Fear of the Deep
=====Her young paws kicked playfully into the sand, splashing up clouds of it. As an infant, Nymph loved the reefs that surrounded her island: water pressed all around her and fluttered her feathers and fur, but she giggled when the crab tried maneuvering out of her sight. It's little feet scuttled and moved much faster than her body when she wasn't using her strong tail. With a wiggle, the crab managed to get itself underneath a rock, completely wedging itself and ultimately sealing its fate and Nym's next meal. The stringy meat that lied inside of the crustacean was one of Nym's favorite treats, so much so that she had followed it so far from her island just because she was toying with it. Sticking out her paw to flip the rock, she went stone cold.
=====An ocean trembling loud rumble was purring out there. She looked and saw how close she was to the drop, only a good twenty to thirty feet. She didn't stay to listen to a second gurgle, her instincts screamed at her to swim home, and her tail acted without Nym thinking. Whatever that was out there, she didn't want to find out: it could have the crab and she wouldn't fight for it.
=====On the beach again, the water that dripped off her wet, otter-like fur was soaked up by the sun's warmth. The land was much more comforting than anything deep in the ocean right now. Nym's gills fluttered and arches quivered as the last of the water seeped out of them as her body naturally switched her means of breathing. Getting out of the water was a bit of an experience: she would feel as if she was choking until the trachea opened and gills sealed shut again. The leopard-shark colored plumerian shook her wet body and gave up looking for seafood for the day. Never again did she trust what was way out, and she had repeated nightmares of the possibilities.
=====Nymph's home in Hawaii is rather densely populated with an assortment of birds and lizards, but therearen't many people she actually talks to. Nym talks plenty to herself- that and she has a peacock gecko without any name. She identifies the lizard mainly because it is the only gecko that she can get close enough to without it dropping its tail and/or scurrying off. The gecko hangs around her all day: perching on her head, hiding in the soft fur below her ear, and sometimes just laying on her back.
=====Nym's favorite foods consist of the ocean's insects: crustaceans. Chasing down even anything with a shell to eat the gooey insides that are within. The only one that she finds trouble with are clams; she mainly gathers these in a large amounts, dragging them in a leaf to drop them off high rocks to shatter them. Fireflies have proven to be delectable, but not filling.
=====When it rains, this gives her an opportunity to really enjoy herself. The pelting rain knocks bugs out of the air and the fish come up for a frenzy of eating, and Nym comes out for a feast. In one storm, Nym can get enough fish to fill a few rock pools that will sustain the fish for a few days before dying. The fish she catches too are gorged with insects, giving them an amazing flavor that Nym can't resist.
=====The island has plenty to do, even if it is so small. Nym lives in a small beach-side home that mostly is a cluttered mess of crates and assorted things she has found. She has always wanted to live in a lighthouse one day; there are a few that she hopes to buy, but the chances are still slim that she would ever be able to afford one. For now, she enjoys living in her home that has a large cliff baring over it. She swears that cliff will fall one day.
"Sup' summer babes! Most people just refer to me as Nym, but my full name is actually Nymph Nakamura. It's a bit of a mouthful so the shortened name is much easier. I don't have much to tell about myself because I'd rather show you: I'm an ocean photographer and a self-proclaimed professional collector.
My family has lived in Hawaii for generations! Our culture here is a little exaggerated by the tourists who feel the need to make even luaus an attraction, but if you'd let me, I can show you more of what Hawaii is about rather than the crap that's served up for marketing.
If you haven't noticed, one of the best stress relievers in Hawaii is surfing: it requires some concentration and focus to learn, plenty of practice as well, but there's nothing more rewarding than being able to sit on a surfboard and enjoy the day.
This little blue satchel I have is for all the cool things I find underwater: I once found a pearl as big as a quarter! Sadly, I was a lot younger and traded it for a dollar to a kid at school.
Back to serious business though. I want to show you more of what my life is like, and maybe I'll let you pet my gecko. I actually don't know. Most of the time he won't even let me pet him. To be honest, I don't even know if the gecko's a boy or a girl- Sorry! Getting off track again.
Nevermind, I'm seriously just going to show you."
"Ocean photography is my passion; it's the greatest dream to come true for me. The job requires a lot of body muscle to swim to the places that we need pictures of, but I guess that's just since I'm refusing to take a contract. If I really feel like I need to get a picture of a deeper part of the water that I can't swim to, I usually just rent a small boat that I can take.
