The old legends of our ancestors speak of the Ancients as great beasts who are the embodiment of power. No one really knows how these dragons came to be. Some say they are the result of a Rune Dragon reaching it's peak of the magic it holds within itself. Others say they are pure magic manifested into dragon form. I believe them to simply be what they are. Ancients ,and nothing more, though terrifying indeed. Where their existence came from is unimportant to these creatures. What really matters to them is their desire to obtain a Summoner to create a pact with and share in their powers. However, some pacts are cursed while others are a blessing.

Tonight is the eve of Yule, a time when Eldamore and all it's residents rejoice and renew the bonds they have made throughout the year, be it Runes, loved ones, or friends, it is a night filled with joy and a soft snow blankets the land in white. You are one of the many Rune Bearers who inhabit this land and are surrounded by loved ones weather you have a Rune of your own yet or not. Your are not overly special and content with your life. Though you are not rich you are neither poor and your family loves you for who you are. You do not change for others and are simply happy being you. Nothing extraordinary happens to you but it appears that this night may be different than most...
You walk alone on the trail back to your home, although the usual path is covered in snow, you know the route like the back of your hand and do not fear the night. Tonight is the Eve of Yule and you are just returning home from a loved one's cottage. Bundled up in thick warm furs, your breath escapes you in small puffs and billow softly before evaporating. Little light graces these paths and all you have to go by are mostly the Moon's silver glow as she illuminates the landscape. The snow slows your efforts as it reaches to your knees but you press on with the thoughts of warm tidings awaiting you at your own cottage. But a sudden slip of your boot on ice hidden beneath the snow makes you topple forward and you suddenly begin a decent down the hill that ends with a sharp pain to the back of your head and then darkness fills your world...
You can feel no pain as you lay there but do not yet realize what has happened. Your world is still dark and a part of you just wants to let it take you as you grow tired and cold. But then you feel a sudden warmth all around you and you try to move to embrace it. 'Be careful moving young one. You have gone and split open your head and your life escapes you as we speak.' Your eyes blink open in surprise to the voice as your vision is soon filled with red fur and bright lights. The suddenness of such things makes you squint as you wait for your eyesight to adjust. Pain fills the back of your head and the creature above you lets out a small bugled cry like that of the great elks. 'I said be still young one! Now you have gone and reopened your wound, oh and now it's bleeding again dash it all...' You could feel the warm liquid of your own blood pool onto the back of your neck as you see the full form of what stands before you.
A great dragon with crimson fur and wings made of light stands tall and regal before you. Indeed now you know why it sounded like an elk since his form seems to represent the majestic creatures. But his face...a wooden mask seems to be the creature's face but his eyes hold such warmth that you are compelled to listen to him as he places his head close to yours. 'It is rare for one your age to see me human. Mostly only the children can tell what I am but adults just see an elk, all be it a strange one.' He chuckles softly to himself as you feel his magic flow though you and the wound on the back of your head grows less painful. 'Quite a stumble there, good thing I was around to help you human. It is always disheartening to see the frozen bodies of lost ones in the snow. Especially on a night such as this.' You simply can't draw your eyes away from him in wonder as you search for you voice to greet this beast, "W-who are you?" It was all you could truly say as the dragon lifts his head and puffs out his chest, 'I am the Ancient of Lights. Have you not heard the tales of me when you were a child human? I bring the light and warmth to your world and protect the young children from harm. I am the Warden of Yule, as many call me, though the adults here usually just see me for a common deer. I can tell you see me for what I truly am as the children do. It is always nice to see the rare adult still have the beliefs they once held as a child. You can not imagine how many lose that faith once the world claims their hopes.'
The Ancient almost seemed sad as he said this and his lights dimmed a little as looked up at him with joy. "I can't believe it! I mean, I suppose I always knew deep down but it's really you and...and you saved me..." Your voice trailed off as you realized that your protector as a child still watched over you and saved your life this night. You stood up quickly and the Ancient seemed surprised as you reached up as far as you could and hugged his neck. The thick fur smelled of pine needles and the husky scent of burnt wood and embers. You grasped tightly as if you feared you may lose him as you tried your best to express your gratitude towards the dragon you were so happy to see. "Thank you so much for saving me Yule." You whisper into his fur as he bends his head to look at you, 'You are welcome dear child. I would never leave you alone and my lights will always be there in your darkest of hours.' His voice rumbled deeply within his chest as you listened to the strong steady beat of his heart. You knew the two of you would never lose sight of one another again and could feel your faith restored in something you thought you had lost when you were young so long ago.
Tales go on to say that the human and Ancient are always seen together on this night, either as humans or as Summoner riding upon the back of the great beast through the snow and trees. For the Ancient of Lights offers a blessed back to those who still believe in him and will always be there to protect the children of Eldamore. Some say that a part of him is always shone through the soft lights that decorate homes during this time, but it is actually your heart which lights those flames and holds the small flicker of hope that makes this holiday truly special.
Thorn's Writings wrote:Journal Entry #30-Study Notes-~Summoning Stone of the Ancient of lights- This summoning stone is actually a clear crystal ornament with a single bright light that floats within it, never burning out and never loosing it's warmth as it fills your heart with joy.
~The Ancient of Lights is known mostly to the young children and Runes of Eldamore. To those who believe in his lore he brings light and warmth in their darkest of hours. A Warden in the night, his magic is filled with joy and the lights which emit from him chase away the darkness. He offers a blessed pact and will guide your way if you are ever to become lost.
~The Ancient Rune has many names; Yule, Yuletide, Evergreen, etc...What its "true" name is, however, can only be known by it's summoner...
~This Ancient only appears during the time of Yule and only shows himself to others on the eve of this holiday. His magic is stronger when you believe in him and his love for the young of this world is endless. His very presence will melt the snow as well as any fears you may have while also lighting your way if you ever grow lost.
~This Ancient actually does not transform into a human often and rejoices in his dragon form mostly. However, when he does take on the appearance of man he is a tall lean fellow with light chestnut hair and warm hazel eyes. Even as a human he is filled with warmth towards others and loves to spend time with children rather than adults. The children know what he is with clear eyes while adults usually just see a jolly young man. However his summoner may still believe and if that is the case then he is happy to see that still in the older generation.
