"Yo Sandwich!", a familiar voice whispered from the seat behind him. "She's talking to you, stop zoning out!". "Sorry, what?", he asked the speaker lady. "Would you like to share what you want to be when you grow up?" she asked him. "Uhhh...", the mumbled, frantically searching for an answer; his mind blanked, and his brain would yield no ideas to him. "Honestly? I don't know.", he decided to say, and snickers popped up around the classroom as a result. "Heh, some of us could be famous for our work, and the best you have is I don't know? Even you must know you don't have any special talents.", sneered a voice from the back of the classroom. "Joey, you're practically begging for detention", warned the teacher from the front of the room. "No no no, it's normal to not be interested in anything in particular. We actually have a pamphlet for that!", the speaker said to Sammy in a cheery voice, handing him one. Internally, Sammy agreed with Joey, but he decided not to voice that thought.

As Sammy got out his keyring to lock the door, he remembered that moment. Just like then, he still had no idea what he wanted to do. Taking the key out of the door, he began to walk to his bike. Even though he had a job as the manager of a fast food place, it was supposed to be a makeshift job until he found a career; he'd been working there for about a year. He unlocked his bike and began to pedal to that familiar gas station. While they didn't have much quality food, it was cheap and better than eating the greasy burgers from his restaurant. I wonder if Joey knew I'd at least be living alone. He probably expected me to live with my parents. At least no one expected me to do much; I'm not doing anything for a living right now. The words pounded into his head as he screeched to a halt in front of the building. Quickly locking his bike, he went in. After buying an apple and an instant mac'n'cheese, he began to unlock his bike when he began to hear a noise getting louder. A child was calling for their parents, with tears spilling down their cheeks onto the cold ground below.
He finished unlocking his bike and went and crouched down next to the child. "Hey buddy, what's wrong?" he asked in a soft voice. "M-my parents were at this st-store with me, a-and when I was looking at c-candy th-they left me behind!" the boy wailed. "Shh, shh, it's okay, I'll help you find them. Do you know where they were going?". "I-I think they were going to the su-subway near the fast food place?" the child whimpered. I guess I'll have to go back there before I go home, thought Sammy. "Okay, let's walk there together", said Sammy, grabbing the child's hand with his left and leading his bike with his right.

Sammy never realized how much longer it took to walk his normal route on foot. However, they had finally reached his workplace, and the subway station was in sight. Sammy looked up at the pedestrian traffic light. Just a few more seconds, and they could cross the road. Suddenly the child yelled, "Mom! Dad!". The boy's parents were waiting across the steet for him. Suddenly, the boy started to run across the road to them, even though the light was still red. With horror, Sammy saw a huge 18-wheeler racing towards the crosswalk. Thinking quick, Sammy sprinted to the boy and grabbed his hand, rushing him to the other side of the road. He hugged the boy close to him as the truck rushed by, skimming the end of his tail. He heard a loud honk as he released the boy, who ran to their parents. "Freddie, Freddie, are you alright?", the boy's mother cried. "Y-yeah, th-thanks to this man! I-I thought you had left me!". "Oh no, we would never leave you! We though you were behind us, and headed back as soon as we realized you weren't!", his father exclaimed. "Thank you for saving our little boy!", the mother told Sammy. But he wasn't listening; he was thinking. "Mister?", the boy asked him. "Oh! You're very welcome. Be sure to look both ways before crossing, okay?" Sammy replied.

The boy's parents thanked Sammy, but instead he was the one who should be thanking him. After leading the boy across the road, he finally realized what he wanted to be; a crossing guard!
