Suzzallo KennelsYou do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

How did you gain her trust?; A working process of gaining her trust was small whispers and treats when she came by. This showed her we weren't scary, and rather nice humans, then who she lived with before.

How did you gain her trust?; after we found her in an old abandoned farm with dangerous conditions and starving. it was a very long process that started with treats and love for her trust. She was a real "true" trust story. That is how she got her name. I couldn't touch her head, legs and neck at first but I slowly started moving to her soft places. Every time she didn't nip at me I would give her a treat. We couldn't get a halter on her so we had to use a rope. She finally got her fully trusting of people.

How I gained her trust:
After finding her alone, scared, and nervous it was a long hard road to gain her trust. I started out by simply being there with her. While she was in her stall I would sit outside of it and polish tack or boots, or some other task. I would let her out into the pasture and sit with my back to her, reading a book. I did this for a while before she was eventually comfortable being close to me, knowing I wouldn't try to force her into anything. The next step was getting her to let me touch her. I did this by continuing to sit with her, moving a bit closer every day. I even sat in her stall one time, and it was then that she seemed to finally decide to trust me a little. She let me touch her lightly, running my hand over her back and sides. She wouldn't let me touch her face, or her shoulders though. I gathered by her scars that she had likely been mistreated somehow. Within a week of her letting me touch her she let me groom her a bit, then came her hooves. She was still not letting me get near her face. It took a long time before she would wear any tack. I found that she loved baths and swimming, it seemed to be like therapy for her. So, I would try to put some blankets over her back to get her used to the weight, then I would bathe her or let her swim in the pond for a bit. Eventually she accepted blankets, then a light racing saddle, then an English saddle. The horse shoes and bridle were slow going though. I had to start by gently touching her hooves and lifting her legs to get her used to the motions. I also had my blacksmith visit her and give her a pat or treat every time he was at the stable so that she would accept him more readily. When she finally accepted him, and the shoes I was overjoyed. Just about a month later I got her to wear a light bridle without a bit. After this I had to get her used to carrying a person on her back. She was annoyed at first and I was dumped on the ground many times. I started out with just me, and a blanket, or even bareback, but she was stubborn. Then, I had an idea. I put on some lightweight clothed and took her down to the pond. I let her get in to start swimming then I followed. I brushed up against her and got her used to having me in the water with her, then I slowly pulled myself up onto her back. She was shocked at first, but she didn't buck or rear. Instead she just kept swimming. After several swimming sessions she was letting me ride her on land as well as in the water. Now she trusts me fully to take care of her and doe only what is best for her, and I trust her to trust me (and not dump me in the dirt anymore!)

How did you gain her trust?;
Athena was taken home from the kill pen in early august. Her ribs were showing and she had deep wounds and bruises all over her body. Her eye was blinded, and bore a scar. Athena was extremely skittish at first, but with fresh hay, grain, and clear water she slowly decided she wanted to be around humans. She had made a friend in
Arion the south island fjord. Arion helped me gain Athenas trust through her seeing how Arion acted around me.

Congrats!
I loved all of the attempts, it was a really hard choice! Don't worry though, there are plenty of others to rescue!
I will have her cleaned up in the next day or two!
