---i saw her first at a gas station where mostly mosquitoes frequented. i couldn't pronounce her name, so i called her love. she didn't have enough money to buy this dvd of a 2012 movie and for a reason ("it wasn't at walmart or target!" i asked her about going online. she blushed out of embarrassment and fled) she detailed to me afterwards, she had to have it. so i paid for her.
---school kicked back in and came my second meeting with her. hesitant, i introduced myself again and she, bewildered, replied, "hi, my name's love."
i helped her with notes from time to time, let her copy off my math homework too. when i saw her in the hallway, i waved and imagined as i turned, she called my name and how fast it became my favorite sound.
during fire alarms we stood by each other, our hands brushed and i thought of how intimate it all was, that i could just take her hand and witness her white grin in the dark; the one she wore during presentations, the one that glowed like the ultraviolet stamp from the local arcade.
at night i found her, safe in my mind. fingers trailing building exteriors, walking beside me. her white grin was there when she saw me and i made a home out of her laugh. in all her vibrancy, she called my name. i told her she was beautiful, and that one day i hope i can really say it. she responded with all the right things; i'll find someone to say these things to. the dream washed away before i could tell her, i hope it's you.
high school washed away in the same way dreams did, so gradually i lost myself with it. the good students wearing gold were saying things about finding things, mainly themselves in high school. i filled in blanks when their words started to dance with each other too closely, and somehow it becomes a speech of how i'd rather find myself with her.
---a year later, i hear her name again, lilting in a conversation about a new art exhibition. i'm running, between breaths telling myself, i won't let go again. the sun touches her, soft, rosy-fingered; careful not to scare. it's the way i was once with her. i remember my frightened hands while she registers me, the girl who loved her too quietly.
there's minute differences about her.

she still has the slight gap in her teeth and red hair, but longer now, enough to tickle her chin;

the deep brown complexion and the freckles she gets when the sun kisses her for too long.

her dark eyes that resembled the bermuda triangle in the thread you lost yourself instantly in both.


though, i notice one thing that remains a constant. i tell her she's beautiful.

she takes my hand in the way i wanted to in high school.


she responds, "no, i'm love."

when you are afraid to die, and you go over all the things you wish you'd've done, and the biggest fear you have is never getting to tell her you love her, that is love.
