bag, filled with two presents, the invitation, her medication, her flute, and an emergency aid kit. She slung it over her small shoulders, grabbed the key and hung it around her neck, and then set out, locking her door behind her. She lost herself in thought as she trotted off of the asphalt and onto the dirt path, snaking its way to the party.
I miss Azzy. I'm so happy that she found her place, finally - she found a job where she could cook and enjoy life to its fullest. I couldn't be happier for her. But...but...I still miss her. She was the only roommate I'd ever had. And, with my parents unable to take any of their children back into their own small house, I'm sort of stuck on my own. I mean, yeah, I have enough money to pay for everything - finances aren't a problem. It's just the loneliness that bothers me.A shadow passed overhead.
She glanced up, and shrieked in surprise. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
A tiny RPW floated down and landed next to her, balloons still tied around its waist. It bounced because of the helium, and trotted alongside Lola. "Hello. Is this the way to the party?"
Lola swallowed, relaxing. She'd thought at first it was someone out to get her! But the pup clearly meant her no harm. "Yes, yes. You can follow me if you'd like."
"Cool. Thanks, Missus..."
"It's Lola. And I'm not married."
"Thanks, Miss Lola. I'm Charsian."
She looked over at the pup. "Where's your gift for the girl?"
"Oh, I have Lay's gift right here! It's the balloons."
Lola smiled. She liked the youngster. "How old are you, Charsian?"
"I'm ten."
Lola's smile turned to a frown. "Where are your parents? Did they really allow you to go to a party alone?"
"You look pretty young yourself, you know."
Lola looked down at the ground, blushing. "I'm a PPS. I stopped growing at the age of sixteen."
"How old are you?"
"I'm nineteen now. My mind has matured a bit, but I still feel as if I have much to learn. My body, however, is stuck forever in this tiny state."
"That's okay," Charsian said with a smile and flick of his tail. "It's more fun being small, anyway. I don't wanna get big."
Lola frowned. "Why not? I think getting big would be great! Others wouldn't think of you as stupid because of your size."
"Well, if they think that, they're stupidheads, and you shouldn't listen to them. Miss Lola, I think you're amazing."
Lola blushed again. "Thank you. You're not so bad yourself, Charsian."
They walked in silence for awhile, until Charsian looked over at Lola. "You're going to the party alone?"
"Yeah. My friend was supposed to go, but she moved away and wanted me to go in her place." Lola suddenly realized something, and glanced over at Charsian. "Where are your parents, by the way? You never answered me."
Charsian looked down at the dirt scuffed up by his paws. "I don't know."
Lola frowned. "Are they lost?"
"No...I just don't know where they went."
Lola's frown deepened. "What do you mean by that, Charsian?"
Charsian wouldn't look at her. "My parents dropped me off in this cave when I was really little. I don't really remember what they looked like, because it was so long ago. They dropped me off, said they'd be back in a few months, and...they never returned. I've lived in that cave for awhile now."
"Where is it?" Lola asked, glancing around and trying to spot it.
"It's behind us, over that big hill."
Lola looked back, and her mouth dropped open. "You live on the other side of the mountain?!"
"Oh, that's a mountain? It's so small, I thought it was a hill."
Lola blinked in confusion. "Yes, Charsian, that is most definitely a mountain. It's not really that small, actually..."
"Oh, well, outside the opening of the cave there's a very large mountain that's bigger than that one, so...I always thought it was just a large hill."
Lola shook her head, and stared down at the dirt. "How do you get food and water?"
"I, um...I ask others for it. I fly into town using my balloons and then ask if anyone can pay for me. Some of the RPWs are really nice and they help me pay for breakfast and dinner...but for lunch, I'm on my own. Sometimes...sometimes I steal a crescent from a bakery, just so I can eat. For water, there's a stream that runs near the cave, so I always have fresh water, at least."
"How do you get the balloons?"
"My parents left me a helium tank and a big box of balloons to blow up, should I need something to entertain me. Really, they've been the only way I can get from place to place, so...yeah."
"How many more do you have left?"
"Enough for a few more trips. After that, I'll just have to walk, I guess."
Lola frowned in concern. "Making a trip over the mountain is very difficult, Charsian. In the air it is easy - but walking can exhaust you in seconds if you're not well-trained."
"Oh." He looked down at the ground, a sullen look coming over his face.
