#130 Keetin // Yours Truly

What are keetins?

To be read in a David Attenborough voice.
Keetins are small, agile mouse creatures that live within the trees of any forested climate in the world, and are closely related to the Twiglet species. They can't run very fast or fly, but they are terrific at leaping and climbing, despite their short limbs. These little guys tend to be tamed as companions and will often be seen riding their handler's shoulder, pockets or hiding in their hair. Keetins will never grow any larger than a squirrel, baby Keetins (called Kits) can be as small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. A Keetin's diet consists of their favourite food, Strawberries! However they are also seen eating other fruits and sometimes cakes.
A group of Keetins is called a Keetai (pronounced key-tie). They communicate through a series of small pips and mews.
When happy, a Keetin will release a scent from a gland inside it's ear, making it smell beautifully like strawberries.

His Personality: Oliver has always had his snout in a book and for many years in his early life let himself get pushed aside and walked on. When he first met Lyra, he started to look up from his books and notice his surroundings. The two began to spend time with each other and Oliver's personality opened up and grew. Currently, Oliver is a kind and playful Keetin, who likes to write poetry. He often quotes the books he is reading at that time, and will happily tell you all about them. He is protective of his friends and does his best to always be there for them. However, Oliver can sometimes miss important information. Hints dropped, body language and the such are often unseen.
Image
How They met: Oliver met Lyra at a young age, stuck in their small town with a very limited community. Once they met, the two were rarely apart, and Lyra's shyness helped Oliver become more outgoing. They shared everything and helped each other through life. They stayed friends throughout grade school, went to the same high school and spent vacations together.

His letters:
Lyra-
“And one by one the nights between our separated cities are joined to the night that unites us.”
― Pablo Neruda

The ride was bumpy, but uneventful. With so many bodies around me, it was hard to be cold. The Keetins here, mostly men, are a unique sorts, ranging from the brut looking for a fight to the boy trying to prove his worth. I received you letter while we were setting up the encampment, and was unable to read it until now. For you, I was only gone a minute, for me, it is now days. All of today was pitching tents and digging trenches, but you words made it feel worth the work to be able to strike a day off my time. As for here, it is scalding. Who knew only across the ocean it could be summer like while we were in winter? It's very quiet as well, almost makes me forget that anytime I may have to pick up a firearm. The only sounds are the heavy breathing of Keetins, and their hushed voices. At this time I am looking at the stars, trying to remember the constellations. I wonder if you are looking at the stars as well, if you can even see them in the city.
I've met my superiors, most are ruff men, but smart. I'm hoping they will know how to keep my unit safe and away from fighting.
I would right more, but we have more work to do and a fellow next to me is complaining that I am making to much noise. Who knew writing was so loud?

Thinking of you as I gaze at the stars,
Oliver.

My friend Lyra,

I am so glad you received my letter! The enemy has been targeting message carriers and I feared the one holding mine had been taken. Going to collage is a great choice, and a nurse! To learn to heal others, that is wonderful. I only wish I was with you, perhaps training to be a teacher. Like you said, I didn't really think about how much danger I am in until now. You see, our camp was raided. I do not want to scare you, nor myself at that, but I had a gun put to my head. Luckily, the same old fellow who told me to quiet down saved my life. I will come home, no need to worry. It's not like I'm going to be on the front lines, and I wont be doing anything reckless.
More on that, I think I may write a book. Not about the war, for, that would be a sad book indeed. I've been watching the flora and fauna of this place and I feel very inspired. And you letters fill me with so much joy! Yes, I will write a book.
The stars were covered by clouds tonight, but I know they are there, looking down at us both.

Your slightly air headed friend,
Oliver

Times passes, a few more letters.

Dear Lyra,
“Sometimes things become possible if we want them bad enough.”
― T.S. Eliot
Lyra! I know it's been so long since I saw you last, and I stopped writing for a while, but it is time! My term is up and the war is settling down! I guess I should tell you that my leg was ingured and I was in the hospital. They don't let us write letters there, all paper is used for dressing wounds. I wont be able to walk as well, but I have a crutch to help. I'm glad you are still where I left you, to think you had moved away, well, that would be very (scribble marks) sad. No more tears, just being reunited! I've been composing a letter to you besides this one while I was in the hospital, but I think I'll tell it to you when I get home, maybe after you tell me your wish? I'd ask how classes are, but by the time you got this I'd be only a day or so away. Think of you kept me from falling into the grudge of hospital life, and I will be renewed when I see you! (I also can't wait for a bath). Being away from you has also made me think deeper about things, which I will put in my letter to you when I get home.
(Scribble marks)
Departing soon,
Oliver

"Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation"
― Kahlil Gibran

Sitting in the hospital, thinking over what I wanted to say, I guess I didn't want to forget,(And maybe was just to shy to say this) so I'm writing this down on the boat. Then we can read it together. I've always loved you. It's that simple. Maybe when we were young it was different type of love, but I always have. Being in the war, it reminded me that I can't wait until a sign comes to show me how you feel, I just have to take a chance, because one day there may not be one. But now, there is time, right now, or at least when I give this to you. Lyra, I want to give my heart and soul to you. I want to protect you and care for you and be there for you. I wont know how you feel until this this boat reaches our town, but, even if you do not feel the same, please let me stay near you. As friends. It may be awkward, but I'll get over it. I'll hold back my feelings for you. I don't want to hurt you. For now, as I am running out of paper, I miss you Lyra, and can barely contain my excitement to see you.

Much love,
Oliver
