story by simonpet wrote:I had decided that it was time to breed Caramel Milkshake, and I had sent advertisements about him, along with all his accomplishments. In the end, only one had replied, a man named Mason, and his Echobi, Nasira. Her show name was Doizer's Phantom Girl, and I had heard of her from somewhere. I wasn't sure if either my Echobis had raced against her, although it was possible.
A trailer pulled up, and I recognized Mason. He was unlatching the back, and I saw Nasira come out. She was a beauty, I thought, perfect for my Caramel Milkshake. "Hi," I said, slightly awkwardly.
In reply, Mason nodded. "Where do I put her?" he asked.
"In the stables over there," I said, pointing. "The stalls are spacious, enough for two Echobis in each one. But there will only ever be one per stall," I finish lamely. I walk Mason and Nasira over to the stables, and give them a tour. Mason chooses one of the roomier stalls for Nasira, and leads her back outside for her to get acquainted with my Caramel Milkshake. I shut Target up in her stall; it wouldn't do for her to ruin the meeting. Then, once Caramel and Nasira are outside, Mason and I walk back to the stables, where I make us lunch. While we're eating, I watch the pair get acquainted. They sniff each other, sometimes barking, and play, jumping around in the grassy field. I laugh as Nasira headbutts Caramel, and he wags his tail, and pounces on her in return. So the day passes, and we shut them into Nasira's stall, letting them fall asleep together.

Training: Fully trained at Level Five

Level one=261 words wrote:Coming in contact with an almost untouched animal was always dangerous. Her previous owners had simply let her go without any simple human contact. It seemed hard, getting so much as her head collar on her as they loaded her into the trailer. The drive was short, though it seemed longer than normal with the female making a ruckus in the trailer behind the truck. They made it back to the kennels and out came the Echobi. She nearly knocked Mason over as she tried to bolt but of course the young man was not easily thrown around. Getting control of the large animal, he led her into the kennels, tying her up in her pen before he washed her down. At first, the female was jumpy and pulled away whenever the water touched her but soon it seemed like all was going well when she finally calmed down. It seemed everything would go well as she seemed to completely settle once the bathing was over. When she was dry, he got out the brush and began to brush her down. It only took him a few minutes and now came the fun task of dealing with her teeth. With a hand full of raw chicken pieces in one hand, the toothbrush in the other, he began to work with her to let him brush her already yelled canines. He was disappointed with how little her previous owners had worked with her, this female was turning out to be a pretty good one too, that is one she settled of course.

Level two=292 words wrote:Mason had gotten the head collar on her before, but only to get her back to the kennels from the time he had bought her. He had named the female Nasira, her show name still being thought over the more he worked with her. It had been a few weeks since he brought her in and everything was going well, she was getting along with the other handlers and even allowing total strangers near her now. It was extreme progress that he would have never expected. Today he would be working with her on her racing head collar. There was little different between that and her travel collar, minus it being heavier than the other. She was out in the run, basking in the sun as he approached her. She seemed oblivious or just really didn’t care about the collar in his hand. When she lifted her head, he reached forward after kneeling down and placed the collar on her, latching it and then moving back as he waited for her reaction. Nasira at first was confused until she attempted to pull it off with the use of her paws but was unable to do so. Pulling herself up to her paws, she tried rubbing it against a tree to get it off, once again to no avail. Coming towards Mason, she sat down and looked down at the man, clearly wondering what he was doing putting this on her head. With a few of the raw chicken treats that she loved, she made no further complaints over the head collar and went back to what she would usually do as she headed further away from him and enjoyed her time out of the kennels, along with running with her handler, Mason.

Level three= 484 words wrote:Another few more weeks passed as Mason worked with introducing the reins on the head collar to Nasira. She was doing fairly well with it all and now he needed to get her use to the light saddle and the blanket that went under it. Though he preferred just using a blanket when he rode, he knew in order to race her and she would need to learn to have both. This would be a two day introduction as he didn’t want her to be over stimulated and panic over all the things being introduced to her. She was in her kennel, sleeping for the time being until he walked inside and was greeted with the normal gusto from the Echobi. A large tongue swept across his face and he frowned with a laugh before holding out the blanket. It was large, but it would not cover her entire back of course, just enough to the point that the saddle would be situated. Slowly moving around her, he let the female familiarize herself with the feeling of it against her fur as he placed it along her side and then on her back. She seemed not to care at all over the small fabric before she turned, grabbed it and shook it around, wagging her tail in the process. To her, this must seem like a game and it made him laugh, at least she found it amusing. So far, everything seemed to be going very well. Now, tomorrow he would bring in the light saddle.

It was earlier morning as he made his rounds about the kennel before taking Nasira out. With the female mostly still drowsy and calm from being woken up earlier than usually. He tied her to one of the posts outside and brought out the blanket again. She seemed content as it was placed over her back, not at all displeased with it, mainly because it held no real weight for her. Then he brought out the saddle, allowing her to sniff at it before he gently set it over her back. At first, she danced around from side to side, not liking the weight of it one her back. A growl came from her and he cooed at her to get her to calm down. It seemed that she was slowly growing use to it, well until he let her loose. She immediately dropped to the ground and rolled, trying to take the saddle off. Luckily, the tack was use to such behavior because that was how it was made. Rolling his eyes, he watched her antics for a good hour before she finally stopped, panting as she just gave up and glared at him with her bi-colored eyes. He laughed, watching as she came over and plopped down at his feet, head-butting his side and causing him to fall over her. This one was full of surprises.

Level four= 232 words wrote:Ah, now came the most dangerous part of the job when it came to owning these oversized dogs. Mason was not too keen on getting up on Nasira’s back but now, he had officially decided on a show name for the female along with the fact he would race her. Shaking his head, he watched as she walked around with her tack on. Everything seemed perfectly fine for the time being as he called her with a whistle and she came running towards him. She always did this, running at him full speed ahead and only stopping inches from him, the first time she had done that, he nearly had his life flash before his eyes. Without hesitating, he placed a foot in the metal stirrup and pushed himself up and onto her back. At first, she froze, unsure of what to do with her handler on her back now. Nasira then bolted, running around like a lunatic as she tried to get him to loose balance and fall off. She jumped around, but Mason would not allow her to lay down. After a good two hours she ran out of energy and a also tired Mason began to work on her turns and other things she would need to learn before he put her into a race. At the end of the day, both retired early for a good night’s sleep.

Level five= 243 words wrote:Here they were, registering the novice Echobi for her first race. Surprisingly, she didn’t react to the others around her. Though she did seem a little unsteady at times. Mason scratched her behind the ears from where he sat on top of her as he continued forward towards the gates. This was nothing like horse racing, minus the track. The Echobi’s didn’t get packed into stalls, rather, they stood in front of the gate assigned and waited. When the buzzer sounded, the gates opened and out ran the Echobis, including Nasira. She was panicky at first, unsure of what was going on as she had never really gone against any others. Soon, she realized what Mason was asking for her and picked up the pace. Things seemed to go well as she went up in placement as they rounded the second turn. It was a short race, only one lap with four turns, though of course it seemed like forever as she slowly inched forward until she was with the top five. She didn’t win it, but that was expected for a first time racer. Mason could not have hoped for better outcomes as Nasira placed in third that day. With a very tired Echobi, he returned home to the kennels and fed her, her favorite meal of raw chicken meat and hearts. The diet was by far really working for her coat, along with the bones she pretty much went through daily.
