It was a bright, sunny Saturday morning when I woke up, I got up a bit late, I’d stayed up pretty late playing video games though, so it probably wasn't too big a surprise. I went over to my sister Cammie’s room and knocked on the door.
“Yes,” she called from the other side.
“Hey Cam,” I began, “you wanna play with me? We could race downstairs and pretend to be race horses?”
“I’d love to,” she replied, opening up her door and coming out. She made a whinnying sound and smiled at me before racing off pretending to be a horse. I smiled and did the same, racing after her down the hall, it wasn't long before I caught up to her and we were neck and neck.
“Geeze, you're fast Cammie,” I said breathlessly, trying to keep up the pace as best I could.
“Thanks Kenin,” she replied, beaming cheerfully at me, “you’re pretty fast too!”
I smiled, then found her cutting me off as she started to get even more into our game, I noticed that she was veering far too close to the small table with the vase on it. I tried to speed up and catch up to her and prevent anything from happening, but I was too slow and far too late. She tripped and ended up barreling into the table, knocking the vase off. I winced at the sound of it breaking before I rushed over to my sister.
“Are you alright Cammie,” I asked, ignoring the pain as a shard or two of vase stuck me in my paw pads because making sure that Cammie was alright was more important to me.
“I’m okay Kenin,” she replied, looking up at me in concern, “you okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine,” I said, smiling at her, “move outside of where the vase shards are and I’ll lay down where you were.”
“Why?”
“So I can take the blame when mama and momma come up here to see what happened.”
“No! Why would you want to do that!?”
“Because it’s my fault that this happened,” I replied trying to nudge her put of the spot, which she refused to do.
“No it's not,” she said stubbornly, “it’s my fault because I tried to cut you off.”
“But it's my fault that we were racing through the halls in the first place Cammie.”
“Well it's equally my fault because I chose to go along and play with you.”
“Look,” I began, “you can't afford to get in trouble again. You're already in trouble for the last time that you broke something in the house. Let me take the blame this time Cammie, I don't mind.”
“It wouldn't be right,” Cammie replied, “and besides, we’ll both get in trouble for lying to them.”
“Look Cammie, just let me take the blame for this, I don't mind, really!”
“No,” she yelled at me.
I was just about to respond when I heard one if my mothers clear her throat and arch her eyebrow, silently demanding an explanation.
“I’m sorry mamma,” my sister Cammie began.
“It’s my fault, I’m really sorry mamma,” I cut in, making sure that Cammie didn't get an opportunity to tell them what happened, “I challenged Cammie to a race and I got a little too into it and I decided to try and cut her off, but I ended up tripping and I rolled into the table and knocked the vase off.”
“You know you're bit supposed to run in the house Kenin Nebiri Hasenkamp, let alone rough house. So do you Cammie, you’re both getting punished for this because you both had a hand in it, now go to your rooms and think about what you have done.”
Cammie and I headed back to our rooms, when our parents were out of sight and ear shot, she whispered an “I told you so” to me.
“Yeah, yeah, I know,” I replied, “still, it could have been worse.”
“Why did you insist on doing this anyway Kenin?”
“Because you're my sister Cammie and I love you,” I replied, “I love to play with you and when you're in trouble, I can't play with you. Also, I want to make sure that you stay safe and out of trouble.”
“I like playing with you too Kenin,” she replied, smiling over at me, “but I don't need ya to watch over me. That's what we have parents for.”
“Yeah, but what about when they're not around or can see us,” I teased, stopping at my doorway, I looked over at her again, “hey, after our time-out do you want to play outside with me?”
“I’d love to Kenny,” Cammie said, beaming at me with that smile that always made me happy to have her as my sister. There was just something so pure about her that just made me want to protect her and keep her this innocent and fun-loving.
“Awesome! How about we pretend to be superheroes later then? I’ve always wanted to race around like the Flash,” I suggested, “or maybe we could pretend to be Pokémon?”
She looked pensive for a moment, probably teasing me, “Maybe, but only if you promise we can do Pokémon first! That sounds like more fun! Also less likely to get us in trouble.”
“You got a deal big sis,” I said, smiling back her before going into my room and closing the door behind me. While inside, I decided to play on my 2DS that I’d bought with some cash I earned and play one of my Pokémon games to help me plan what Cammie and I could do for our game when our punishment was over.
I love playing with Cammie, perhaps even more than playing with any of my other siblings, she was super fun and had an imagination that has no bounds, but I feel it's my job to ensure that she stays safe whenever the make believe gets out of hand.
