xxxxxxxShe never saw her reflections in windows, mirrors, puddles, or other bodies of water. Anything reflective was a window into the other world. Despite never being able to see herself, her eyes always caught something else staring back. In truth, it was more than one set of eyes. They were not always gazing at her but rather, their eyes were fixed on her piercing red wings. It gave her an uneasy but curious feeling about them. They had a black goo-like appearance as if they were melting. Their eyes white and filled with dread and sadness. Sometimes she would catch a glimpse of them crying... trying to reach out for her. It was as if they were attempting to speak out, but it was never clear enough to discern.
xxxxxxxEden repeatedly tried to tell her parents about the creatures that she had seen, but their reactions were always sour and distant. It creeped them out every time she mentioned it. Eden’s parents took her to see countless doctors and physicians but they could not find anything wrong with her. No medication seemed to help. She was a healthy, happy girl. Before she told her parents about what she was seeing, the two were always happy to show off what a beautiful daughter they had. Never shy to talk about Eden's wonderful gift. But now... it was quite the opposite. Eden was told to never speak about what she saw to others. She would often be hushed by her guardians.
xxxxxxxLife took a turn for Eden when she mentioned that the creatures she saw were often reaching out for her wings. The piercing look her parents gave her made a chill race down her spine. The tension between them could have cut her wings off at that very moment. “They used to always enjoy looking at my wings... my parents always talked about them... showing them to everyone. Mom and dad were so happy and proud. What happened? What did I do wrong?” Eden took a step back as she swallowed.
xxxxxxx“Could it be her wings...?” Her father breaks his line of sight to look at his wife who was standing next to him.
xxxxxxxWithout taking her eyes off of Eden’s feathered extensions she replies. "I don’t know.”
xxxxxxxEden began to feel very self-conscience about her wings now. It was an alien feeling for her. Their eyes filled with nothing but the red light reflecting off of the cub’s wings. The eyes that once showed love and delight for such a gift have been consumed by fear and something like disgust. You could tell mom and dad’s gears were finally turning. This sparked a painful memory for both of them.
xxxxxxxEden didn't always have candy red wings. When the family had gotten into a bad car accident many years ago, Eden had gotten a considerable amount of injuries. Most of them very significant or life-threatening. Her previous charcoal colored wings were too mangled to be saved, and one of her vital organs needed immediate attention. At the hospital, the doctors had to transplant a vital organ from a family friend. And scarlet red wings from an unknown donor. It saved her life. Ever since then, she had begun to see those strange beings.
xxxxxxxIt was all making sense now.~~~
xxxxxxxA few days had passed. Eden could tell her parents were avoiding her. They often argued with each other. On one occasion, Eden snuck to her parents' room door. It was late, and they had assumed that their daughter was sleeping. Although it was strenuous to try to sleep when the sound of parents arguing was only a few doors down. Getting up with a huff, Eden slides off her bed and lightly tiptoes to the source of the sound. As she got closer to the entrance of their room, mom and dad's voices became clearer:
xxxxxxx“What time is the appointment?”
xxxxxxxA more feminine voice replies. “Five in the morning. She will be too tired to figure out what is happening.”
xxxxxxx“Are we going to tell her when she wakes up?”
xxxxxxx“I’m not sure that will be a good idea. You know how she is with doctors.”
xxxxxxx“What are we supposed to do then? Lying will only make things worse...” A raspy voice grumbles. “I’m not going to lie-”
xxxxxxxEden pushes the door open slowly. The long creak interrupting her father. Shyly walking in, Eden clutches onto her sleeping gown. Both parents look and the mother quickly walks over to Eden.
xxxxxxx“Hun, what are you doing up? It is late, you should be sleeping.” She says with a soft expression. The whole situation was badly timed.
xxxxxxx"I heard you talking to dad. What were you two talking about?"
xxxxxxxEden's mother hesitated a moment. “Don’t worry about dear, please go back to bed.” Turning her daughter around, she gives the child a light push of encouragement to exit the room.
xxxxxxxThe mother was just about to close the door but a small, trembling hand grabbed onto her sleeve. "Please tell me... I'm worried."
xxxxxxx"Don't shut her out hun- we need to tell her. She deserves to know." Father heartens.
xxxxxxxFurrowing her eyebrows, she guides the cub into the room all while scowling at her husband. She sighs and folds her arms. "This isn't a good idea..."
xxxxxxxFather came closer to Eden and knelt to her level. "Do you remember when you told us about those people that you see in the puddles on a rainy day? Well, it isn't..." he said and pause. Eden waited anxiously for him to continue. "-it isn't normal for people to see those types of things. We think that your wings could somehow be connected with that." Gently putting his hand on Eden's shoulder, he gave a pained smile. "Your mother and I have decided to take you to the doctor to get them removed. It won't hurt baby, I promise."
xxxxxxxEden's eyes widened. The ground around her felt like it was moving. After everything that took place, just to have what seemed to be the only thing that brought them all joy- ripped away. Was obtaining these new wings... just pointless? Seeing the expression on her parent's faces forced her to come back to reality. Their eyes were sad and full of regret. The joy that was once there had faded a long time ago. Abruptly, the urge to run and cry engulfed her.
xxxxxxx"No!" Tears forming in Eden's eyes, she shoved her father away. Eden sprinted away from them, traveling down a staircase to the front door. She could hear her mother and father shrieking, calling her name. Eden wanted nothing but to escape. Escape from this spiral of confusion and distrust. Shoving the front door open, she was greeted by wind and cold drops of rain. Without looking back, Eden ran out and treaded far away from what was once called home. She found herself wiping water off her face. Eden couldn't tell if it was rain or her tears.
xxxxxxxThrough the streets and small neighborhoods, the child ran. Crossing an old bridge, she heard a faint voice coming from the pond beneath. As she stopped and looked, there they were... reaching out to her.
xxxxxxx"Please... save us."
xxxxxxxIt was hard to hear them through the pounding rain. But she didn't need to hear their voices. She could see them begging for help. Pleading. Seeing them almost gave her a comforting feeling. It was the only thing that was consistent in her life. Her trail of thought was interrupted when she heard people shouting her name. Immediately, Eden climbed up onto the wooden handrail of the bridge and flew upwards. Hovering high above the water, her parents and a few others had caught up along with a few others. They both shouted to her.
xxxxxxx"Eden! Come down!"
xxxxxxx"Listen to your mother Eden! You could get hurt!"
xxxxxxxEden's eyes were watching them but not for long. Her sight trailed back to the watery window below, she stays above in the sky. "They're here! They are real!" she pointed.
xxxxxxx"There is nothing there sweetie, come down to us please." Dad was trying not to cry and mom was panicking. The other people that came with them were trying to calm her down.
xxxxxxx"I just... want them to be happy again..." Eden began to sniffle, on the verge of crying again. It seemed that her parents' words were convincing her. But before Eden could descend to her family, a unison of voices came from the lake. The clarity of the voices stopped her.
xxxxxxx"EDEN... SAVE US."
xxxxxxx"How did they know my name?"Surveying her parents, she could tell they heard something as well. Eden shouts to them below.
xxxxxxx"It'll be ok dad, I'll come right back!"
xxxxxxxConfused and alarmed, they begin to cry out again. "What do you mean?! Wh-"
xxxxxxxThe young cub took a deep breath and dived, the screams of terror falling on deaf ears. Eden and the creatures' hands reached for each other, her wings piercing the liquid barrier between them.༄ »»————-▸||◂-————«« ༄༄ »»————-▸||◂-————«« ༄
