tasks;;
Task 1 - Welcoming your new dog home - Complete
The moment I woke up there was adrenaline pumping through my veins. I was extremely excited for the day because I was going to meet my new rescue dog. Quickly I got dressed and checked in the mirror to make sure I was ready. I rushed downstairs and quickly took a bite of a granola bar before heading to my car. I double checked for the crate in the trunk before pulling out of my driveway. I was excited the whole trip and couldn't help but think about what my dog would look like and how they would act. I sampled into a shabby little building, and many barks erupted as I opened the door. The clerk smiled and I walked up to the front desk. She had of me the form which I carefully filled out. I didn't took a seat next to many other people who seem to be equally awaiting their new arrivals. As I waited I saw a countless dogs coming out, some were just skin and bones,some where growling,and most had their tails tucked tightly. The weight seemed endless so when they called my name I jumped up, eager to find my new dog. I walked briskly to the gate and the volunteers ushered me inside. Buy a young girl side was a large crate and I crouched down to look inside. Beautiful green eyes looked at me and I could make out a once lush coat. He didn't seem aggressive so I poked a finger inside. Tentatively, he licked my fingers and I could see his tail barely wagging. As I opened the crate and I took my red leather leash and clipped it onto his old collar, before walking him out to my car. I could tell he was a very sweet dog although he is definitely very skittish. I knew with training in time he would make an excellent team dog. Throughout the car ride I thought of a possible names. By the time I got home I had come up with the brilliant name of Heart of Gold. I decided to wait to come up with a call name because I really wanted a name that would fully suit him. I was welcomed home by the barks of all my dogs, and walked my rescue over to the entrance. To my surprise, he pulled to go over to them. He had clearly been socialized, and was probably just surrendered by a owner who couldn't keep up with the energetic nature of the dogs. The thought infuriated me, and I squeezed the handle of the leash. My dog shot around, sniffing and lunging everywhere. I laughed. He had such a care-free attitude, opposite of my last rescue, who was extremely aggressive. I had finallY thought of a name that fit him. Sam; it was a friendly simple name that fit this boy exactly. I called his name, and as i expected, he didn't take notice. We finally made it over to his pen, and he darted off as soon as I unclipped his collar. He explored every crevice, and for a while, I watched him happily.
Task 2 - Bonding - Complete
I quickly dashed out of bed, and grabbed a bite of cereal. The sun had just come out and I rushed to Sam's kennel. I opened the gate, and Sam cantered over. He covered my face in kisses, and I grinned. His fur was matted and stuck out in tufts. Also, he was incredibly skinny. I stroked him, and lay by his side. I hooked him onto a leash, and brought him to the grooming shed. Other dogs of mine barked and ran around happily. Sam whined and pulled towards him. I shook a finger at him playfully, and walked him over to the bath. He froze as the water splashed around him, and I laughed. I took him out , and blow dryer him. He was such a ball of fluff, and I took a picture of him. I then took a furminator brush and brushed him. Soon, the whole floor was covered in tan colored fur. When we finished, he seemed much sleeker, and Sam bounced around and barked excitedly. I took him back to his pen, and he ran around in big circles. I grabbed a bowl, and ran to my kitchen. To help Sam gain weight, and I prepared a dish with fatty chicken, vegetables, and grains of all-natural rice. When i brought it back to him, he eagerly chomped down. For the rest of the day, I stroked Sam. I thought about all the things we would accomplish. By the end of the day, I was extremely tired, and fell fast asleep.
Task 3 - Gaining Confidence - Incomplete/Complete
After many days of constant bonding with Sam, I officially thought that he was ready to begin his training. Of course, before I did that, we would need to get him used to the gear and other dogs. First, I hauled out the gear, including the
collars, harnesses, and the gang-line. I had tried to bring out the sled, but after a few minutes, I gave up , huffing and puffing. He cautiously sniffed at the nylon material, and rolled in it soon after. I laughed, and crouched down, cuddling him. His condition had improved so much thee last few days, and now, his ribs were barely visible. I picked up the newest harness, an olive green, which would soon be his, and wiggled it in the air. He darted back and tucked his tail, but soon popped back up, and eagerly sniffed the wiggling gear. I was glad that the moving fabric didn't effect him. I rewarded him with a small treat, and he gobbled it up in no time. Next, I would socialize him with the rest of my dogs. I walked him to the other dog's pens, and they eagerly rushed up to sniff noses. Sam crouched low as the two females, Sorence and Willow rushed up to him. Their tails wagged wildly, and they scratched the chain fence excitedly. I then walked him over to my other rescue baby, Jasper. Jasper had been an aggressive insecure dog, but now was an extremely calm dog. Of course, he preferred to be top-dog, but Sam happily complied. Soon, they were playing through the fence with their tongues rolling out. Then, I gathered all the dogs, and herded them into a field of wavy grass. The four dogs loped around happily, and I saw my special-needs dog staring out the window, obviously envying the playing dogs. I smiled. In the course of one day, I managed to get Sam completely used to the gear and his teammates.
