"Cinderella took out a glass slipper, showing it to the palace officials –"
"Miss?"
"Please raise your hand before speaking," the teacher said loudly, her face showing obvious annoyance. She, like any other person, did not like being interrupted.
Marian raised a hand, a slightly impatient look on her face. The kindergarten teacher nodded, allowing her to speak.
"This story isn't making any sense. I thought that all magic was supposed to disappear, including the shoe."
"Well, perhaps some magic was left behind –"
"But shouldn't they describe why some magic was left? And why the shoes were left behind, and not the dress?"
The teacher's mouth pulled into a thin line, and her eyebrows knit together. However, she still maintained an air of serenity and tranquility. "It's only a story, which means that many things are made up." Her voice sounded a bit strained, as if she were trying to repress a cough of some sort.
"I know that it's just a story, but the fairy godmother said that 'all magic' would disappear, which includes the glass slipper!"
"That's why it's a fairytale. Because some elements aren't concerned with reality."
The students looked on as the girl hesitated for a moment, trying to compute what the teacher has just said, and trying to come up with a rebuttal. "But it just doesn't make sense!"
An amused smile pulled the corners of the teacher's lips upwards, thinking how finally the exasperating student was running out of arguments. "It doesn't have to. Now, let's focus on finishing the story, shall we?"
"But –" Marian protested, before being cut off.
"It's just all made-up stuff, now, as I was saying..."
"But –"
"It's just. A. Story," the teacher said through gritted teeth, with an annoyed tone that made her usual honeyed voice sound like it was growling.
"But –"
"Will you stop interrupting me? I've had enough of your jibber-jabber. I do not need you interrupting the class, Marian. Go sit in the corner." After directing the sulking girl to where a stool was in a corner of the classroom, the teacher turned back to the class, her usual radiant smile back on her face.
---
"And here we see a burning house behind me, set to flames by the weapons of rebels," Marian said, looking straight at the camera. She wasn't even thinking about what she was saying. She didn't want to think. Because the situation was too horrible.
She had come to work in the news because she wanted to escape the terror of killing someone, and it would be fun to travel to other places.
But this wasn't what she had signed up for. As the camera was shut off, she turned around and looked at the blazing house.
Someone had lived there. That was their home. And now it was burning to pieces.
For once in her life, Marian felt homesick. She felt like she wanted to cry, but this time for someone else. For the world.
But tears wouldn't make any difference to what was burning to the ground.
---

Marian, since small, has been a firm believer in following rules. Rules were law. Laws were supreme rules. Supreme rules were laws of the entire world. She feared punishment, and obeyed almost every rule given to her. however, if she thought one arbitrary, she would speak out against it. Marian has never enjoyed fairytales, thinking them to be too illogical. Instead, she liked non-fiction books, such as biographies on people in history, or more realistic folktales. Myths, legends, and other popular pieces of writing others enjoyed were not part of her life. She focused more on immersing herself in battles, wars, and adventures of real-life heroes. Art and sports were never her strong point.
As she grew up, Marian got much better at arguing against people constructing points to support her opinion, and decided to join the Speech and Debate club at her school (because her crush was there). At first, she was merely there to be there; to earn credit for college applications, to hang out with people, but she found out that she could do so much better by actually trying to win the contests, and that she rather enjoyed yelling people down. She quickly rose through the ranks, and became leader of the club. Her grasp of logic and evidence was prominent in her debates.
There was a time when Marian suffered depression and anxiety. She had read about it, heard about it, knew about it, but stars, she had never experienced it, and it was a shocking, numbing, experience.
Marian had lost a debate contest to an enemy horribly; she didn't even know what she was thinking during the debate. She had received her first blow to her large ego, and as if that wasn't enough, schoolwork began to pile up, along with high school applications, and the annoying stuff in life that she had never noticed before because honestly, she had never bothered to notice. But now she did, and her world became a nightmare.
She couldn't feel anything. She couldn't stop crying as she lost debate after debate. Her confidence went down, along with the large pride she had before. She couldn't help thinking she wasn't good enough, and didn't deserve anything until she made it to Debate Nationals. 'Winning the school round is enough,' oh, stars, no. It wasn't. Even though she knew she had already lost the chance of making it to nationals, Marian kept pressuring herself to work harder and harder until she dreaded walking into the room with two tables. She wouldn't cry for help, being the prideful girl she was, but one night while eating dinner, she broke down and began crying and wailing and crying and begging for all the nightmares to end and for her just to win a debate once and make it nationals. She eventually snapped out of depression, but it took the entire summer, and she looks at it as a 'complete waste of a summer vacation'.
During her teenage years, Marian also found another passion – writing. However, she was only able to write fanfiction, being lazy to come up with her own characters. Her online alias, Hilde (username: rulesoftheworld), was famous for writing fics about what happened between scenes of books/movies, and the little things that weren't shown onscreen. She never wrote about non-realistic AUs, wizards, or anything of the sort. She wrote about what happened between two characters, realistic adventures never shown by canon text, and tried to put her debating logic and sense into even the most fanciful books and movies known to the world. However, when she got to high school, she began to post poems and short stories of her own creation.
Being a good debater, Marian went to study law. However, she eventually worked as a newscast for international news, after being unable to defend one of her clients (who was, in fact, her first case), who was sentenced to death. It was a traumatic experience for her, and also a blow to her ego. Obviously, her first taste of law was not a good experience. Also, she felt that she was better off just stating what had happened instead of being responsible for someone's death. Due to her job, she was constantly away from home, and rarely travelled back to the states to visit her family.
After returning to the states after a few years, Marian went to her room and locked herself in, not even bothering to say a greeting to her parents and brother. There she stayed for some months, struggling with herself. The sights she had seen; cities wrecked by civil wars, children out on the streets, soldiers dying, all haunted her mind. It was the darkest time in her life. Suffering from severe PTSD, Marian could not even bring herself to go to sleep, for fear of waking in cold sweat from nightmares. It was hard to not give up and just let depression control her life, but she managed to battle it. She stayed in her old room at first, then slowly started to walk around their home, then around the block, then began to revert to her normal self. For once, she understood why so many people preferred fantasy over reality – because reality was a cruel and dark world.
Yet, she still accepted the laws of that world.
After the dark days of her life passed, she started to look for a job again. She moved out of her parents' apartment, and bought an apartment in central New York City. Looking at the city lights around her gave her hope that the civilizations she had seen destroyed, would eventually become prosperous cities. Marian currently works in a small library-cafe that she opened, and also halftime as a secretary for the CEO of a large company.

