I am Yūyake, child of the sunset.
When I saw this babe, I immediately thought of the sunset.
Her golden feathers with the single spot of light gold in the
center reminded me of fading sunlight, and when I found the
Japanese word for sunset it fit her perfectly. Thus, Yūyake
was born.

Yūyake certainly isn't a girly girl by any means, but that
doesn't mean she likes being called a boy. She thinks it's weird
when others call her a boy, and it bothers her, but she won't
change the way she acts no matter what.

I'm almost six years old, but that doesn't make me stupid.
In truth, Yūyake is actually quite smart for her age. She is very
active in conversations with her brother, but her stutter can
prevent her from talking actively with others despite her
friendly, childish nature.

Ebi's my bestest friend, and big brother!
Ebi and Yu are like two peas in a pod.
She loves to spend time with him, and
they get into trouble together a lot of
the time. But she doesn't mind, because
she really, really loves Ebi.

I speak english and japanese at home, but
I wanna learn 'talian too.
Yu looks up to Ebi and wants to be just like
him when she gets older. She's trying to
get him to teach her Italian, since he's
learning it from his pen pal.

weaknesses
Well, I can't really see color, and I kinda talk
funny around everyone but Ebi.
Yu is colorblind and sees the world only in
shades of gray. She was born this way, and
has known nothing else. Only when her parents
started to teach her colors did they realize,
because she couldn't tell them apart. Her
stutter, or 'funny talk' only happens when she
meets new people, because she doesn't know
what they'll think of her.

fears
I don't like thunder and lightnin' or school.
Yu, like every child, hates the loud sounds of
thunder and bright lights of lightning. School,
however, is because she is scared of what the
others will think of her. Since she can't see
colors, she's nervous about being asked to
identify them, which only makes her stutter
worse.

collections
I like the pretty picture cards and pandas!
Yu collects postcards she finds in stores and
gets from her family in other countries. She
always gives the stamps from the ones sent to
her to Ebi for his collection and keeps the
postcard for herself.

Her panda collection is far bigger, though.
Every inch of her room is panda-themed, and
she can never seem to get enough of the huge,
lovable creatures.

Have you ever tried to describe the colors to someone? To tell them what yellow is? Red? Blue? Well try being on the receiving side of those... interesting descriptions. That's me. Yūyake, the colorblind sunset.

red
the most passionate, wonderfully warm color,
like blood and roses, love and fury, its just
powerful, and smooth, and impossible to ignore.

"Ebi, can you tell me the colors of the sunset?" Yūyake asks one evening,
sitting with her brother outside in the base's courtyard and watching the
reddening sun dip below the horizon.

☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼☼

Ebi smiles and nods, turning to look at the sunset. "There're so many colors,
Kay. At the center of it all is yellow, the best color of them all. There's some
orange too, but only a little bit, and there's soft sort of rosy red.

"After that is a light-ish, dark-ish purple that turns into a brilliant dark blue.
If you could see it, you'd say the colors swirled together."

it's like an anxious color, because it's so bright
it seems to shout at you: Don't look at me! which
of course, you do because it draws the eye. It’s a
warm color, like the moment before you faint in
a hot classroom. it’s beautiful in small amounts,
but it’ll kill you with boredom if you get too much
in a piece of art.

its delicious like a lemon, sour and sweet, like a
nice little migraine because its so bright and
happy.

She smiles, closing her eyes and picturing the colors. She can't see them, no,
but she can taste them, feel them and smell them.

The sweet sourness of the yellow sun, with slight anxiety as it passes through
to nighttime. She's familiar with this scene, these feelings, but the way Ebi
tells it makes it sound so magical every time. "Thank you, big brother."

That night, Yūyake ponders the world of color. It's odd, but since Ebi told her
what the colors are like in terms of taste, she can hear them too. Like Ebi.
He's her favorite color; a soft, kind green that refuses to be what everyone
thinks he should be. She's going to miss him when he moves out... but it'll
all be okay. She'll still get to see him, and he'll still be her favorite color.

it’s full of life and a little on the defiant side like:
Come at me bro, I dare you. like purple, its not
really a cool or a hot color to me. it’s just so full of
life and energy.

is very soothing, and wet, and soft. its what
people say, calm and cool.

And the next morning, she imagines the colors of the sunrise. Only instead of
sweet-sour sun fading, it is rising once more to welcome the day. Her smile
that day is as bright as that lemon-y sun, despite the drab grays of her world.

Even though Yu can't see the colors, her world is still full of them. In every
little thing she hears, smells and tastes she finds color. Some she adores, and
others she despises, but they are all there. Her drab world of gray still has
enough light to make it worth everything.

it’s like a hug, and it smells like flowers, or that
nice feeling first thing in the morning when
you’ve had a good dream. its comforting, neither
hot nor cold, but somewhere thats the perfect in
between. darker purples are wonderfully bold,
of course, especially true purple.