Lola had an idea. "Say, why don't you come over to my place and stay there for awhile?"
Charsian frowned. "No, I don't wanna be rude to you, Miss Lola."
"I'm inviting you, so you're not being rude."
Charsian swallowed nervously. "It's just that...oh, well...uh...I just..."
Lola stopped walking and looked over at him. "What's wrong?"
"I really like you, and I think you'd be a great RPW to bunk with...but I'd feel bad mooching off of you."
"You wouldn't be doing that if I adopted you."
Charsian's eyes widened, and his head jerked up so fast that Lola was worried he'd get whiplash. "Are you serious?"
Lola nodded with a smile.
"But...but...but...You just met me! How do you know you want to adopt me if you just met me?"
Lola leaned her head against his. "I know because you're a great pup, and I'm a good judge of character."
Charsian smiled with tears in his eyes. "You really mean it?"
"Of course. I wouldn't lie about this."
Charsian happily walked beside Lola all the way to the party. When they arrived, they dropped their gifts off at the table and stuck by each other's sides as they meandered through the crowds.
"I don't like this," Charsian said unhappily.
"I'm not a fan of crowds, either," Lola muttered back.
Charsian suddenly cheered up. "There's Lay! I wanna go wish her a happy birthday!"
"Okay, I'll go with you," Lola said quietly.
They were almost to the RPW who was chatting with a group of her friends when a rather large, dark RPW stepped in front of them and refused to move. "What are two little kids doing at Lay's birthday party? Don't tell me your mommy and daddy were invited, and drug you along!"
Lola frowned.
Charsian ducked behind her, whimpering.
"Aw, the widdle puppy-wuppy is so scardy-wardey." He laughed.
Lola's frown deepened.
"And lookie there, he's not even old enough to eat cake yet! Aw, your poor mudder and fadder are so wooorried about yooooou."
Lola had had enough. She stepped forward and glared at the RPW. "Move."
"Oh, so now you're ordering me around?"
"Get out of the way. We want to see Lay and wish her a happy birthday, unlike the wall that stands in front of us."
He looked hurt. "Aw, c'mon now, there's no need to be a spoil-sport."
"There's no need to be a bully, either."
His eyes narrowed. "Who you callin' a bully?"
"I'm looking at him."
"Listen here, you namby-pamby - "
"No," Lola interrupted. "YOU listen to ME, you brick wall of hate and anger. You can call me names all you want to - I don't care. I don't care if you think I'm weird or crazy or whatever adjective you'd like to use. But you DO NOT call my little buddy those things. He hasn't done anything to deserve that. And if you call him one more name, I will hurt you so badly you won't be able to hear in the morning," she threatened, slowly slipping the bag off of her shoulders and zipping it open. She reached around in there until she found what she was looking for.
He stepped forward. "Let's just see what a small-fry like you can do to me, puny little wolf."
She yanked out her flute, leapt atop his shoulders, and stuck it directly into his ear. She played a shrill note.
He yelped in pain and leapt back, startled.
She stopped, jumped down, put the flute away, and yelled at him, "THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR BEING A BULLY!"
He raced off, holding his ear in pain.
Lola smiled, trotting forward to greet Lay.
Charsian crept forward after her, never leaving her side.
Lay smiled at them both. "Welcome to the party! Thanks for taking care of Brik. He's a ridiculous RPW that my mother always invites because she and his father get along well." She shook her head in disgust. "If I had it my way, he'd never get past the front gate. Thanks for dealing with him - he deserved everything."
Lola smiled.
Charsian slowly relaxed.
"Thank you both for coming to my party! May I see your invitations?"
Lola handed over hers first. "Azlyn couldn't come - she got a new job with Caspian on his boat, so she sent me instead. My name is Lola."
"Well, any friend of Azzy's is a friend of mine," Lay said with a smile. She turned to the pup. "May I see your invitation?"
Charsian pulled the letter out of the thick fur on his neck. "My parents were friends of yours, I suppose."
Lay looked at the invitation and frowned. "This is several years old. Why have I never seen you here?"
"My parents left me somewhere, and I didn't know how to find this place on my own. Miss Lola helped me get here today."
Lay smiled at Lola. "Thank you for helping the pup. I'd love to see you both next year as well. Be sure to bring your own plate - we'll be having a potluck!"
Lola smiled.
Charsian woofed happily.
"Happy birthday, Lay!" they both said in unison.