The job is very time-absorbing, but it's what I love to do and I couldn't be happier about it. When I'm under the water, I just feel like that's where I was born to be. All the life down there is amazing and the treasures that lie in the deep are more extravagant than any found on land.
Many times, I can sell the things I find for quite a pretty penny to collectors, but as a collector myself, I like to keep the more valuable ones to myself. If you'd seen my own stuff, you'd know why I say I'm a professional.
As a photographer though, most of the images I can sell to people who want a pretty souvenir (Only thing tourists are good for in my opinion if you know what I'm saying), or I can manage to sell my best pictures to companies. It's really cool when I'm on the computer and I get to see my work being viewed all over the world. I'm lucky as a photographer actually: most people never get the same opportunities that I have gotten."
Nym's list of achievements:
Won two trophies in cross country running • passed through high school with a 3.2 GPA • attempted to sneak a kitten into school • Worked at a theater • Got suspended for cursing out a teacher (She had her reasons) • knows how to surf in a tunnel • got a dream job in photography • Worked as a part time waitress • Played Piano • Can play Keyboard • Only broke one phone • Found a missing boat • Found a boat wreckage • Gets out of bed early in the morning
Adaptable:
Hawaii is a popular tourist location, and any person who
actually lives there knows the pain. It seems every year
that the island is doing more and more to appease the
tourists' appetites for their culture. A lot of this though
also ends up to the Hawaiian people losing their culture.
Luaus are very important to them and used to be special:
now they are just an attraction it seems. Nym has gotten
used to the changing times, and she even prints
postcards out of pictures she's taken to sell and make a
bit of harmless profit herself. Of course, nothing is
wrong with a prank here and there either.
Accepting:
There are a lot of things Nym wants, but she knows a lot
of those things will never happen for her. Many times,
she has given up on things she wants. Even in the end
of a break up from dating, Nym takes only a few days
to accept the fact that it happened and keep moving
on.
Devoted:
As both lover and friend, Nym is devoted to the people
around her. In work, she is determined to get what
she wants or where she wants. Sometimes that even
means getting a little dirty and sticking your feet in
the water. This was something Nym learned after her
first few years as a photographer: no one had wanted
any of the pictures she was selling. An opportunity
came along though for a newspaper, and they asked
Nym if they could possibly get a few photographs taken.
She willingly accepted for low wage they offered, and
this kickstarted her career back up.
Imaginative:
Sometimes, doing a lot of the same thing every day just
gets a little boring. Nym has her own little fantasy
world she lives in though: she sees herself as a great
hunter of the ocean, scouring the floor and finding
secrets. She's a collector of rare goods and her gecko
companion helps her on these adventures. In real life
though, Nym is just collecting strange things that have
sunk to the bottom of the brine or pulled in by the
waves.
Oversensitive:
Even though she is proud of her work and what she does,
when a certain thing may not go her way, she can't help
but feel hurt by the fact that it didn't. When a particularly
good photo isn't bought, when her ideas aren't used,
and even when she plays out her own idea, and she
realizes that it wasn't ever as good as she thought. This
also ties into her self-pity.
Self-Pitying:
Nym has a bad case of feeling bad about herself. When
she gets down on her luck, she thinks everyone hates
her and that they all want to hurt her in some way.
This harms her social life in many ways, and people avoid
helping her when she is upset. She was told it was manic
depression a few times, but she refuses to believe it
could be. When she's in a time of pitying herself, usually
she'll curl up on her bed with her laptop and watch a
marathon of any shows she finds first on Netflix.
Lazy:
Being quite lazy when she doesn't have her job to do, Nym
sits around her home and skypes with people online. Even
on Wold of Warcraft, she can just use Vent chat with
friends online and her guild. On most days like these,
this is when she orders takeout food or any kind of food
she doesn't have to cook. If you open Nym's freezer, you'll
find plenty of pizza pockets and other assorted treats.
If you are staying over at her place though, this is
quite convenient.
Quick Tempered:
Some of her friends call Nym's quick temper 'shark frenzy.'
It's actually quite terrifying when Nym gets pissed mainly
because it's almost impossible to get her out of this state.
usually the time has to be waited out for her to eventually
calm down. She's been known to get physical in fights
during these bouts of rage, and Nym has gotten herself
into plenty of trouble with beating the crap out of a
person or two. When she is like this, never mention
anything about her androgynous appearance or her
choices. Just go with it or get out of the way.
