I guess it's finally time to clean out mom's stuff, isn't it? My landlord wants it gone before I leave. I can't very well bring it all into space with me, so a lot of it I'll either have to sell or leave with someone down here. it makes my heart hurt to think of it, as though I'm leaving her behind. I hate it. maybe I shouldn't go on this trip. I'm not sure I can bear it.

I found something, in one of mom's boxes. an old ipod, from years ago. it's 2105; they don't even make these things anymore. but something about it calls to me. it's so small, so strong to have survived the years without mom. if it can do it, I can do. besides, if it belonged to mom, it must hold some sort of value.

I know, I know. I'm back again. but you won't believe what I found on the ipod. you know how mom used to want to be a singer, before she foraged her way into space travel instead? well, it's full of recordings. recordings of her. some of them are songs I remember hearing her sing while she walked around the mission base, and some are ones I've never heard before. she sounds so beautiful, so alive. I guess when she recorded these, she was. suddenly, I find it hard to leave. it's like an unbearable weight, pressing down on my chest and suffocating me slowly. or maybe it's been there since she died. maybe it's been there for a year now. maybe I'm only noticing it now.

the day of my departure is looming close. it's so hard to leave earth, to leave all my memories of mom, but I have to go, even if it's just for her at this point. two things bound us together- our love of space and our love of music. and now, with her ipod, I'm thinking maybe I don't have to leave behind either of those.
I've been listening to her songs all day, ever since I found them yesterday. and with it, a longing has returned to me. it feels similar to what I've been feeling over the past year, a longing for my mother, but it's different. slightly. I think it's a longing for space, a longing to be among the stars and planets she loved so much.
I've made up my mind.

all of mom's stuff is gone. everything except the tiny ipod. it's the only thing of hers I'm keeping, and I'm not sure why. maybe because none of her other belongings feel like her anymore. with my memories and her music, I'm taking her with me. she can be with me forever. it's hard, yes, but once I started getting rid of her things, I realized that those aren't her. she's not her belongings. she's memories, she's music, and she's the inherited desire in me to explore the depths of space, where few kalons have ever been. I don't need her clothes, or her laptop, or her art collection. I just need my memories.

the rest of the crew and I are leaving today. I've said goodbye to my friends, I've said goodbye to the apartment mom and I lived in. it doesn't hurt as much. I'm still listening to her music, but I'm not sad when I hear it anymore. I'm taking it with me, of course, and I'll never let anything happen to it, but I don't depend on it like I did in the last few days. I still think it's the most special thing I own.

Umeboshi's most treasured possession is his ceremonial tea set that he inherited from his grandmother. He had been learning under her wing for over two decades, and during that time, was trained in the grand tea ceremonies of their family. He had very little mind for the more clinical and money-based parts of the job. However, he was such a natural at creating a relaxing environment for guests that he was made a very special exception to the family traditions that had only seen women serve guests in the family tea house. While his grandmother was a force to be reckoned with, she eventually passed away after a brief illness. At the reading of the will, Umeboshi was shocked that he should have been called to receive anything at all. He was not surprised that the tea house was granted to his older sister (though his aunts had MUCH to say about that), but was humbled beyond all reason when her passing words were read to him, "You may not be management material, Umeboshi, but your wrists and your posture and your grace bring a sense of beauty so exquisite to all those who see you at work that it must be your paws that hold the most treasured of my possessions, because I trust that you will use them until the day they are ground back to the dust they once came from."

And it is so - Umeboshi uses these ancient tools to this day, serving tea, making small talk, and being a most gracious host to his guests.

Her grandmother's jewellery - basically the jewellery is passed down from mother to daughter for their coming of age ceremony - where the boys go off on their first hunt and the girls practice their acquired hunter-gatherer skills to prove their usefulness and find a place among the tribe- women who cannot gather and men who cannot hunt are more often than not cast out of the tribe.

Naledi wears her grandmother's jewellery pridefully, as she has proven to be both an amazing hunter as well as an excellent gatherer - as a princess should -, but unfortunately has left her tribe and village to pursue the big bad world by stowing away on a cargo ship with nothing but some sun dried meat, a little stored fat, some water and her grandmother's jewellery...

Rei has had this ring.. since forever. She only takes it off to shower. She refuses to remove it from her finger, no one understands why. It must have something to do with her parents... or maybe, someone she once knew?