P e r s o n a l i t y
Marian is determined and never gives up. She does not believe in the aesthetic 'a beautiful loss,' and is only set out to win. Marian is a strong willed girl who refuses to be wrong. What's her view will remain her view, no matter how you persuade her beg her to change her mind. Overconfident and pride are Marian's bad traits - but also weaknesses. Her pride is like a balloon - once pricked, even by a thin needle, it will pop, and she will be plunged into darkness. Though she has been taught a harsh lesson before, being prideful is a hard habit to be rid of. However, Marian admits her mistakes as long as you are able to point out what's wrong.
Though she seems like she is an overly serious person, Marian enjoys pranking and tricking people. April Fool's is her day, and on March 31st, you can see the gears in her head turning, thinking of devilish and creative pranks unlike last year's.
Growing up in an all-male family made Marian a bit prejudiced against girls who wear 'girly things', such as dresses, skirts, earrings, necklaces, etc. For a while, as a toddler, she was confused on whether she was a girl or boy. Girls who cried and were scared easily were frowned upon, and if they wore dresses with flower patterns and lace and ribbons and bows, they would be detested. Marian eventually got rid of this thinking during her adolescent years.
Marian may have a creative imagination, but it always follows the rules of the real world. She sees no point in imagining what cannot possibly be achieved. If given the choice to go to a fictional world or stay in our reality, she would launch into a long tirade and analyzation of if that world followed the laws of science. Knowing that she has to understand how that fictional world would work, she would never choose to go to places like Neverland or Hogwarts. Her head would hurt from trying to instill science and logic onto those worlds.
Since she was small, Marian, unlike most kids, did not look at adults as all knowing beings. She knew that parents and teachers could be wrong, and especially that adults we couldn't apologize and admit their mistakes were not to be trusted.

F e a t h e r
Marian got her feather when she travelled to a particularly disastrous city – all in ruins, with no hope left for it. However, a small girl had thanked Marian for her help on improving their life with this blue feather, and it has since become a precious relic to her. It was a bit odd for an adult kiamara to not yet have a feather, but Marian kept insisting that, "she hadn't found the right one."
When the orphan girl handed her the bright blue feather, washed clean in the little supply of water they had, Marian hugged the child and cried as if she were one too.

R e l a t i o n s h i p s
Marian calls her brother 'Reginhart' to get on his nerves, especially when it's around his friends. She constantly tries to prank him, and comes up with plans that he would never imagine. She is almost never serious around him. Though she usually agrees with his views, when she doesn't, she tries every way to persuade, bribe, or blackmail Cooper into agreeing with her.

Marian's relationship with Pocky is a bit distant. She sees him as a much more mature figure than Khajiit, and usually goes to him for advice and guidance. She rarely gets in trouble with him, since she is one who obeys the rules. In fact, she rarely ever communicates with him, except maybe to help with schoolwork. When she was small, she would crawl into Pocky's lap and go to sleep, no matter what he was doing. She remembers a time when she was equally enthusiastic and loving with him as with Khajiit, but as she grew up, Marian realized that Pocky isn't exactly the most endearing father one can have. To be honest, she feels that things are a bit awkward when they're alone with each other.

With Khajiit, however, things are different. Marian is able to let loose and have fun, laughing at his stories and just talking with him. Unlike her brother, she frowns upon Khajiit's thieving past, and tries her best to make sure he doesn't do anything of the sort again. As a person who follows rules, she also follows her own strict set of moral codes, and tries to enforce them upon her own father. Though Marian depended on Pocky for a sort of 'safe haven' when she was young, she got rid of the habit quickly. Though she feels much safer in Pocky's lap, sitting against Khajiit's shoulders would have to make do for many years of her childhood.

When she was small, Marian was rather detached towards Zaira. 'Too girly,' she would mutter to herself, 'keeps on trying to give me stupid flower crowns and crafts; as if I need that sort of stuff.'
As she grew up, however, she realized that the other kiamara was just trying to be nice. She gradually started to open up to Zaira, and after accidentally ruining one of her decorations once, she vowed to never play a prank on Zaira ever again. The result was too disastrous to enjoy.

Marian shares a sort of understanding with Anders. He knows what she's seen in her trips overseas, and is probably the only one to know why the experience affected the usually strong willed girl so much. During her days locked in her room, he sent many cheerily decorated cupcakes and other sweets.

---
Chains clasp around a man's hands,
Though he has done nothing wrong.
A rope is tied around his neck,
Though he is innocent.
The laws of this world;
Are they really biased?
Or is it because I do not have the ability to save someone?
Tears won't make a difference,
Because what's done is done.
But for the first time,
I'm weeping.
Not just for my inability to help,
But also for someone else.
For those who have lost their homes,
For those who have lost their lives,
All to the cruel laws governing this world.
And yet,
I stick to these laws,
Because they rule over me,
And I have no power to change them.
