kalon name: Artemis (Greek goddess of the hunt and nature)
gender: Female
gift:
why?:
Artemis had known immediately what she'd wanted to give her friend for their birthday, and it was going to be perfect. She visited the flower shop as soon as she could, and bought a packet of seeds without checking to see what variety of flower they would produce. Artemis knew the appearance would matter little, and that her friend would appreciate anything Artemis had taken care to cultivate especially for them. Besides, Artemis knew surprises were the spice of life.
Artemis brought the little packet of seeds home and got to work immediately. She dug a pit in the mulch around her tree, delicately placing and burying a ring of seeds around it. She diligently cared for those flowers for days, weeks even. Watering them, giving them scraps of compost to grow with, even surrounding the flowers with chicken wire to keep the pesky rabbits out, who had repeatedly nibbled on her plants in the past. Artemis put her heart and soul into the little plants, proudly watching them grow tall and strong as her friend's birthday steadily grew nearer. Already, a ceramic pot rested on Artermis' kitchen table, waiting to be filled with the flowers when the time came.
However, nature had other plans. A late July rain swept through Artemis' neighborhood, water pouring over rooftops and swirling into gutters. The rich, soft soil housing Artemis' dear flowers was no stranger to rain, in fact the flowers thrived on it. But this rain, this rain was heavy, and soon hailstones began falling from the sky alongside fat drops of water. The hailstones soon replaced the rain altogether, clattering to the ground and shredding the leaves of all of the unlucky plants below. The flowers were victims of the hail, the petals falling to the ground while holes spread through the vibrant, green leaves, killing the flowers Artemis had so carefully cared for all this time. The hail passed, and life went on, but the next day, the fated birthday of Artemis' friend, there was only one flower of dozens that had survived the storm.
The flower was soaked, and its leaves were torn, but it was a survivor, and it was the one that Artemis carefully dug out of the ground, gently transferred to the pot, and gave to her friend. She looked at her friend as she handed them the pot, nervously fiddling with her hair. It wasn't a pretty flower. Not anymore. It was sad and drooping, and Artemis felt ashamed that this was the fruit of her labor. Her friend would surely criticize the sorry state of their gift, but to Artemis' surprise, they smiled brightly, stroking the flower gently, "What a beautiful gift... Thank you so much!"
