She had always thought that it meant that she had been born next to the ocean and had never questioned further. She thought nothing of it until her mother came to her with a little wooden boat, a green blanket, a shell pendant on a cord necklace, and a bottle with a piece of paper inside of it. "I think you are ready for this now," said her mother. "This came with you when I found you on the shore." Pushing the items into Bayou's hands, her mother closed her eyes and turned away, retreating into their home. As she held the necklace, she felt it gently tugging her to the ocean. She uncorked the bottle and pulled out the paper, unrolling and reading it carefully. That night, she said good-bye to her mother and set off to find her place.
