What is a Firefly Foxel?
A Firefly Foxel is a special species of fox that rule the skies. Since they have an internal pouch of unknown, lighter-than-air gases in their chest, these Foxels can stay in the air for very long periods of time. They only come down to mate, lay their eggs, and once in a great while to rest. They can go for days up in the sky, resting their eyes while airborne. They stay up by "drifting"; a process in which their secondary lungs expand, and they float aimlessly like a balloon. This gives them a very puffed-up appearance when sleeping, almost looking like big furry balloons with butterfly wings.
Foxels are only about the size of beagles. Their massive tails make them appear much bigger, but their bodies are about that size.
Their paws are very small and weak, since they are almost never used to walk or even land. They use them for skydances (a colorful display performed annually using their huge, glowing tails and fluffy, colorful fur, to attract mates), and eating. They mostly eat berries and herbs, but are known to eat desserts and other tasty treats that humans leave out.
They lay eggs much like a butterfly would, and perform metamorphosis in the same way: chrysalises. Foxels do not earn their true name until they grow their wings, but they can take a nickname until then. This is a trial of strength; any failed metamorphs stay with a given name by the family, but it is not a true honor like completing metamorphosis successfully and earning a true name is.
Each Foxel is given an orb when they reach adulthood. Even Foxels that failed metamorphosis get an orb charm, but it is smaller.
When a Foxel is tamed, it acquires an orb collar to match their charm and to distinguish ownership.
