What are you doing in my swamp?:
[499/500 words]
“What are you doing in my swamp?” the sinister voice growled. Kiku trembled in fear. “I-I-I’m so sorry... I didn’t know this was your swamp.” Her voice shook. It just cackled back as Kiku cried out in terror and darkness swallowed her.
Kiku jumped out of bed with a yelp. She looked around her, this wasn’t the spooky swamp in her dream, just her bedroom. Letting out a sigh of relief, she looked at her nightstand where a small silver anklet with a purple gem lay. So much had changed since she first received that anklet. Who knew an entire life could be turned upside down after one incident. It had been traumatizing enough for her to constantly have nightmares. Although being quite a long time ago she will never forget it.
It had been a normal day in the village she grew up in. Kiku was playing with her school friends tossing a ball around, until this bully in their class, Hopper, showed up snatching the ball. He smirked “Scram Losers.” Being the hot headed and bold child she was Kiku quickly retorted with “Oh I’m sorry, were we meant to be offended? The only thing offending me is your face.” Hopper’s face reddened, “You idiot!” he tossed the ball at her too fast for her to dodge. SMACK! It hit her in the cheek and she fell to the ground. The impact made her silver anklet on her leg fly off. “What’s this?” Hopper picked it up. “Give it back!” “If you want it back then go get It.” he then tossed it behind him into the dark swamp. “You know the stories about that place, the Madremonte lives there, be careful she might find you!” he cackled. As he left Kiku just stared into the bog. “I am not afraid.” she whispered to herself. With that she walked into the thick undergrowth and disappeared into the darkness.
She eventually found her anklet but she was completely lost. Hoping to find a way home she continued to wander. She had thought she was brave before but now she could see it was only an illusion, she was terrified. Then she heard the most evil voice imaginable growl “What are you doing in my swamp?” the sound rattled her bones. Then a monstrous lady emerged covered in bushes and plants, her limbs seemed to be made up of tree roots and her sharp teeth shined next to her glowing eyes. Darkness enveloped Kiku as the swamp around her tormented her. Twigs flew at her face and rain matted her fur. In panic she ran head first into a tree, blacking out, the last thing she remembers is the Madremonte standing above her with a wicked smile.
She woke up in an entirely different place. She didn’t know how or where but she wasn’t home. Little did she know that she was far away from her hometown and that it would be that way for a very long time.

The Madremonte is a creature of Colombian
Folklore. Her role is to protect nature, she rules the wind, rain, and
vegetation. She punishes those who invade her territory, by
making them get lost. Paths will suddenly disappear and
become overgrown with vegetation, mountains will change
their shape, and the person becomes dizzy and will often sleep
for several hours. When they awaken, they are completely lost. The
Madremonte looks like a large woman with glowing eyes, large teeth, and
bony hands. She is covered in leaves and moss and her hair is a tangled
mess of plants that cover her face.
Kiku’s silver anklet was a gift from
her mother a long time ago. She almost never takes it off.
It is of great importance to her especially now since she
hasn’t been home for years. It is the only thing she has
left of her life before getting lost. It is a plain silver color
with a few swirl designs going around it. In the center there
is a small purple opal like stone. It symbolizes, by
strengthening intuition, to break away from any
self-imposed bonds of past or present lives.