When Nym goes into 'shark frenzy' it's her way or
the highway.
Official Thank You's (not for the contest, skip over)
Definitely didn't get to do all as much as I wanted; the deadline hit me like a brick to the face. Though I didn't get to do as much, I still really enjoyed drawing and characterizing this plumerian: the design was actually quite simple after I got used to it; the only part that I have to reference still are what the green marks are on each of the leopard stripes(?).
I'd like to say a special thanks to Houndiless: I had a lot of issues because of emotional stress and she was more than nice enough to help me through it. I helped her with a kia (very little though; I wanted to do more) and she helped me so much with this contest through a lot of morale support.
Everyone in the Red X Society (from the flox) needs to be given a big thank you from me as well. Though I had some major stress, I'm happy I still had you guys to talk to. It feels like so much has happened in just the amount of time this contest has been up.
I'm also going to say a lot of thanks to jern and .Puzzle for support; I've only been really talking to you guys for a short amount of time, but it's helped me a lot.
a poem from me wrote:As I look out into the sea, I see my home.
Sure, the land is where I roam,
But under the sea,
Is where I can be me.
The fish are my friends
It's just something you must comprehend!
The wetter I am, the better I am!
I'll tell you in one grand slam,
"Under the sea
Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea"

how the dweebs met wrote:It was an early summer morning, the sun was just coming up over the horizon. It was a great day for surfing. The waves were large off the coast of Honolulu Hawaii, but there were and abundance of reefs below the monstrous waves. Daytona noticed a large wave approaching, which mean it was time to start paddling. He lowered to his board and pushed his paws through the water. The wave came from behind him, but was larger than expected, causing him to go off course and hit a reef. The young surfer fell off the board, hitting his head on the reef. He sank into the water, but not for long. Lusca was also swimming in the area that day, getting in his morning exercise. He swam as fast as he could to the orange plumerians aid. Lusca dragged Daytona out of the water before getting a good look at him.
Daytona was hurt, but not badly. He was also unconscious, but Lusca could help. The two were not out of the water yet, so Lusca decided to heal the stranger. He quickly checked his surroundings to make sure no others were around; no one could know of his powers. A chilled feeling ran through Lusca as he closed his eyes to heal Daytona. It was over with in a matter of minutes; the bruises and small cuts gone. Daytona finally woke up in a small beach house with Lusca sitting in the corner, whittling away at a miniature sailboat. It was the usual set up, really. After talking for a while, the two became best friends.

beaded flower bracelet
Toblerone is somewhat known for his cute accessories. He wears the following bracelets/tail bands most frequently but he has other accessories as well. This bracelet was achieved from the Cayman Islands back when he was traveling to the United States. It was given to him by the Inn Keeper that looked after his room. Initially, he thought she had dropped it, but apparently it was supposed to ward off bad spirits.
fin rings
Lusca likes to sometimes wear these bangles-type things on his fins. He has lots of them, but they are mostly golden with a design or two on them. As I told you before, he's afraid of needles so these are magnetic clasp ons. He found these on the beach and found out that he can paint different design on them!
beaded aztec charm bracelet
/non-optional/
As Toblerone traveled the world he collected different pieces of wooden beads and a small charm with Aztec writing on it. He came up with an idea one day to string them together for good luck and good health. Ever since then, they've been his good luck charm.
tail ring
This tail ring goes around the upper portion of his tail. He is usually seen wearing it and tends to accidentally make a lot of noise with it. He found the ring on the beach and if fir perfectly on his cute lil' tail. After a few days of it looking bland, he painted two fish on either side of the band.
believe bracelet
This is one of Toblerone's less worn accessories but none the less, one of his favorites. The straps are made from Hawaii's palm trees and the plate with writing from the ancient blacksmith on Hawaii's big island.
beads of hope
/non-optional/
These beads of hope were given to Lusca before he left Greece by his mama. He never takes them off for fear of loosing or breaking them. Lusca makes sure to wear them everyday or he can become easily anxious. He is never seen without them.
April 12 2009, Bucharest, Romania wrote:My journey started when I left Greece. I bought this log book back in Bulgaria but saw nothing of interest while traveling here. Instead of a direct flight to New York, I saw an opportunity to travel and learn more. I'm entranced with the unknown beauty of Romania. So far, I've visited the National Village Museum in Bucharest, the Bran Castle, The Romania National Military Museum, and the always beautiful Corvin Castle. All in all, i've had a really awesome time here, but now I'm moving on to Ukraine.
