An eastern bluebird bounced around on a branch, tweeting.
One of Drachen's sweetest memories of their dearly departed grandma was from when she was a kit. It was nearly sunset and Drac had desperetly wanted to go outside to fly her kite all day but, as kits can tend to get carried away with themselves, she did just that. She had done just about everything with her Oma that day, everything except fly her kite. She grabbed her kite and ran over to her grandmother.
"Oma! Oma! Can we please go fly the kite?" She sat tentitively, staring upwards.
"But it is nearly dark meine liebling! (my lovely) Shall we play with some toys inside, instead?" Oma looked down at her grandkal lovingly.
Drac whinged "But...I reaaallly wanted to fly the kite today! Its still light enough outside! Can we please go? It means a lot to me." She looked like her eyes were starting to water.
"Alright, alright, put on your boots. Lets go by the lake where there are less trees for it to get caught on. We can't stay out too long though, okay?" The grandmother put on some boots and started helping Drac with hers.
"Danke Oma!" (Thanks) The little kal said excitedly.
"Bitte." (you're welcome) Oma replied, smiling at the joy this seemed to bring her grandkal.
They brought the kite down to the nearby lake, the sunset had just begun and all manner of warm colors started to fill the sky.
"Alright little one, you stand right here. I'll hold the kite over there and when I tell you to, start running that way!" Oma pointed behind Drac.
"Will do!" Drac cheered.
Oma took the kite a ways behind where they had both been standing, letting out the string. "Go!" She yelled. Drac starting running in the opposite direction and the kite took to the air. Oma walked back over to Drac to stand next to her and help her hold the kite. They were facing towards the sunset and had a perfect view of it. Beams of light shimmered on the water, oranges and pinks mingled with the lingering blue and white. "It looks just like the blanket you knitted for me Oma!" Drac smiled lovingly. "It does!" Oma replied. The kite dipped and soared, dancing through the brilliant sky. The sunset lasted for a couple more minutes but then it began getting dark. They began bringing the kite in and Oma grabbed it when it got low enough.
"Lets head back now while there is a bit of light left meine liebling." On the way back they saw an eastern bluebird flying to its nest, tucking in for the night. "You know, that is one of my favorite birds." Oma told Drac. "They are said to bring happiness and their colors are so cheerful!" Drac beemed at her Oma, she loved knowing new things and absorbed information like a little sponge. She would remember this moment always.
