❀ name ❀
Adeline
(means "pleasant" or "noble" in old German.)
❀ personality ❀
Adeline is a extremely mellow, and probably
the sweetest cow you will ever meet.
She is very fond of children; she lets the children on the
farm where she lives brush her, play with her ears,
and even sit on her back!
Adeline enjoys spring the most, because
the weather is just perfect and there
are lots of tasty green shoots to munch!
❀ history ❀
Adeline was born on a small farm near the seaside in Dorset, England. She was born prematurely, and
weighed no more than 50 pounds; 20 pounds less than she should. The farmer was convinced that she
would not survive. As money was tough, the farmer believed that an underweight cow wouldn't
be able to produce enough milk to sell, and therefore she was not worth keeping.
The farmer looked down at the small brown shape nestled in the grass, shivering.
He was beginning to regret his decision as he reached for his rifle, but it was to late. He couldn't
afford to keep this calf. As he raised his rifle, ready to shoot, he was toppled
over by sudden flash of green. "Daddy no!" it cried.
The farmer propped himself up on one elbow, and pushed the small figure of his daughter off of
him. "Daddy, you can't shoot it, you can't! The farmer looked at his daughter"Well, what can I do with it Anna? You know
I don't have time to take care of it!"
"Let me take care of it then!" pleaded the girl, "It is summer holidays you know,
and I'll wager that with the correct care I can get her weight back to normal"
She looked into her father's face, long and hard. Her father looked back into hers.
He saw the pure determination in her eyes, he knew this look well. He also
knew that there was no way he could shoot the animal now.
"Alright then" he said "But she's your responsibility. I don't
want anything to do with it until it's brought to the correct weight."
Anna's face lit up. She gathered the small calf into her arms, and walked out of
the barn. As she was leaving, she turned to her father. "She's called Adeline you know, not it!"
she called back, grinning with sheer joy.
Anna brought the small, weak calf into the living room, and placed it in
front of the fire. She knew it needed to escape the cold drafts of the barn,
but she also new the calf needed it's mother. Luckily, her father had just departed to the
town to sell a load of cabbages.
Anna walked back to the barn, grabbing a halter off of a hook on the front porch.
When she reached the bars, she put the halter on Adeline's mother,
and proceeded to lead the large bovine inside.
A few hours later, with a lot of newspaper on the living room
floor, both well fed calf and it's mother fell fast asleep in front
of the fire. Anna stroked the calves head, and began cutting pieces
of fabric from her mother's curtains to make collar for Adeline.
A few months went by, and Adeline grew into a fine young
cow with brilliant green eyes to match the collar made by Anna.
After being well fed and pampered by Anna, Adeline was
no longer a scrawny little calf. Instead, she was up to a healthy weight
and was beginning to sample grass.
More months went by, and then years. Adeline was no longer a calf,
and Anna was no longer an only child. Adeline now had plenty of new
playmates, and was beginning to bond with the farmer. She loved
it when the children came tromping out to the pasture in their
tall mud-boots to brush her or milk her. Even the farmer's wife
who did not usually care for animals to much would occasionally
sneak a lump of sugar out to Adeline.
When Adeline was five years old, she woke up one morning,
and felt something was different around the farm. She couldn't
quite place what it was, but something was off. A few hours went by, and
Anna did not come to give her her morning milk and brush. The farmer's
wife, however, did come out, carrying to large pails.
After the farmer's wife returned to the house with the two pails full of Adeline's
creamy white milk, the younger children came clumping down to see her.
"Moooooooo" said Adeline, which probably meant something along the lines
of "Where's Anna?" The children began petting her. "I miss Anna already"
said the youngest child, scratching behind Adeline's left ear.
"Yeah," said one of the older children "It was her decision to
leave the farm and go to university though."
Adeline wasn't sure what university was, but she did know it meant
Anna was gone. With a heavy heart, she made her way back to the
barn, and laid in the sweet smelling straw, and recalled the first time
she had seen Anna. It had been in this exact spot, where she lay now.
She fell asleep sobbing, her best friend was gone!
Three months later, Adeline awoke to the crunch of gravel
in the driveway, and the sound of a familiar voice. Adeline could not believe her ears!
She was so exited she began pawing the ground and making a great racket.
"Looks like someone's exited to see you" said the farmer's wife as
Anna ran towards Adeline, hugging her around the neck.
"Did you think I had forgotten you?" said Anna "Never! I'll just be gone for
awhile but I'll be back every few months to visit" Anna laughed as
Adeline gleefully licked her cheek and let out a great "moooo".
"Oh, and I got you this" said Anna, pulling a small brass bell from her pocket
and attaching it to Adeline's collar. "Think of me when you hear it ring"
she said.
Now, Adeline lives a peaceful life on the farm, pulling up tender shoots
from the ground and playing with the youngest child. The farmer's wife
makes award winning cheeses from Adeline's creamy milk, and Adeline
listens to the chime of the little brass bell and awaits the times when
The garden gate creaks open and Anna comes running to give Adeline a
big hug around the neck.