March 20 2009, Lviv, Ukraine wrote:After leaving Romania, I wasn't sure how to feel about Ukraine. It was a nice place to visit but not everyone was nice. I met a nice couple that let me stay with them before traveling again. That was good. I went to many chapels and museums while in Ukraine and I loved it. I didn't expect to learn so much in one country. I was absolutely blown away at the amazing countryside and the gorgeous chapels. Some places that really intreated me were, Saint Sophia Cathedral, Mother Motherland in Kiev, the Museum of the Great Patriotic War, the Golden Gate, and finally, my favorite, the Ukrainian National Chornobyl Museum. Ukraine was a great place to learn and I definitely plan on coming back!
February 13 2009, Zagan, Poland wrote:I spent less time in Poland than I did any other country. I just felt sad the entire time i was there and I hated it, considering I'm severely optimistic. I only saw two tourist attractions while there and there were the Palace of Culture and Science and the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Both were astonishing and held so much information. I for one had a great time lea ringing in the Culture and Science building, however at the camp, was penetrated with awful sadness and unfortunately didn't spend long there. With much love, Poland, love Toblerone.
May 17 2009, Berlin, Germany wrote:I think I spent the longest time in Germany. There was so much to see and learn, it was hard for me to leave. I went to many attractions, but some of my favorite were the Berlin Zoological Garden, the Middle Rhine, Museum Island, and lastly, the Berlin Wall. I had such a great time learning the history and culture that followed behind this dark country. Sothing cool that happened was that I met a bro named Jace. He too was traveling Europe alone and we happened to meet at the one and only Europa Park. We hung out for most of the time there and we even swapped numbers at the end of our encounter. I will definitely be coming back to Germany, but next time for Oktober Fest!
June 16 2009, Versailles Palace, France wrote:I finally made it to Farce after backpacking through Germany. It's annoyingly hot and the locals look at me weirdly. It's probably the fins. So far I've visited the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Notre Dame de Paris and the Dsiney Land in Paris. My last stop was to visit the Versailles Palace and let me tell you, it was absolutely amazing. The structure was gorgeously made and I was in awe the entire time. I talked with the guide for probably an hour. Poor guy.
July 15 2009, Barcelona, Spain wrote:After leaving France I decided it was time to visit Spain. It's vast beauty and culture drew me in like a lamp to a moth. While there I went to many different festivals and fairs. I met many different people and overall had a wonderful time. I went to see the Palacio Real, the Running of the bulls, Cuenca, and lastly Alhambra. What countryside they had was just a beautiful as the city. One interesting thing that happened while in Spain, I met a quite spunky Plumerian named Paxton. We became good friends in a small cafe near Madrid. We ended up exchanging numbers after I found out he lived in the States. Now, I just can't wait to venture back!
August 18 2009, New York, New York wrote:I was sad to leave the continent I had come to love, but it was time for me to become a man. I had no idea of what waited for me in the States but when I arrived, it wasn't handed to me on a silver platter. I was alone and to be honest, afraid in New York. It was different than I thought it would be and the people were definitely ruder. I have no friends here so I was truly alone in the great city. They only good thing was that the exchange rates were good, so I had money on me. That was until I got mugged walking down fourth street. I didn't have a home so I waited all night on a bus bench, talking to people as the came and left. It was interesting, yet depressing. I did make some friends though; Callie, Ringo, their kinds. They were quite nice to to me. Leaving this journal on a good note, this is Toblerone signing off until our next adventure.
Hey! I'm me!
Hi Char! We haven't really ever talked much, but thats okay. If you want to skip over this, you can, it's be just saying stuff about me really and why I want Lusca. I own two Plumerians and they're names are Jace and Ringo. Ringo is married and Jace is on the hunt. I love the Plumerian community a lot. Everyone is so kind and great and I just want to get involved more. I'm quite shy but I've gotten more out there with my Plumerians that I own now so if I added Toblerone to the mix, i would be unstoppable I think I'd really make a splash. (get it?) I really want this fella because the instant I saw him, I connected like no other. I've never felt such a storm character connection. I've tried my very best to work on this through out the days and I've learned a lot through developing this character. If I were to win Toblerone, I think I'd die and you'd have to gift him to someone else (not really!). Anyways, thank you Char for this amazing chance and i really do hope you pick the best possible person <3
THANKS!
Hey char! I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to:
